Comment from Anon, just received:

“Helped me enjoy remembering sex on the beach at an international choral event 50 years ago thus week.”

(best read in a Kiwi accent, I think)

I thought it might be worth a little thread celebrating the memories stirred up by our stories…?

I have one older, semi-regular commenter who never seems to have done exactly what happened in my tales, always has an experience or two that rhyme with what happened in his life. I occasionally toy with writing a series based on tales from his comments.

A great one was from a long time ago, 2012 I think.

Most of my stories take place in RI. One reason is its easy to come up with names and locations because I live here, the other is, who the hell ever talks about RI so I'll give it a most likely unwanted shout out.

In the story I mention a beach 'Mackerel Cove" I went all the time as a kid and for a long time hosted the Penguin Plunge event which I've done just about every year. I received feedback from someone saying they got a thrill out of seeing it mentioned, and they grew up near there and went every weekend for years before moving to Connecticut for a few years and recently coming back to RI. We went back and forth a few times and became friendly to the point her and her husband met up with my wife and I for dinner, and we're all still friends to this day.

Nice! Although I only guessed what RI stood for after you spelt out Connecticut :)

Here's another one - this comment was from @iwatchus. The story mentions 'Firth of Fifth' from Genesis 1973 "Selling England By The Pound' album, and he commented:

"..hearing that her father was born when the Fifth of Fifth was released made me feel old -- I remember going to that concert."

He saw Peter Gabriel era Genesis - I would totally take that over sandy sex on the beach!

I get these sorts of fond memory comments frequently, largely about the geographic setting of a scene, the year, make, and model of a car featured in the story, some business familiar to a reader, etc.

What few sex scenes I write aren't that memorable, except for those in the I/T category apparently:

"Been there, done that - with sis! ...and She was the one to initiate our times together in the first place. She had been Trying for years to get my eyes open to her intents/objective. We already had a special bond ...to a large degree Because - although we were full-blood brother/sister we did Not 'meet' for the first until we were 16 and 17 (I was 13 months older). She was adopted out from the family when she was 2 months old ..a long story. We had suddenly had a bond from day one like few have. We were in our early 20's when we crossed the line to the next stage. Was special."

I got a lot of that on Queen of the Roller Derby. Much of it takes place in the 1950s in Detroit, and I picked my in-laws brains for local landmarks and customs of that era. I received a number of comments from people who grew up in the area or remembered a particular place or business. Also, some wanted to share their memories of going to the derby.

Interesting topic, thanks. The 'memories' part seems to break down into two categories for me (and yes, always sweet to get one of these in the comments):

Setting or activity.

I am a big believer in descriptive settings, so am pleased when someone says:

I grew up in the Berkshires. I loved your story and how perfectly captured the old new England house and weather. (Bombshell in the Berkshires)

Very realistic conference, from the late printers to the excitement of the agenda and That Guy who always asks questions. (California Conference Connections) thank you @Kumquatqueen

Activity:

Reminds me of my girlfriend (who later became my wife) exploring, fondling, and finally stroking my penis to the point of ejaculation. Brings back great memories. Thanks for posting. (Stroke of Fortune) thank you @Privates1stClass

reminds me of my high school days in the 1960's
(First Lick) thank you @swfb70

I got a grumpy comment from a reader once against my story 'Banging Cousin Becky In Blackpool', which is set in 1955 with various flashbacks to the Second World War.

I did the best I could given I'm not from the UK and the story takes place many years before I was born, but this guy said he was there at the time, that the story was full of historical inaccuracies and anachronisms, and that as a result it was terrible. It would have been better if he had said exactly what I had messed up on, but no, he had to be a mean old grouch and just entirely negative. That's even if he was being truthful about his age - this would have put him in his 80s at least - for all I know he could have been an 18-year-old college student from America who has never been to the UK who was trolling.

Wheelchair Bound? produced a number of sweet tales from commenters, including from those who had had wheelchair-using partners who had since died. So far, none from anyone recognising the Prof or 'Master Keith'.

One reader complained the science in I Say Ass, You Say Arse was 'rather 1990s', but it was in fact perfectly accurate for certain researchers in 2007 when the story was set (made a nice change from the commenters expecting my characters to just drop their science and fuck. Some readers appreciate my take on filthy realism...)

Some people can't cope with other people having had different experiences to their own, or plain don't believe them. Look at any Reddit or Quora thread on "What was it like as an X, in Y time period?"
