A new century, a time of new and fabulous inventions, a time of allie and foes, a time of coming war. Thrust into this are, our hero, Danny Dart and Elizabeth Hascombe. A pair of 18 year olds from opposite ends of society's scale. Danny, a common seaman, born of potato famers in Ireland and Elizabeth, an English lady, born of statesmen and Earls, are thrust together by the fates and a little help from Mother Nature. Read how they argue, become victims of a freak storm, persevere and finally accept each other and become one.

Now our story takes us to the South Pacific, aboard the Steam powered freighter "Florence Wright". A few days from her destination in Sidney, Austrailia. Elizabeth is on her way to join her father, British Ambassador to Australia. Danny is, more and more, just trying to stay out of Elizabeth's way and still perform his duties. It's been a long voyage and tempers are running high...

Danny Dart

Danny languished over the most recent 'punishment' he had been given by the First Officer. He was swabbing the deck during his off time, when he was usually asleep. It's all because of that royal pain Elizabeth. She had been 'knocked down on purpose' by me, according to her. Actually I had been carrying several boxes, and couldn't see, when she had walked into my path. The result was some broken stuff and less time for Danny to sleep.

He looked up as he saw Elizabeth walking arm-in-arm with Ensign Foreward. He was not looking where he was going, his eyes staring straight into her deep, blue eyes. "Beg your Pardon Sir, wet deck", Danny called out.

The Ensign kept on walking, chatting with the young girl who was throwing herself and her charms at him. I've seen Bombay whores acting more subtle. Danny called out again in a louder voice, "Ensign Sir, the deck is wet and could be a danger."

Perhaps the officer couldn't hear him or, was more likely, ignoring him. Danny tried one last time. This time addressing the 'lady'. "Excuse me mum, but the deck has been recently swabbed and is still wet. A person might slip."

Danny's addressing Elizabeth finally registered with the young Ensign, but it was too late. He had already hit the offending wet deck and was losing his footing. Elizabeth instantly let go of the officer's arm, so she wouldn't be dragged down with him.Did I see her give him a little push?

The Ensign hit the deck with force. His white uniform stained and ruined. As he yelled from the deck in front of Danny, Danny looked at Elizabeth. Her innocent eyes were looking away from him and her scarlet lips were addressing the not-so-nimble Ensign with a less than impressed tone.

Danny just shook his unkept brown mane, he knew that he was 'for it' again.

Elizabeth Hascombe

It had been a pretty rough trip thus far to get to Sidney. I hadn’t really wanted to go in the first place but father dear said I had to. Since mother had been taken ill, he needed to have someone from the royal family there with him. I was the only other one so I did my civic duty. The trip would have been fine had it not been for Daniel Dart. I felt as if he was out to make my life a living hell! Everywhere I was, he was there. Was he stalking me? I sure as hell hoped not! He was not of my standard.

I decided to take a walk on the upper deck when I ran into Ensign Foreward. He seemed very nice so we struck up a conversation. The bell for tea was rung and so we started making our way to the dining hall. As we did, I could see that Daniel was there again. I leaned over to the Ensigns ear and whispered for him to ignore the young man. He did that and I could hear Daniel calling after we had passed. Then I heard him calling to me. I turned to glare at him as I listened to what the Ensign was saying. Before long I knew what Daniel was trying to do. He was trying to be civil, but I was being a stubborn bitch. I could feel the Ensign falling so I let his arm go and pushed him forward slightly. Just so he wouldn’t pull me with him or get my dress tangled in his feet.

He started to yell back to Daniel and once on his feet he went to him. He stood before him and gave him the third degree for everything. I did feel bad, but just shrugged it off and awaited the Ensign. When he returned to my side, I just slipped my arm back in his. I looked over my shoulder to Daniel and just glared at him then turned my attention back to Ensign.

Danny

Potatos, potatos, I hated peeling potatos. That stuck-up wench had me busted for sure. I not only had punishment duty, I was now relieved of my duties as Seaman and put to work in the galley. I was sure that she had fixed me up good. I almost wish I could be alone on deck with her to throw her overboard!

Danny took the pan of peeled potatos and dumped it in the big pot. This crew ate an amazing amout of potatos! Danny was only half done with the potatos for lunch. The cook kidded him about cookin' for his girlfriend. Danny told him to take a long walk on a short pier. The nerve of some guys, his girlfriend indeed!

Someone said somethin' about a coming storm and battenin' down. That used to be my job!

I sat at tea with the other ladies as we awaited dinner. I could see the men wandering the ship and it made me feel a little nervous. I shifted in my seat as I sipped my tea.

“So Ms. Hascombe, what brings you on this trip?” I heard someone ask. It brought me back to the real world at least.

“Oh…my father is in Sidney….” My voice trailed off as I saw Ensign Foreward start running. “Excuse me ladies.” I said as I excused myself from the table. I walked to where Ensign Foreward was. I could see him giving orders and looking a little flustered. “Why Mr. Foreward, if I may ask, what is going on here?”

“Well…ma’me”, he started and looked around before continuing, “not to worry anyone, but we have a storm coming. It is worse than we have ever expected. They have already had some ships lost at sea. We pondered the thought of turning around, but the storm would catch up with us no matter what. I suggest you go to your room and get your lifejacket on. I am not saying that something is going to happen, but I wouldn’t want something to happen to someone as pretty as you. Now if you would please excuse me.” He finished as he took off to help the other men.

I made my way to my room and got the jacket. It was sort of bulky, but what was I to do? I didn’t wish to die or something. I decided to stay in my cabin for dinner so called for room service. I pushed the button thinking that it would be someone from the kitchen that would come to take my order. I was surprised to open the door and find Daniel there. I didn’t know what he was doing there. The last I had heard, he was to be peeling potatoes for his little acts.

“What are you doing here Mr. Dart? You are supposed to be down below never to see daylight. At least that is what I was told.” I said as I stared at him with a hard face.

Danny

Danny looked wide-eyed at Elizabeth. He was also wearing his life jacket, but it looked better on him. A critical look came into his eyes. "What are ya doin' calling for room service in a storm? The cook only sent me up 'cause he thought something was wrong with you." Little does the cook know hahaha.

Danny started to storm out then he turned in the doorway, "Stay in here and don't ring the bell again. Understand? This is a highly trained crew member talkin'."

Danny went out and slammed the door. Crazy broad, likely to get herself killed and take the Ensign with her.

“What are ya doin’ calling for room service in a storm? The cook only sent me up ‘cuase he thought something was wrong with you.”

“Nothing is wrong with me except for now. I am starting to feel sick from seeing your ugly face! From what I was told, it was nothing to worry about and I was hungry. I wanted some food, but if you would be the one delivering it I would rather go hungry than eat something from you Daniel Dart!” I spoke sternly as I stood before him with my hands on my hips.

“Stay in here and don’t ring the bell again. Understand? This is a highly traind crew member talkin’!” He finished as he went out the door and slammed it. As I turned and started to walk away, I came to a standstill. I couldn’t move anyplace. I turned thinking that it was Daniel doing something on the other side of the door, but I found my dress shut in the door. I opened it to see Daniel still standing there. He had this smirk on his face as I pulled the dress into the room with me. All I could say was, “Hmph!” as I started to shut the door. I wasn't able to get it shut when the ship tipped and I fell out the door and into Daniels arms. I quickly rearranged myself and stood before him.

"What was that Daniel?" I asked with no emotion in my voice although the way he caught me gave me a warm chill thru my body.

Silly girl, but she was nice and soft. "That was a freak wave, lil miss. We are running into the storm, but those kind of waves sink ships. Back into your cabin now, and don't worry, Captain Strummn will get us into port, by gollie."

Danny started to help her back into her cabin, when another freak wave hit. Danny managed to grab the rail, but Elizabeth went right over. Good thing she has her vest on. Well, here goes nothing.

Danny jumped over the rail and landed next to Elizabeth. He grabbed her and tied their vests to each other, they had more of a chance together. Great, after all she has done to make my life a living hell, look who I wind up overboard with, and she'll blame me too!

Daniel started to help me back into my cabin when another wave hit. It was so hard that Daniel was pushed back to the rail. I managed to fall out of the door and pass Daniel and flip over the rail.

I saw my life flash before me as I hit the crashing water below. I was glad I had decided to put on the life jacket, but how was I to get back on the ship? The way I treated Daniel, he wouldn’t be giving up his life to save mine anytime soon! I was sure of that.

I heard people screaming as the waves crashed against the ship. I could see people scrambling so I tried calling for help. I seemed to be drifting away from the ship. Tears started to flood my eyes and I thought for sure I was going to die.

I closed my eyes, but felt the splash right next to me. I opened my eyes to find Daniel beside me. I had just drifted to the rear of the ship. He pulled me closer to him and tied me to him. I looked at him stunned!

“I do not need the help of you Mr. Dart! I am sure that Ensign Foreward will be along to rescue me. You have already caused me enough aggravation on this trip to make it not very enjoyable!”

“Listen Mum! I am the only one that knows that you went overboard here! Everyone up there is concentrating on the others that have gone over. I would like nothing more than to let you go off on your own and see how you manage, but then I would have that on my conscience. The way the storm is going, I would be surprised if the ship stays topside!” He said sternly to me. I looked at the ship as it got tossed around and we continued to drift away. I guess what he said was true. It didn’t really look all that promising seeing the ship was almost out of sight. If it were true, what was to become of us?

I treaded the cool waters with Daniel as we watched everything happen from a distance. Strangely enough I was pretty happy Daniel was with me.

I can't believe it. This girl is treating being washed overboard like a lark. Like she fell into the pool. We are still in the storm being driven away from the ship. My only hope is that her unclosing mouth causes her to take in enough water to lose consciousness.

Danny tried to steer their floating bodies as best he could. "I think there is a group of islands near where the storm is taking us. Try to keep your mouth closed and your head above water, girl."

The two castaways were battered by the wind and waves all night long. One by one they were battered into unconsciousness, drifting with the storm until it blew itself out.

Danny awoke sore like someone had been punching his entire body. He finally noticed that he was no longer adrift, instead he was lying in the shallows of some unknown beach.

Danny tried to stand on his feet, but fell back down. He tried again with the same results. It felt like someone had tied him down. He rolled over and bumped into the unconscious form of Elizabeth.

Her clothing had been mostly torn apart and she had many bruises. He could tell that by the fact that most of her nubile, young body was exposed to view. And it was a sight to look twice at. He looked down at himself and saw the bruises there. Of his clothes, there was only a torn pair of Seamen's trousers. I rest had been torn away, including his compass.

I looked at Daniel surprised by his tone. I did as he said though which was to shut my mouth and to keep my head above water. I was getting so tired. I just stopped moving as I felt the storm just drift us away. I didn’t know if I would wake up after all of this though. What a way to go!

I felt a pull against me and just moaned. I didn’t know what it was so I turned over slightly, but was unable to. I felt like someone fell on me, but I was in so much pain that I didn’t feel much. I let out a light moan as I shifted. I lie there as the warm sun fell on my body. It felt so good. I flickered my eyes and then saw Daniel looking down at me. I took in a sharp breath as I sat up and tried to cover my body from his view. What was he doing? I hoped he wasn’t getting any ideas. I looked down to find my dress pretty well torn away and saw all of the bruises on my body. This was just great! Where were we? Would anyone ever find us?

My gaze moved over to Daniel as I saw his clothing too had been pretty much torn from his body. I had to tell him thank you. Even if he had made the trip a living hell.

“Daniel. I guess that I should tell you thank you for saving me. What do we do now? I mean, we have no food, no clothing, nothing! How are we….” I wasn’t able to say anything when Daniel broke in on me. I listened as I worked on the knot to get us freed from each other.

Danny

Danny saw Elizabeth try to conceal her displayed beauty as best she could. Like that's important right now. She could distract me something fierce if she decided to walk around that way. Danny wrestled his way out of the wet life jacket, trying not to pull on Elizabeth. Meanwhile she was trying to untie the knot.

"Stay here on the beach while I look around a little." Danny saw the question in her eyes. "If you want to do something, put all the dry wood you can find in a pile, away from the water. That way we can have a fire later, maybe." Elizabeth still had more questions, but Danny was already gone.

Danny walked along the shore until it gave way to a rather steep hill. Danny climbed up to to the crest of the hill. Towards the ocean it changed into rocky cliffs that abruptly dropped into the water. Away from the shore, lush jungle spread out over the thin, but long island. The island was only about 1/4 mile wide, but at least 3 miles long.

Danny saw no sign of life, except birds and nothing out towards sea. It looked like they were marooned.

I sat there on the beach utterly speechless! Daniel was going to leave me there alone? Was he crazy? Then I heard him tell me that if I wanted to do something, I could put all of the dry wood in a pile away from the water. The nerve of him! Did he remember who I was? I had never really done any work on my own. As I tried to protest, he was already walking away.

“Daniel! Don’t you walk away from me when I am trying to talk to you! Daniel!” I screamed as I scrambled to my feet and fought with the life jacket. He never turned around just put up a hand to wave to me. How did I know he would come back? For all I knew, he would go off and never come back. With the way I have treated him he could come back, but it would be in the night and it would be so he could scare the shit out of me or kill me. Either way, I didn’t like the idea of him goin off alone.

I took off to try to catch up with him, but he was already out of sight. I took in a deep breath and blew it out as I pushed my hair back from my face. I turned around to shuffle back to where we had been washed ashore. My dress kept getting in the way so I just reached down to rip it off. I knew that if mother were to see me, she would have a fit. It was already ruined so what did it matter? It tore above the knees and I ripped the sleeves off. I felt naked, but it was all good. At least I could move better.

I did as Daniel had suggested. I started to gather up the wood. As soon as I got a sliver, I was out though. I just fell in a heap on the beach as I wondered what was to become of us. Would anyone EVER find us?

Danny

Danny looked down at the beach. Elizabeth was alright, she was apparently gathering wood as he had asked. Good, it looks like I won't be having to do everythin'. She might actually end up pullin' her weight. And its about time, too!

Danny took one last look for signs of life, then started the slow climb back down the hill to the beach. He was walking across the beach when Elizabeth ran towards him and started to berate him once he was close.

Danny said, "Shhhh", putting a finger to his lips. "Don't want to wake up the cannibals, do we." He then laughed at the worried look that came over her face. "But seriously, cannibals haven't been reported in this area for some years.

"I'm going to look in the jungle a little ways for shelter. We may have to spend this night on the beach, but we need something more secure. Please stay here, I won't be long or far. Danny started to turn away, then looked back at Elizabeth. Why didn't I notice this before. Given the state of her clothing, I would have thought she'd want more on, not less. This night will be very interesting.

Danny then walked into the jungle, disappearing from view.

Daniel started toward the jungle as he left me there alone again. After he just scared the shit out of me, he expected me to stay behind? Did he think I was crazy? I watched as he disappeared from my sight as I just sat there. He had come back from his last escapade so I did as he said. I stayed there and just sat on the beach.

I looked down to the beach and saw something floating there. What was it? I prayed it wasn’t a dead body that had been washed ashore. I started toward it slowly. I found it was a bag so I pulled it ashore with me. When I opened it and found a dress, I was so happy! It was a little larger than I was used to, but it was something that would cover me.

I looked around and didn’t see Daniel around. I pulled off my dress and slipped on the new one. It fit pretty nicely and was long. As I walked, it trailed behind me. I just flopped back down on the beach as I waited for Daniel to come back.

Danny

Yeah, I was looking for shelter, but what we really needed was water. We would die pretty quick without it, but I didn't want her to start worrying. Danny was looking through the jungle near the base of the hill. He knew that if there was a spring it would be near there.

Danny was looking down and almost walked into a big spider web. He backed up looking for the spider. There it was, a huge Banana spider. Red, yellow and black, it was 8 inches across. If it had bitten him, he might have died. Danny gave that web a wide berth and kept his eyes up.

He was so intently looking for dangers, that he stepped in a puddle of cold water. Danny was at first angry, but then very happy. Dang water, good thing I don't have any shoes. Wait a minute, I found water, Yea! I've got to bring some to Elizabeth.

Danny drank his fill of the fresh, cool water. He then broke off a leafy frond and made a make shift cup. He maked the spot of the spring in his head, sure he could find it again. He filled the cup with water and headed straight for the beach.

He came out further up than where he went in and drew a big arrow in the sand with his foot. He happily walked over towards Elizabeth. Something was different, he couldn't place it at first, then she stood up.

From somewhere she had found a new dress! It made his finding of water somehow seem less important. She always has to do one better than me! No wonder she is such a snob, the world bend to her will.

Danny walked up to Elizabeth and handed her the cup. "Nice dress, but isn't it a little big? Oh, by the way, I found a spring and stay out of the jungle, there are poisonous things in there."

I don’t know how long I sat on the beach, but I was burning up! I looked around for shade, but there wasn’t any to be found. I lie on the ground and covered my face with some cloth I found in the bag.

Soon I had a feeling of someone next to me. I pulled the cloth from my face and looked up to find Daniel. He was holding something, but what was it? I made it to my feet slowly as he held it out to me. It was a cup of sorts with something in it. I was afraid to take it from him and then he spoke,

“Nice dress, but isn’t it a little big? Oh, by the way, I found a spring and stay out of the jungle, there are poisonous things in there.”

“Oh…so this is water Daniel?” I questioned as I reached out to take the cup from him.

“Yes Elizabeth. It is water, but did you hear the rest of what I said?”

“Yes Daniel, I did. I just wanted to be sure this was water before I took it from you. I am so thirsty right now! Thank you for the compliment on the dress. I found a bag over there. There are some men’s clothing in there if you wish to look thru it. I just wanted to get something that would cover me from your view. As for me goin into the jungle, I have to get out of this sun! It is too hot out here. The jungle is going to be the only safe place we have Daniel.” I finished as I took a sip of the water. It tasted so good! So crisp and so clear. How much I wanted to have more or to go swim in it. Anything! Were Daniel and I going to survive this??

Danny

"You got that dress out of a bag floating in the water? Give me that bag!" Danny dumps the bag out on the beach. It's mostly men's clothes, but Danny hears something go 'Clank'. Danny picks up the clothes, one by one, and gives them a shake. He is rewarded by a couple of objects falling out of an old shirt.

Danny holds them up triumphantly for Elizabeth to see. One is a Sailor's knife with a marlin spike, the other a small tin of... fishing weights and hooks! "This is Great!", he shouts. He is so estatic that he picks up Elizabeth and spins her around before setting her down again.

He takes another look at the items poured out of the sack. "This would only be perfect if... Yes!" Danny holds up an old pair of deck shoes and dances a jig. After the dance, Danny put them on, too big. So he stuffs a rag into the toe of each shoe, so they fit.

"What were you saying again?" he asks Elizabeth. "Oh yes, some shelter from the sun." he answers himself. Danny holds up the knife, "With this I can build a fine shelter." He drapes the old shirt over Elizabeth's head, "Here keep this over your head, you know you gotta stay out of the sun."

Danny then walks over to where he entered the Jungle in search of water. He finds a square of four trees near the beach. He strips the braches from the tree and cleans all the vegetation out close to the trees. Using long twigs and torn rags, he soon has the frame of a hut built. Broad palm leaves complete the roof and the walls.

"Elizabth, your mansion awaits." He then walks over to the arrow he dug in the sand and carefully, hacks out a path to the spring. He makes another cup and brings Elizabeth some more water. He returns to the spring with the first cup, slakes his thirst and fills the cup and also brings it to Elizabeth.

By now it's starting to get dark, so fishing will have to wait until the next day.

When I told Daniel that I had found the bag, he seemed to change his tone with me. When I handed it to him, he sort of ripped it from my hands. I just let out a gasp unable to speak. What was he looking for? There wasn’t anything in there that would save us except for some more clothing or such. I watched as Danny went thru it frantically.

Soon he stood before me as he held up his findings. To me it looked like nothing, but Daniel was so excited. I smiled at him and then he totally surprised me. He came over to me and picked me up and started to spin me around before he set me back down. He went back to the sack and found some shoes and he did a dance alone at that point. I crossed my arms and tried to hide my face. Daniel was so excited it was funny yet cute at the same time.

I was wondering if he had forgotten what it was I was asking about, but he hadn’t. He got back to the shelter and then took off to the jungle again. Before he left, he put an old shirt over my head to protect me from the sun. I looked up at him sort of surprised, but he was being really nice. Maybe he wasn’t as bad as I thought. I watched as he entered the jungle again and I lie on the beach napping.

“Elizabeth, your mansion awaits.” I heard Daniel say. I blinked my eyes in the bright sun as I looked up at him. He stood there holding his hand out to me. Once he had helped me to my feet, he went to the edge of the jungle where he had dug an arrow. He hacked a clearing to the hut and then was off again. I didn’t know where too, but I was just happy we had some shelter. It was a pretty good little hut he had made out of a square of four trees near the beach, striped braches from the tree, cleaned all the vegetation out close to the trees, long twigs and torn rags made the frame of the hut, while broad palm leaves completed the roof and the walls. I felt cooler already. I just smiled as I took my seat in the corner of the hut. So this was where he and I were going to sleep? I just looked around as I waited for Daniel to come back.

He wasn’t gone long before he returned with the cup again with some fresh water. It tasted so good. I was so hungry and mentioned it to Daniel, but he said that it was getting dark and fishing would have to wait. I was okay with that since I wasn’t that hungry. I was just tired from all of the stress we had tossed at us.

I was out like a light within moments. The sounds of the jungle were so peaceful. It was amazing! I lived in a country setting at home so I was used to the quiet, but not like this. Even in my sleepless state though I could still tell what was going on around me. I felt something on my feet and just tried to kick it away. It wouldn’t move and seemed to get closer. I opened my sleepy eyes and looked down to my feet. In the moonlight I could see a form of a snake. I gulped back a scream and was just frozen. I didn’t know if it was poisonous or not, but I wasn’t going to take a chance.

“Daniel? Are you awake? Daniel?" I whispered as I hoped he could hear me.

Danny

He was almost asleep, when her whispering voice came abruptly into his mind and he rolled over towards the door to the hut. He was about to chastize Elisabeth when his eyes caught a slithering movement from near her.

Danny whipped out the knife extending the marlin spike in one motion and stabbed down, piercing the body of the snake near the head. The snake tried to bite the intruding metal to no avail, it finally expired with a shudder. Danny tossed the snake off the knife with a flick of his wrist and wiped the marlin spike on the side of the hut.

"Don't worry princess, it was just a snake and it's dead now. I think I'll sleep in here tonight, just in case. You can go back to sleep now, princess." Danny laid on of the old shirts over her to help keep her warm. The other he pulled over himself. It gets cold at night around here.

Danny was a little surprized to wake up with Elizabeth's arms around him. He carefully tried to get up without waking her. Afterall, there's work to be done.

Daniel turned over as I heard a disgusted sound come from his throat. I was sure he was going to yell at me, but when he saw what had awoken me…he calmed down. He was quick on his feet as he pulled out the knife and killed the snake. I sat there stunned as my heart was racing.

“Don’t worry princess, it was just a snake and it’s dead now. I think I’ll sleep in here tonight, just in case. You can go back to sleep now, princess.” I heard him say as I lie back down. I was quickly getting back to sleep when Daniel put a shirt over me. I felt warmer already. I watched him as he lie down on the other side of the hut.

I am not sure of what time it was or anything, but I thought I felt the snake move again. I looked down and looked and there was nothing. I looked over to Daniel and he was sound asleep. I didn’t want to wake him for nothing. I crawled over to him and lie beside him. I don’t know what had possessed me to do it, but it felt natural. I snuggled up beside him as I started to feel warmer. My arm automatically moved to wrap around him.

The morning came and I awoke to warmth on my shoulder and sunshine in my eyes. I sat up in the hut and rubbed my eyes as I struggled to wake up. I was still a little sore, but I was sure that was normal. I looked down by my feet to see the knife and snake gone. The snake was huge…had it taken off with the knife? I jumped up and ran out of the hut to the beach. I just wanted to get away from it! As I ran screaming, I ran into Daniel. He caught me as I screamed even louder.

“Princess, it is just me. Are you okay?” He asked as held me tight to him to calm me down. I stopped screaming and tried to catch my breath as I lifted my head to look up at him.

“Yes Daniel, I am alright. Just that when I woke up the snake and the knife were gone so I just got scared that it was still out there someplace.”

“No princess,” I heard him say as he let me go, “I took it this morning. I thought that since it was dead and all and we needed food, I would cook it if I can get a fire up and going. I am just getting together the necessities for the fire now. Why don’t you go and get some more of the twigs and such you were looking for yesterday.” He finished as I felt a little more at ease now. Daniel was acting better than he had on the boat. This was all so new to me! He and I had been at each others throats and now we were being civil to each other. It was just a major turn of events. I took off to gather some other things as he had asked.

Danny

Danny watched Elizabeth walk away as she went looking for sticks for the fire. She was an attractive girl and she was not a stuck-up bitch, like I had first thought. Better to be marooned with someone like her rather than one of the crew, like 'the swede'. haha

When Elizabeth brought back some sticks, Danny managed to get a fire started by using a piece of glass to concentrate the sun's rays. He had already cut the snakes body into pieces and cooked them on sticks. He had saved the entrails of the snake for fishing bait.

He and Elizabeth sat down and ate for the first time since they had been marooned. It was wonderful! They finished all of the snake and the water Danny had refilled the leaf glasses with. "Let's go catch some fish, Princess."

The sun is still in our faces from the East. "That way the fish don't see our shadows." He shows Elizabeth how to bait the hook with bits of snake. The string is tied to a sturdy pole and the hook is cast into the water.

A long time goes by and the fish have not bitten yet. "I was afraid of that.", Danny says. "Keep trying Elizabeth and check to see if your bait is still there." Danny walks a little way into the jungle, then returns peeling the branches off a 4' long stick. He sharpens it's end with the knife and takes off all his clothes except for a loin-cloth looking thing and wades into the water. "Don't worry, I'm just off to get us some fish."

Danny gets chest deep in the water, then holds his breath and dives under. He repeats this after he catches his breath. After about a 1/2 anhours he wades out with some fish wiggling on the stick.

He hands Elizabeth the stick, then gets dressed again. He cleans some of the fish with the knife, saving the guts for another try at fishing tomorrow. "That is how to clean fish, Princess. Think you can do it?"

“That is how to clean fish, Princess. Think you can do it?” Daniel asked as he looked at me.

“I don’t know Daniel. I have never touched a knife or anything.”

“Well Princess, here you go. Touch the knife and touch the fish. I can’t do all of the work here you know. You need to help out. I am not saying that you haven’t been, but you have to do more than get wood and I am sure you will be doing more than you ever had to back home.” Daniel said to me as he held the knife out to me. I took it from him and held it by the end of the handle. “You won’t get anything done that way Princess. Hold it firmly in your hand and do as I showed you.” He said as he stood behind me. He wrapped his left arm around my waist as his right hand held mine. He took the knife in his left hand and put it into my right hand. “Like that Princess. You got it?” He asked as he let me go. I didn’t know what I was doing.

I watched as Daniel took off yet again. I didn’t know where he was off to this time. He didn’t tell me. Maybe off to the bathroom or something. I didn’t know, but knew he would come back. He has been thus far.

I started to cut the fish and I did a pretty good job if I had to say myself. I just hoped that it was the way Daniel had wanted it. I didn’t do it the way he had shown me. I did whatever worked. I got the stupid thing cut up. That was the main thing. I saw Daniel coming back down the beach. I lifted my right hand to shade my eyes from the sun to watch him coming toward me. What did he have now??

Danny

Danny walked back down to Elizabeth carrying two ripe coconuts. He tossed them at her feet and looked at the fish she mangled with the knife. Guess I'm gonna be the one catching and cleaning the fish. "When you finish working with a knife, you have to clean the blade princess, other wise it'll rust." Danny picked up a cloth from the dwindling pile of rags and whipes the blade clean. He wrapped the mauled fish into a leaf, saving it for bait.

"Those coconuts are going to add to the food we have. First we cut a hole in the coconut and drink the milk, then we bash it with something to break it up and eat the meat. It's good and beats fish day in and day out. You're gonna get tired of fish really fast, princess." Danny cut a hole in one of the coconuts for Elizabeth to drink from. He did the same with the other for himself. "Good huh?" he said as he drank the luke-warm milk.

"Hey Elizabeth," Danny said once his coconut was empty, "if you want to wash up, just let me know and I'll take you to the spring. I'll have to stay close, but I promise you I won't look, princess."
Danny set his coconut down and walked into the jungle looking for something to break the coconut apart with.

After a few minutes Danny returned with a stone, a stick and some tough vine. Danny used the knife to cut the stick so it would hold the stone, he then tied the stone to the stick with some vine. "Presto, jungle hammer."

Danny hit the coconut with the hammer, which promptly fell apart. After fixing the 'hammer' a few times, it finally broke the coconut open, exposing the fresh, white meat. He pased some to Elizabeth and they knawed on it. Day 2 being marooned and we're doing pretty good, I wonder what's going to happen next.

The coconut was good. It was so sweet, but seemed like a lot to go thru to get food. I guess being marooned, I had to get use to doing things on my own. I would have to show Daniel that I could do things. I hadn’t done too well with the fish, but I would show him somehow.

I was so hot that I did want to feel refreshed.

“Daniel, could you please take me to that spring? I am so hot and I want to cool off. Please?” I asked as I gnawed on the coconut again.
