To smooth over any animosity and to prove that we don't just sit around hating Europe all of the time, I suggest we pitch in a few lines about what we like and admire about the Old countries...

Britain...
Always admired how a country that started off the size of Pennsylvania could end up controlling 80% of the surface (land and sea) of the earth
Always liked Winston Churchill, William Pitt, Elizabeth I and II, Victoria, Lord Salisbury (the Prime Minister)
The Battle that the movie Zulu was based on, Roarke's Drift maybe? That battle makes the defenders of the Alamo look like amateurs (of course they were)
English tenacity and ability to withstand long periods of suffering without totally cracking...World War II and the Tommies in the trenches in World War I
Rugby, rugby, rugby....very cool sport
English beer
Wonderful contributions to world literature

Germany

Admired Otto von Bismarck, a man ruthless at times but also showed balls of steel at others
German beer
German women
beautiful countryside
awesome automobiles
Prussian toughness, Rhinelander intellect

Italy
Food and its importance in bringing people together
art and literature
the Roman traditions and contributions

That's all for now, want to get the thread up and celebrate the contributions of our European friends

Rule: No mentioning of climate or missiles allowed in any future posts on this thread...this is for being nice only!!!!!!!

How can you forget.......

...the best thing to come out of Europe, Private video?

:D

Ah hell, forgot Benny Hill and Monty Python

You neglected France's contributions to world culture: French Maids, The "Can Can," and Champagne.

Don't forget beer either!!! I think that was also an european invention!!

i mentioned beer, but I believe that beer and wine's history extends back to prehistory....but it took Europeans to make it something great

As much as we Euro trash would love to claim to have invented beer we can't cause the Eygptions (sp) carved a recipe for it in one of their ancient tombs.

I think the thing that makes me most proud about my own nation is the odd fact that the British account fro 50% of all patents and inventions and we're just a tiny tiny island. yet we are driven to invent a better mouse trap again and again...?

I am a student of British history and like I said earlier, British achievements for such a tiny place are unparalleled

You may be interested then to hear that they've just found the wreck of the battle ship Hood, you can find more info about it by going to the Channel 4 website.

cool, I will..
British sea-power is very fascinating to study. Robert Massie wrote a helluva book called Dreadnought which is really a 700 page picture of the entire era on the late 18 and early 1900s but concentrated a lot on Jackie Fisher as well as the leadership on Britain and the German Empire(I forgot the title they eventually gave Fisher) It is very well-written if you like that sort of thing.

We've got to have something to do with our day....

I once heard it explained like this, if an American shout's "god bless America" then other Americans will say yes or amen but if an Englishman shouts "god bless England" then he will at best get stared at as if he's mad and at worst be told to shut the fuck up, I've yet to work out why this should be.

If I put up a Union Jack flag outside my house then all my neighbours would think I'm a racist but when I see footage of the USA I often see people with the Stars and Stripes hung outside their house, I wonder if anybody says anything to them.

Not normally.

The Stars and Bars...people tend to get a little wacky. But the Stars and Stripes...never heard of someone getting bonked for that.

is there a differance between the stars and stripes and the stars and bars, have I made some kind of culturale mistake, please explain.

Stars and Stripes = Old Glory (The Traditional American Flag)

Stars and Bars = The Confederate Flag (The Flag of the southern states that attempted to secede in the 1860's)

Ah I see what you mean but I was right, I did mean the stars and stripes in my original post.
