Ever since I was a little girl I was scared to death of thunderstorms. Somehow I thought I would grow out of it, but I never did.
Tonight might have been the worst storm ever. I was shivering under the blankets while thunder crashed and lightning flashed around me. Tears filled my eyes as I tried to conquer my fear, but it was no use.
When I was a little girl, I would run to my parents bedroom and sleep with them. It was the only time I really felt safe. It was too bad I was too old for that anymore.
Then a bolt of lightning hit the tree in our back yard and a branch fell to the ground with a loud thud. I screamed. Then I pulled on a tee shirt and headed for their room.
They were both fast asleep. I called out their names until they woke up. Groggily, they asked me what was wrong.
"I'm scared," I confessed. "Can I sleep with you tonight?"
They looked at their grown daughter like I was crazy. But they said yes. Happily, I slipped into bed between Mom and Dad.
At the time, I had no clue as to what that would lead to....
