Is it upon us? Hell if I know, but there are some interesting similarities.

The political polarization is profound. Bush is either hated or thought of as the lesser of two evils. The battle lines are now drawn between the coasts instead of north and south. Instead of slavery the issue is illegal immigration. Both the president and the congress are attempting to side step the issue not unlike Buchanon and the congress of that period. It's a festering sore. States are calling out their Guardsmen to patrol the border, a federal job. More and more of the communities in the 'red' states are finding ways to enforce the immigration laws that the federal government is supposed to be doing. Even some communities in the 'blue' states are doing the same. The Republicans are fractured and the Democrats have no plan beyond demonizing the Republicans. Private citizens are forming militias to patrol the border. Something not seen since southern militias formed to retrieve, or prevent, slaves from escaping while northern militias formed for quite the opposite reason.

Most of the parts are in place. Can it happen? Will it happen? Why or why not?

Maybe in France. Not here.

I wouldn't be too sure. When 'smalltown' middle America starts reacting and the politicos do nothing for fear of their own position bad things can happen.

Last summer, I tried to hire kids from the high school to work my hay field, I failed, they won't do it, too hard, too hot and too dirty. Even at $12.00/hour they won't do it.

It took less than an hour to hire 4 immigrant labourers who worked for $8.00/hour and worked from 7 to 9 without complaint.

When they pass the laws making it impossible for me to hire the illegals, or raising the risk to prison and 6 digit fines, I'll have to buy my hay from Canada and save money, time and labour.

I know how to run a bailer. I'm pretty awesome at it. 12 bucks an hour? Shit, I'd do it.

Your close to giving birth to your first farmhand. Plan for some more.

Even $12/hr. would be a horrible return on investment. *chuckle*

My parents did a lot of "creative" bookkeeping with my brother and I as "employees" that made shitloads of money and they were able to write that off. Or something like that.

I know from people who have gone to Iraq, it's civil war there now. The latest news I heard is that one American and one Canadian soldier got killed this morning in the crossfire.

America may not be having a real civil war right now, but I envisage there'd be civil wars throughout the world in the near future if we are not careful.

I pray for the coalition troops.

I have 20 employees...you asswipes are fucking ignorant and you pretend you don't know it.....sad pussies

No kidding, I've already sunk more than I want to think about in this project, the nursery alone cost almost 5k to redecorate. I don't even want to go into doctor bills, and we're doing it all again starting next month..

But, since nobody can decide what to do about illegals, and the simple fact that if they do try to get rid of them, or control them will make them even more valuable, I think the market will speak and we'll find a way to keep the cheap plentiful labour.

Civil war? No. Militia action and some murders? Perhaps.

France raised their terror alert level today.

It is now at RUN.

The only higher level is Capitulate.

Percentage of population homocide rates are 265% higher in Californina than in Iraq among both US and UK personel. Sooooooo, your point is? And what does that have to do with this thread?

And, in fact, Coalition deaths have been trending down for almost 6 months now.

Times have changed. I primed tobacco as a kid for good money (although I'll be damned if I can remember how much). Now I'll bet kids won't touch it.

I suspect there's a lot of immigrants filling those roles, although the tobacco farmers aren't anywhere near as plentiful as they used to be.

That reminds me of a joke. I can't remember if I or anyone else posted it before but:

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He
concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the president exclaims,"that's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously
watching as the president sits, head in hands.

Finally, the president looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"
