Beep Beep Beep
Jack’s eyes shot open at the sound of his alarm clock. He felt himself start to fall and the wood slats holding up his box spring broke, dropping Jack’s bed through the bed frame and onto the floor. He blinked a few times. Jack blinked a few times and sat upright in his bed. He surveyed the damage, rubbed his eyes and surveyed it again.
“Third time this week.” Jack sighed. “Why is it I can only fly when I‘m asleep?”
“Jack honey are you alright?” his mom called from downstairs.
“Yeah Mom, I’m fine,” he yelled back.
“I heard a crash Jack, what’s going on up there?”
Jack blinked, looking around his room, trying to think of something. He kicked his blankets off and swung his legs over the side of his bed, standing up in his altogether, an impressive sight. Jack’s body was perfect, a veritable Adonis, he could have been sculpted from a rock by Michelangelo. Jack walked to the door and opened it slightly so he could shout to his mother in a lower voice.
“I tripped and fell on the bed Ma, I think I broke through the wooden slats again.”
Jack could hear his mother sigh. “Well you heard your father the last time this happened. You’re going to have to start paying for this damage you’re doing with your after school job.”
“Mom, that money is for college!” Jack protested.
“You can talk about that with your father tonight when he gets home from work. Until then try not to destroy anything else, ok?”
“Yes Ma,” Jack’s voice filled with resignation. He closed the door and moved over to his bureau, taking out a pair of boxers with smiley faces and put them on followed by a pair of black sox. Then he moved to the closet and put on a plain white dress shirt and grey slacks, topping off the ensemble with a black tie. He checked himself in the mirror leaning against the wall his father had scavenged from a broken projection TV from behind Best Buy. No doubt about it, Jack looked like a total dork. Just like every other kid who went to St. Francis Academy.
He made his way downstairs and poured himself a bowl of Trix and a glass of milk. The Bat signal was on the front page and it looked like the two cover stories were about something the Batman had done in Gotham, something about catching the Riddler, and the other big story was on how Superman had saved Metropolis from something or other. They lived pretty close to Gotham, outside Bludhaven, so Gotham news generally got more press. Jack broke the paper open to the comics page and started reading about the latest adventures of BC and Charlie Brown. He finished the comics too soon and started reading ‘Dear Abby.’ He finished that too fast and moved on to the arts & entertainment section. Anything but the real news.
Jack finished up his bowl and brought it to the sink, chugging the milk as he walked. He filled the dishes with water and turned around to see his sister walking down the stairs. She was a year and a half older, but had stayed back in fifth grade putting her in the same grade as Jack. She was wearing a robe and a damp towel was wrapped around her hair. Jack was tempted to say something, but he didn’t want a fight.
“Newspaper’s on the table,” Jack said as he walked past her, “I assume the bathroom’s open?” She yawned and nodded and Jack dashed upstairs before she could admonish him to be quick because she still needed to put on her face.
Jack brushed his teeth, washed his face and then examined his face in the mirror. “Man, 18 years old and I still don’t need to shave. I’ll never grow a beard.” He ran a hand through his hair. One hair refused to lie down. He reached his hand up, caught the cowlick between his thumbnail and forefinger and squeezed, cutting the hair in two. He sighed and tossed the offending hair into the trash can by the sink. He used the toilet, flushed, washed his hands and walked out, leaving the door ajar.
He walked downstairs and nodded to his sister who was eating her own bowl of Trix. “Bathroom’s open.” He walked over to the couch in the living room and turned the TV on. There was some live report about Green Lantern and the Flash stopping a villain in New York. Jack quickly turned the channel to Boomerang and watched a few Bugs Bunny cartoons while he waited for his sister to get ready so she could drive them both to their third day as seniors at St. Francis Academy.

You’ve all met Kal-El, aka Clark Kent, aka the last son of Krypton. Well this is Jack, aka Zor-Em, the other last son of Krypton. His father, a geneticist, read Jor-El’s work on the ‘green plague’ that was destroying Krypton and he believed Jor-El was right. Fashioning his own rocket he sent his son to Earth as well. This rocket wasn’t as fast as Kal-El’s and it took Zor-Em an additional 10-15 years to reach Earth. Zor-Em was found by a boy scout troop and brought to the local orphanage.
Zor-Em was adopted by a loving family who had already adopted a baby girl. He was renamed Jack and grew up fairly normal. His powers started to show when he was 15, just super strength and invulnerability at first. Now he’s starting to hover in his sleep. His Father and mother know about the super strength but they’ve kept the secret from his sister. Super powered humans are well known in this world, but his parents don’t want Jack to suffer through all the extra problems he’d have if the world knew of his abilities. So they decided to keep it secret.
His Father is a welder for a gas pipe company. He works insane hours but makes decent money. His mother is a medical transcriber and works out of the home so she could raise the kids. The live in the suburbs between Bludhaven and Gotham. For those who don’t know, Gotham is the city Batman’s in and Bludhaven is the city Nightwing is in. Jack’s dad does most of the repairs around the house and Jack generally helps him.
Jack’s mother and Father are not Jonathon and Martha Kent. They haven’t given Jack a value system similar to Superman’s. He’s grown up watching TV and trying to fit in and be cool like the other kids. While he’s not outright evil, if he can get away with something, he’d be far more tempted to try it then Clark would. When he gets X-Ray vision he’ll probably become a voyeur for a few weeks.
The siblings ‘share’ a beat-up ‘57 Chevy convertible. By share I mean the sister has a license and Jack does all the maintenance and repairs. Because it costs significantly more to insure a boy then a girl Jack won’t get his license until after New Years. There could be a story here about the sister taking off on him one day after Jack’s speed kicks in and Jack beats her home.
The idea behind the thread is similar to Smallville. Growing up in a suburb with super powers. Maybe stopping a few crimes, criminals and monsters. Some kids in the school may develop powers of their own. There should be some kryptonite up in the hills near Jack’s landing site and that could have accidentally given a few kids powers. There’s also meta-humans, people who develop powers on their own, similar to mutants like the X-Men.
The sister role is open, as is other kids at school. Jack’s gotta have a few friends and enemies in the social order around school. He’s never gone out for sports before, not wanting to accidentally hurt the other kids. And there should be some hot girls lurking around, as there always seems to be in High School.
