The penalty for treason under the U.S. code is death

Former Massachusetts Governor and Republican presidential challenger Bill Weld said Monday that President Donald Trump’s “acts of treason” in pressuring Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden deserved the death penalty.

“That is treason. It’s treason pure and simple, and the penalty for treason under the U.S. code is death,” Weld told MSNBC’s Morning Joe. “That’s the only penalty.”

“Obviously, canceling primaries undermines democratic institutions and democratic elections, but that’s far from the deepest dive crime that the president has committed here,” Weld said, referring to the growing calls for clarification about Trump’s actions toward Ukraine and the withholding of military funds in the weeks before a July 25 call in which he admitted to discussing an investigation of Hunter Biden.

“He has now acknowledged that in a single phone call right after he suspended $250 million of military aid to Ukraine, he called up the president of Ukraine and pressed him eight times to investigate Joe Biden, who the president thinks is going to be running against him,” Weld said. “Talk about pressuring a foreign country to interfere with and control a U.S. election.”

“The penalty on the Constitution is removal from office,” Weld said. “And that might look like a pretty good alternative to the president if he can work out a plea deal.”

Bill Well seems to be taking his candidacy and his challenge to the GOP's Pinocchio President very seriously.

About time someone did.

Death is not the only penalty and there was no treason no matter what was said.
Everybody starts crying "treason" every chance they get and it's dumb. It won't happen, ever. Put the energy towards something that might actually happen.

It doesn't sound like treason to refuse to give somebody a pile of money.

ETA: Telling a head of state to investigate a political opponent might be illegal, but this was Joe Biden's son who was to be investigated.https://www.cnbc.com/2019/09/20/trump-urged-ukraine-president-to-investigate-joe-bidens-son.html

was it treason when Biden

Withheld 1 billion

Let's see - According to his bio:
Weld is a Harvard and Oxford graduate, Weld began his career as legal counsel to the United States House Committee on the Judiciary before becoming the United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts and later, the United States Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division. He worked on a series of high-profile public corruption cases and later resigned in protest of an ethics scandal and associated investigations into Attorney General Edwin Meese.

I believe I will choose to listen to Weld's assessment of the situation given those credentials.

Well, yes, Trump has been committing treason right out there in the open. If Obama had done anything like this, our resident Trumpettes would be apoplectic and hopping up and down in their indignation.

THIS IS GOING SWIMMINGLY: Biden 2018: You’re damn right I ordered the US-aid-money Code Red on Ukraine prosecutor going after son’s company.

Will Bill Weld call for Biden’s execution?

Why Is It That The People Who Advertise Themselves As A Saner Alternative To Trump Always Seem To Turn Out To Be Batshit Crazy?

I'd accept President Weld over President Pinocchio.

For sure President Pinocchio wouldn't be getting a pardon!

Presumably, you are referring to Trump. Pinocchio, not being a natural born citizen, would not be eligible to be POTUS.

Trump has no need for a pardon. He has never been convicted of anything, nor has he been indicted for anything. He did have some underhanded business dealings, but that was before he was elected and had nothing to do with his presidency.

How very presumptuous of me.

Provided President Pinocchio does not get reelected, and since under Department of Justice policy, the president could be prosecuted for obstruction of justice crimes after he leaves office, he would be in need of a pardon.

Which I expect (and presume) Bill Weld would not grant.

First, I expect the Donald to be reelected, but nothing is certain. Second, he has never committed obstruction of justice, although some shysters would say otherwise. Third, Bill Weld has about as much chance of being elected POTUS as I do.

Like Watergate had nothing to do with Nixon's presidency. If Ford hadn't needlessly pardoned Nixon, he would have probably gone on to win the '76 election. Well, maybe not, because the voters had a pretty good idea of what the republicans had done and decided it was time for a little house cleaning.

May well be deja vu all over again.

It's worse now. Key Republicans worked for Nixon's ouster. Key Republicans now are protecting the corrupt/criminal/Russian asset.

They protected Nixon too, initially. If it becomes politically untenable to continue to do so, they'll be jumping off Trump like fleas off a dead dog.

During his first term in office, Nixon had decent approval ratings. https://news.gallup.com/poll/116677...ings-Gallup-Historical-Statistics-Trends.aspx

He won reelection easily in 1972, but that was mostly because the Dems nominated a walking disaster. I always thought of the Watergate break-in as being ordinary dirty politics, but it was the attempted coverup that shot down Nixon.

when Weld said this he was hailed a HERO

when Trump says this....................he is EVIL
