Today is St, Matts Day, the patron of our little parish. As the gospel was being read I was struck by Mathew’s response to Jesus’ call. He invited Christ to a dinner party with other members of his profession. The problem was that Mathew and his friends were notorious, unrepentant sinners, tax collectors. The Pharisees (lawyers) really had a problem with this famous teacher consorting with these people, to which Jesus basically said, “Get a life.” He is then tagged by these lawyers as: “The friend of sinners.”
That is not all. This is the God who turned water into wine (and very good wine) so that a party could continue. He chastised Martha when she complained that Mary was out there having fun at the party, instead of helping her do stuff in the kitchen. He not only made a friend of the Samaritan Slut, he offered her “living water”.
