The not so empty nest

The only or last of a family’s kids are out of the home. Whether it’s a two parent of single parent household, who ever is left behind is feeling that empty nest, but they soon find their child left someone or something behind.

For example: son or daughter had a friend or ex who was constantly over and that person is still around the neighborhood. Maybe their own homelife wasn’t great maybe their kid was the only friend or partner they had. Either way they’d like to still come over.

Or for a more supernatural twist:

Imaginary friend or bogeyman. Yeah, their kid wasn’t interacting with them much before they left but they still felt a connection and aren’t ready to move on as well. They see mom/dad feeling the same way and make contact

An idea in this vein I've been kicking around is the boyfriends best friend, the proverbial third wheel.

In this case, the woman's daughter was very popular and dated the popular guy. The boyfriends best-friend was the guy who had a car and would drive them everywhere, just to be included.

The mom always felt so bad for him. Good looking but shy, and not among the popular kids, he was easy for them to use.

When her daughter and boyfriend go off to college, the best friend is left behind and he keeps finding a lame excuse to drop by. That's when she finds out that his home life is awful and her heart goes out to him.

I had some families in my life that had an open door policy for dinners or just hanging out, it was always lovely to have a safe and nurturing place to go when you didn't always have that available at home, so i resonate emotionally with this idea

Turning it sexual after the family's kids have gone off to college is tantalizing, and hits that not-quite-taboo zone that is interesting to me

What I struggle with is that this would then be another cheating wife story. Ok, maybe a single mom or dad?
