SANDPOINT, Idaho (Reuters) - Hoping to end a two-day standoff, Idaho police on Thursday sought to coax six children out of their rural compound where they have been holed up with a pack of attack dogs and possibly a cache of guns.

The McGuckin children, aged 8 to 16, closed themselves off in their home on Tuesday night after their mother was arrested. Since then, police have kept vigil outside the property, which is located in Garfield Bay, about 10 miles (16 km) north of Sandpoint in rural northern Idaho.

"We're putting no pressure on the children. They haven't broken any laws," Bonner County Patrol Sergeant Robert Rahn said Wednesday. "We're exploring avenues such as family members and friends."

The police standoff has brought many local residents uncomfortable memories of the 1992 confrontation in nearby Ruby Ridge, where federal agents shot and killed the wife and son of white supremacist Randy Weaver on his property.

The children's father, Michael McGuckin, died of multiple sclerosis earlier in May, and neighbors have described the family as reclusive and deeply suspicious of government and social agencies.

"That's exactly what we're dealing with," Rahn said.

The mother, JoAnn McGuckin, 46, was arrested on Tuesday after leaving with a police deputy who lured her from the home with an offer of grocery money. She has been charged with felony injury to a child, although officials declined to discuss details of the case.

When police returned to the property intending to place the children in the custody of social services workers, one of the sons yelled "get the guns" and another released a pack of attack dogs out of the basement, officials said.

With those dogs still roaming the property Thursday, police were seeking to communicate with the children over loudspeaker, and had enlisted the help of a 19-year-old sister who had recently moved out of the house, Rahn said.

He added that one of the first priorities was figuring out how to get the dogs under control. "We're working on several options, the humane society and vets," he said.

While police repeatedly said they planned no abrupt action, neighbors warned they could be in for a long wait if they hope the children will leave the home of their own accord.

The children have reportedly been caring for themselves for the past year, eating soup made from lake water and lilies, and have grown used to living in a home that has no power, water or heat.

This makes me pretty sad, that something like this should happen. Is it the mother's fault? Did she make them so distrusting? The systems fault? Is there something that could have been done beforehand to prevent this? Is it no one's fault?

It seems the police are doing the best they can, rather than attacking, they're negotiating. Which is one up for the Idaho cops in a very bad situation.

I heard on the news that the mother is mentally ill. It just seems awfully harsh to arrest the mother right now. I mean, those kids have been through a lot, and I bet all those police are scaring them more. Seems to me, there should have been a more low key approach in the first place.

who's at fault?

that is difficult to determine, but placing myself in the situation of the children, I would say that the police are overreacting to a domestic situation that could be handled much more easily and less-intrusive than the current situation.

The children are only trying to protect themselves... the whole situation can be easily misinterpreted as a "stand-off" rather than an effort to assist minors in a difficult situation.

This scenerio, at least as it is portrayed here and (probably) by the media could possibly escalate into something entirely unmanageable.

What a shame.

I read about this in the paper, the dogs number 27 or so. My question is this: How in the hell do you have 27 dogs when six kids are eating lily pad soup? I only have four and they eat me out of house and home.

I don't beleive the authorities are overreacting. The home situation is bad and will only get worse. The 19 year old daughter that had moved away is afraid to approach the house because she fears her brother will shoot her. That sounds like a police presence is probably a good thing.

I saw this on the news today-it is a tragic situation. A woman who was out walking her dog was attacked by the pack of dogs & injured quite badly. They said that the mother was mentally ill & I believe that one of her children died recently & the cause was malnutrtion & neglect. I didn't see the whole story, but it is terrible to think of children living in such conditions.

Ended today

GARFIELD BAY, Idaho (CNN) -- Five children ended their five-day standoff with authorities Saturday and voluntarily left their rundown house in rural Idaho where they had been holed up with weapons and half-wild dogs.

Describing sheriff's deputies as tired but happy, one sheriff's department official said authorities got the ending they wanted.

"It was exactly the one we were hoping for: safely, quietly with no undue pressure on the children," said Bonner County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Robert Rahn.

The children are being treated at Bonner General Hospital in Sandpoint, Idaho, according to Director of Nursing Susan Montgomery.

Rahn said the children will be turned over to the state's Children's Services Department, which would then be in charge of their care.

There seems to be a lot of people that want to help the kids out. Good to know that things might start looking up for them now.

Of course, they still had to live with a crazy mom, a dying dad, a pack of wild dogs, a house with guns but no food, and inadequate facilities. So now we have to hope that those kids aren't so hopelessly fucked up that they decide to take out a McDonald's (or their next school) when they have a bad day.

"The police standoff has brought many local residents uncomfortable memories of the 1992 confrontation in nearby Ruby Ridge, where federal agents shot and killed the wife and son of white supremacist Randy Weaver on his property."

I watched a programme on TV about a month ago all about the Ruby Ridge incident and they talked to Randy Weaver and his daughter, and if he's a white supremacist then he's the nicest one I've ever seen, yes he did visit the ayryan(sp) nation compound but he said he didn't like their ways and didn't go back.

After the way the FBI/ATF and all the other goons who shot his wife and son lied I think I believe Randy Weaver more than them.
