The wife yearns at a very deep level - probably without even being aware of it - for a 'real man' to own her. She would likely be too embarrassed in this age of PC equalityequalityequality to admit to her need. The husband is a modern man: always shares the household tasks, always seeks her opinions, always insists on joint decisions, always strives to understand the other person's viewpoint and takes an infinite time to come to a decision... which is really nice... really very, very nice... but at some deeper level not what she wants.

After ten years of marriage and a couple of kiddies, all should be good... but is not.

She begins to notice the gentleman next door. Ex-military, no-nonsense, assertive, decisive. Cares for an infirm wife. Thirty years older but well/powerfully built and keeps in trim.

One day he knocks on the couple's door to discuss an issue concerning their joint driveway...

I think you are spot on. I work with women that range from 20's to 60's and sometimes we go out and have drinks together. They admit who attracts them and some like hairy, some like smooth but they don't seems to like men that are not masculine and look like they spend more time in front of a mirror then they do. They want manly men.
Small focus group but that's what I am being told so your story beginning is very accurate.
Husband's are for partners Other men are for fucking

It’s a classic set up. A happy but slightly bored wife, needs a physically and mentally dominant man to make her feel alive again.

Have just realised that this was an idea being discussed off-site by a group of us some time back. It could be somebody's got there ahead of me as regards the writing.

Delicious start

This is a fun idea that delves into the tropes of women wanting the "bad boy" vs. the "nice" guy along with "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. If done well it can be a very erotic story.
