Is it enough to have not mentioned an age or that it's set in high school? (There's nothing in the text that points to under 18.)

Or do I need to at least explicitly suggest (nice combo) college?

Sincerely,
ElSol

IMHO
you should put some reference to being 18 if you will say highschool. *here, kids are graduating at 17*
ive seen some great stories be rejected because the '18' point wasnt clear.

Hmm... it doesn't say 'high school' and it's set in a post-apocalyptic world.

I think I'll make the one teacher be a Professor instead of a "Miss".

Ah... fuck it! I'll just maintain another 'literotica' version of a story and convert this one to explicitly say college.

Sincerely,
ElSol

MLyons' story (Goodbye La La Land -- a very good one, IMO) is set in high school, and I don't think it mentions age.

I believe Lit will assume a high-school senior is 18 and that anyone not a senior is not 18 unless otherwise stated.

I have a story that has the folk in highschool, but the main character has sex after his 18th birthday party.

Like you elsol I wanted to make sure there was no confusion.

In general, if you feel there is a possibility of confusion, implicityly staeting age is a good idea. If you just don't want to do that, you can provide an inference that allows the reader to know the character is of age. You can get by, by simpoly not mentioning anything about age, as long as the most obvious assumption is that the character is of age.

I think the best course is to simply say it up front, early in the story, and not worry about it.

He/She just happened to be celebrating his/her eighteenth birthday...

If you don't mention explicitly or implicitly their age, at least make sure that they are mentally 18. I've read far too many stories here where the characters are "high school seniors" or "just had thir 18th birthday" and in fact act and react like they are...i dunno...twelve?

Haven't been around many 18 year olds lately, have you, Liar? :)

This is probably the single biggest thing I don't like about this site: the selective censorship. (Yeah, I know all the excuses.)

I saw a story the other day that dealt with this cleverly: they just slapped a disclaimer at the top that said something like, "all characters in here are over 18".

Personally, I would never change a story or rewrite it to fit anyone's censorship. That's stupid, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. .... Either don't write it in the first place or post it somewhere else. (I favor the latter).

If for some weird reason you wish to post it here, I say, put a bizarre disclaimer at the top like: "in the not too distant future, a strange virus has extended the maturation process so that kids don't go through puberty until they're 32..." and try and post whatever you want.

But better to post in a more freedom oriented place and support that site's efforts at making the world a better place.

It is very tempting at times to write what you want and have characters under the age of 18 have sex. However, the brief moment of freedom is pointless and very dangerous to the rest of the Literotica community.

There are a lot of people who would like to shut down Literotica and similar sites. What they are looking for is an excuse. Under 18 sex is an excuse. Why give them an excuse?

Even if you are willing to give them an excuse, what of the rest of the Literotica community? I like being able to publish in Literotica. People who want to publish under-age sex stories threaten my freedom of speech. Yes, I would like complete freedom of speech, but the courts will not allow it. In the meantime, I try to be responsible and perhaps push the boundaries a little further if I can find a way to safely do so.

JMHO.

I thought it was, "omg!!1 lolz"... :D

I like rules, but I don't write within the Literotica's set of limitations.

This means when a story can viably be put on Literotica, I need to know the least amount of editing I can get away with.

Having to put in an explicit 'hey, I have signed contracts by all actors and they're eighteen' sometimes requires dismantling a story and building it around a different frame.

By require, I mean shit that don't make sense will drive me up the fucking wall, and I'll have to kill someone to stop the voices.

Eighteen year old freshmen in high school? *shivers*

Sincerely,
ElSol

That's the problem. Who really can write sex between the lobotomy-challenged, hormone-driven, inarticulate guys we all were at 18! IMHO, Chicago Bob did the most fantastic story about first-time and she was well in her twenties!

Look for class!

Excuse me! I happen to consider groping to be the height of clear communication about what I wanted.

It wasn't very literate but it was certainly expressive.

Very true at a school I used to coach at -- a neighborhood with lots of immigrants and "disadvantaged" blahblahblah .... our track team won the state competition each year with 16-19 yo freshmen. Had a 23 y o senior one year.

That may give you another angle, though don't know what your story is about or where.

I agree with the train of thought that says not to revise for it. Why? That would be a different story. Because a 14 y o just doesn't act/think like a 18 y o ... not that either age does very much or very well at thinking.

That why I said 'dismantling a story', a high school setting and a dorm setting are different enough to make for rebuilding a story from the ground up.

It can be an interesting writing exercise though, and I especially like to throw in those special DVD features like alternate endings.

Move to Dear Old Blighty.
Highschool is for 11 to 17 year olds.
A senior would be 16 or 17, so if you don't mention their age....

And if Literotica was based in the UK, sex between consenting people is legal at 16.

But Literotica is US based and faces virulent opposition. We stick within the rules to protect Literotica and ourselves from the fanatics who would willingly destroy any site that is at all sexual.

Bending Literotica's rules could risk this whole community. Please don't.

Apologies Ogg.
I was just wondering how it worked, not being serious.
Different countries, different cultures and how Lit views them.
Do stories have to conform to US rules?

You could write a scene where they have sex after going to vote...or maybe in a voting booth...

Kind of difficult in our voting station at the local school.
Open, single booths, people watching.
I'll give it a try next week.
