I once lived a stormy existence. During the time I used to look out at the desert how different it was barren but beautiful. It was only empty to the untrained eye. If you waited and looked for a long time you could see movement and colors and rare and exotic thoughts would come and you could ponder them for a long time.

There were things that would happen there, not very often, that when you looked at them it would lead to an understanding of the people in the world that you might love that could last for a long long time. You remind me of such events. In the desert large thunderstorms would come over from the California beaches. You could see them coming from a long way away lightning and darkness filling the sky in what was an intense sunshiny day. They would stretch across the desert sky and cover the mountains in the distance they would actually cover everything. you could see it coming sometimes fast sometimes slow and sometimes they would turn away and you could just see the storm happening to someone else. But most of the time they would keep coming at you and would consume everything. The storm I am thinking about was very large and it blacked out the sky in every direction. It was so dark that the desert sun was not able to shine through at all and it was a powerful sun that day. The rain drenched everything it cleaned all the debris away in one huge push of nature.
You could absorb some of the power and some say that they made love through these kinds of storms and it gave them incredible sexual power. But I just watched the storm.
These storms caused flash floods interesting that in the dryess parts of the country water like this would not be absorbed by the earths thirsty soul. But the earth over many years had developed what was called calechi a rock hard surface underneath the skin of the desert that would not let any of the cleansing water in. It developed they say because if the water came in once that the desert could not continue to live because the desert would be thirsty for the storms all the time and the storms only came on wonderful unpredictable occassions and to some parts of the desert never at all.
So the desert would just let the water in a little just enough to take the surface level garbage away and to remember what the water felt like and then let the rest of it flow downstream back to the farms and beaches and suburban areas of California.

The desert would bloom after these sudden violent events. cactus would grow flowers that would last a short period of time and people would wake up to birds singing in the morning. There are trees that grow in the desert that love these storms and they use the water to crack holes in the calechi and there roots reach down into the desert and because they reach down so far they are able to stay alive when other plants die and they provide homes and sustenance for the creatures that like to live in adverse but beautiful circumstances.

Most of my life and in almost everything I do I feel like the storm. I like being the storm but with you I have that very rare and unique feeling of being the desert and I feel your roots probing into me and I feel like the bird in your branches.

When I wrote this I sent it to my new special friend and she has still not fully recovered.
