It is just a matter of coming to terms with yourself and not becoming a drone in the crowd. To not be afraid and express yourself openly. Ditto, MzC. Seeing/reading REAL or TRUE used to describe dom/mes or subs, squicks me.
I do think I understand why some use these qualifiers (real and true), however. It seems to have begun in chat where so many pretenders, posers, and those looking for jo material come out in droves. They pretend to be *into* bdsm just to have some fun online (cyber is like interactive porn, in my opinion). Once the computer is off they go back to their *average, normal* lives and do not give bdsm a thought. So, those who really were *into* bdsm (lived it to some degree), were trying to find a way to distinguish between *them* and *us*.
I prefer to use "natural" or "sexual" to distinguish between the two types of D/S, and the posers (pretenders) are, at least, forced to distinguish between those two (if they want to play the chat game, anyway). The room I chat in is as close to *real* as you can get online (in my opinion), while still enjoying the illusion of a power exchange.
