In the darkness, the soothing sound of waves crashing upon the shore brought Elissa back to conciousness. Groaning, she rolled from her stomach onto her side, her sight blurry for a moment before clearing. Watching the sea, she could only think she was dreaming until a plank of wood hit her foot. Her attention drifted from it to the large jagged rock on the edge of the beach, and the boat that had been speared by it. It took a moment for her to put two and two together, her sense of detachment due to her situation made it difficult for her to think clearly.
Soon she realized what had happened, and the memories came flooding back. A princess of the kingdom of Yew, she was traveling by ship with her servants; a small attachment of guards and her handmaidens. They were to be going to a distant land where her new husband awaited her. She was to become his wife, and become Queen of his kingdom. That night, on the boat, a storm grew overhead, and it seemed to overshadow everything. She remembered feeling a deep sense of forboding. It seemed her intuition had been right.
Pushing herself to her feet, she saw no one else in sight. It seemed there were no survivors, and Elissa was on her own. What would she do? How would she survive? She had never been taught what to do if such a situation as this occured. A Princess like herself was supposed to have some guard or servant do everything for her! But it appeared that such a thing would be unlikely now. If there was nothing edible here, then she would die a slow, hungry, death.
Turning to walk away from the destroyed boat, she saw the tip of a sail, traveling behind a large hill as it rounded about the island. Oh, thank the gods, she was saved! Rushing towards this boat and waving her hands, she yelled at the top of her lungs, "HELP! HELP! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP-"
The voice died in her throat as the boat came fully into view. It's sail held the symbol of a skull and crossbones. That was something she had learned about as a young girl. It meant that it was a pirate ship! From what she could see, it was obvious they saw her, and considering the extravagant, but rather torn, dress she wore, there wasn't a doubt in their mind what class she came from.
What was better? Living on this island in fear of pirates? Or should she go with them? If she did, chances were she would either die, or be used constantly as their own play toy. However, on board that ship, she might be fed, maybe even taken care of. Perhaps if she told them who she was, and gave them proof of her royalty, they would keep her alive so that her father, the King, might pay them a ransom!
She made her decision, however terrible the consequences might be, and waited on the shore.
