The perfect Xmas song...

I love so many!

Mistletoe and wine, Rockin' around the Christmas tree, O little town of bethlehem, Hark the herald, grandma got run over by a reindeer *grins*....it changes from year to year, but generally I love Christmas music :) I sing along with it in the shops :nana:

You are just a love Santa, EL. Merry, merry and all good to you.

Surely it has to be Nat King Cole's rendition of The Christmas Song?

Karen Carpenter's Merry Little Christmas cover always chokes me up (as does Judy's original).

And of course good old Jingle Bells, althogh I don't have any version in mind. (Any one that isn't children trying to sound cute. If they're sounding beautiful, like a good boys choir say, that's OK. But not cute.)

Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas music is very beautiful.

Alvin and Chipmunks Christmastime. :D

Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming - by brass choir

Ukranian Bell Carol - by full vocal chorus or by handbell choir

Leroy Anderson's Sleigh Ride - by full orchestra

Silent Night - in church with the congregation and lighted candles

Oh yes, Roxy - Christmas Time is Here - from Charlie Brown Christmas

and O Holy Night - done by me

Silent Night; Holy Night

Stille Nacht; Heilige Nacht sung by a choir a capella in German.

My father and his brothers used to sing it every Christmas and dedicate it to the memory of their Austrian friends from before World War II who had taught it to them. Most of those friends suffered once Germany annexed Austria because they were/had been active against the Nazi Party.

My relations sang it as a reminder of a lost innocence that would never return.

Og

Shiver.

There's a scene in Enemy At The Gates (the book) where a Russian soldier was listening to the Germans sing that at Stalingrad.

I'm not sure I could listen to that without blubbering like a baby.

Mannheim Steamroller's Christmas music.

All five CD's and the concert video.

Totally awesome.

Judy Garland singing 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas'. (from the movie 'Meet Me in St. Louis')

The Carpenters Christmas Album (on CD).

Motown Christmas Album (on CD).

Bing Crosby singing 'White Christmas' (from the movie 'Holiday Inn').

Merry Christmas, everyone.

Peace.

Cheesey as it may sound ... Brenda Lee belting out "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" always makes my head start bopping and singing (badly) along.

Any Christmas song sung by Burl Ives makes me shudder ... and not in a good way. I worked and entire Christmas season where the only tape we had to play was a Burl Ives Christmas Collection.

I will not do anything to make this thread political, but I can't resist saying that there are other important reasons that one might greatly dislike Burl Ives.

BTW, Merry Christmas, Rogue, and the happiest of new years to you also. :rose:

Gonna have to google him now. :)

Merry Christmas to you as well, Ms Appleby.

The most interesting song to hear while shopping for one grapefruit, one fresh pear, one quarter-pound of pasta, a tomato, dog biscuits and postage stamps is Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, performed by Judy Garland. If you're uncertain of your mood as Christmas approaches, it's guaranteed to help you decide. And it's so hummable!

As of this afternoon, it has unexpected competition: Harry Nilsson's cover of Can't Live, lyrics co-written by Pete Ham, who hanged himself at the age of 27.

No I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving,
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes it shows

No I can't forget tomorrorow
When I think of all my sorrows,
When I had you there but then I let you go
And now it's only fair that I should let you know
What you should know...

Can't live,
etcetera.

Incidentally, there's no evidence to support my theory that Ham's suicide was influenced by one too many hearings of Burl Ives' Holly Jolly Christmas.

It just stands to reason.

I love to listen to all the classics while I'm decorating and whatnot, but my favorite song about Christmas is 'Same Old Lang Syne' by Dan Fogelberg. It gets me sniffling about like watching 'It's A Wonderful Life'.

[like totally OT]

Hmmm, so Ol' Sam The Snowman played ball with HUAC, huh.

I thought it was just his music that was irritating.

Thanks for the infotip, Roxy.

And a Merry Christmas to you too.

[We now return you to your regularly scheduled Holiday Music thread]

Who needs other reasons when there's Holly Jolly Christmas?

I have my own personal tradition.
Three songs I must hear on Christmas eve.

"Baby Please Come Home" the Rhonettes version

"War is over" the Etheridge version

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" the Pretenders.

Well, ya did it, I had to wiki the guy after that hint. And apart from that rather ugly blot on his escutcheon, he was still to my mind, a "Santa Claus Folk Singin' Dude", as Bill & Ted might have put it.

The powerful rendition of the Cannon Of The Bells by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, whom I shall be watching this coming weekend.

And aside from that, a hauntingly appropriate rendition of 'Silent Night' as sung by ghostly children in a choir, their voices echoing off the frescoes of Jesus and the various saints . . . sends a chill down my spine every time and makes me think of nothing but God for a while . . . .
