And I thought my Verizon bill was excessive....

THE tiny Gulf state of Qatar, famed mainly for having the Arab world's largest reserves of natural gas, added another record to its name yesterday – one of the world's most expensive telephone numbers.
At a charity event in the capital of Doha, a Qatari bidder paid $3.65 million for the mobile phone number 666-6666.

The winner, who made the highest bid 10 minutes into the auction, declined requests for interviews. Eight people took part in the auction, organized by Qatar Telecom to help raise funds for charity, paying 3,000 Qatari riyals ($1094) per ticket.

Funds from the ticket sales were given to a local charity, while the 10 million riyals from the sale of the number will be used to expand medical services.

OK. they got $3.65 million for it.

Where did Qatar Telecom get it and how much did it cost.

Actually, where do telephone numbers come from??

So what gives here? Quatar has 7 digit numbers just like North America?

English numbers are different. I have two numbers from China that are 15 digits (7-8).

Where is central command for 7 digits (3-4) ??

666-6666 bought with oil money?

Someone should know.

It depends.

Many nations have a dedicated "country code" assigned by the International Telecommunications Union. For example, France has country code 33, Switzerland 41. Within these countries, there is a bureau which creates and maintains a dialling plan, and communicates this plan to all parties.

For countries that share a country code with other nations, there is an independent body established. For example, country code 1 is shared by Canada, the USA, and several Carribean nations (Mexico dropped out around 1990 and got its own country code). The "North American Numbering Plan" used to be maintained by the Bell System. In 1984 the responsibility went to BellCore, a shared entity owned by all seven Baby Bells. It's now contracted out to a private firm (Neustar).

Qatar has six-digit landline numbers, and seven-digit mobile numbers (56x-xxxx, and now 66x-xxxx).

Heh, my feelings exactly!

Why so many 666 threads today?

Cuz 6/6/06 is coming up? I don't know? I heard there's a new Omen movie coming out that day! I hope so!
