The trees whipped by him a sea of green that began to thin down. He watched the last of them whip by and suddenly he was looking out over a series of wide dusty plains. A few cacti and rocks greeted him as he stepped on the gas pedal of his black ford pickup. The road was rocky and every once in a while the cab would jostle as he hit a particularly deep pothole. He bounced with the car his large frame moving with the beast of a vehicle. His hat a white Stetson sat in the passenger side along with a folder of paper. His large tan hands drummed against the steering wheel as he hummed along with the classical country song playing on the radio. His bright green eyes were currently hidden behind a pair of simple mirrored aviators.

Boris “Bo” Calvil was an older man. His face was tan and leathered from working the ranch. His hair which was once wild and black as the night was beginning to turn gray. A rough five o clock shadow adorned his face hiding some of his more serious wrinkles. There was a cup of coffee warming his crotch and the cab was toasty and warm.

The phone on his belt rang causing him to curse. His calloused finger moved to the dial nudging it down and turning the volume down real low. Once he was sure it wasn’t going to be heard he reached down unclipping the phone and hitting the answer button on the touch screen.

“Carl?” Bo asked hitting the speaker option so he could have both hands on the wheel “What’s up?”

“You on the road yet?” His lead ranch hand Carl asked yelling even though he didn’t need to. Bo winced and flicked the volume down before Carl got the chance to blow his ear out.

“Bene on the road for a few hours now Carl” Bo said chuckling “The conference in Austin ended yesterday remember? I should be home in an hour”

“Great” Carl said hesitating before clearing his throat “Your sister called”

“Lord” Bo said shaking his head “That gossipy old crone! What did she want?”

“Said something about setting you up with a friend of hers” Carl said chuckling.
“She’s been trying to set me up with friends of hers since I hit puberty Carl” Bo said chuckling “I will see you soon Carl”

“See you soon Bo” Carl responded disconnecting the call.

Sadie Grissom waited until Connor passed out before she packed her duffle bag, took his tip jar money from his pocket and slipped out the door of their hotel. Her jaw was sore from where he had backhanded her when he came home smelling like whiskey, stale cigarettes, and cheap perfume. She put the car in neutral and rolled out of the parking lot.

That had been hours ago. Then, the car had been rattling for about twenty miles. And now, it had stopped with a hideous clank. She had no phone and about forty ones in her pocket. She knew that it would never be enough to get the car fixed. Connor would be coming after her.

She knew she should pop the hood of the car, but instead, she laid down on the hood. Stretched out her long legs, crossed her boots at the ankles, and put on her beatup straw cowboy hat and soaked up the sun while she was waiting for someone to come along and give her a ride. She knew she looked a little bit like a country pin up girl on the hood of her car.

He was halfway home when he came across her.

There wasn’t much to see on the long drive back to his ranch. So finding a girl on top of a car was something that demanded his immediate attention. He slowed his truck to a stop right next to hers and without a second hesitation popped the door open. He grabbed his hat and put it on over his head securing it as he stepped out and his boots crunched over the gravel.

“Hello their Ma’am” He said his eyes sweeping up and down her body. They were hidden by his aviators which was probably good as he couldn’t help but check her out. She was a young one with the kind of body that god only graced some girls with. Such was her beauty that he starred a little longer than what was necessary.

“Having car trouble?” He finally asked coming over to her “Do you need a ride? Or want me to take a look and see if I can get her up and running?”

Sadie sat up with her hands behind her on the hood of her car. She smiled at the fellow that got out of his truck to help her. She was braless under her white tank top, and her cut off jeans were short enough to show off the sweet spot where her smooth thighs met her round ass cheeks. Her body was the perfect combination of sleek and curvy.

"Mister, I think this thing is beyond help." She slid off of the hood of the car. "I would take a ride though... I have to keep moving." Her eyes darted down the road, she knew Conner would come after her. She hoped the slight bruise on her jaw didn't show too much. There were also lavender hand prints on her arms where Conner had grabbed her and pinned her down.

"I am not exactly sure where I am going. I am looking for a job..." She let her voice trail off. She couldn't read the man's face. He was good looking, but older, and with his eyes hidden by his sunglasses, she couldn't tell what he was thinking. She stuck her hand out.

"I am sorry. I should have introduced myself. I am Sadie. Sadie Grissom." Her hands were small and her fingernails were painted baby pink, but she had a good handshake. And she did her best to look him in the eye when she shook his hand.

He noted the bruises the minute she said she needed to keep going. His eyes narrowed behind the mirrored lenses contracting with anger ever so slightly. He was an old school man. The kind who didn’t take to any one beating on a woman. He was also the oldest of five sisters each of them drove him crazy but he loved them all fiercely.

So to say he had a problem with female abuse was putting it mildly.

“You can come with me” He said going over to his truck and opening the door with a jerk “I’ll arrange a tow for your vehicle”

He waited for her to get in doing his best not to check out her ass before closing it. He reminded himself that he was old enough to be her father and turned his boots crunching as he moved to the truck and got into the driver seat. He pulled out his phone and made a quick call letting a tow company know where her car was before pulling out.

“I have a ranch a few miles up the road” He explained as they drove “You can bed there and we can see about getting you some work on the farm. My name is Boris but you can call me Bo.”

Sadie slid into the front seat of his truck and she tossed her duffle bag onto the floorboard. She sighed in relief, she wasn't sure why, but she wasn't afraid of Bo. She was afraid of Conner, and she knew she wouldn't be safe if he found her. When she closed her eyes, she could still feel Conner's hot breath on the back of her neck as he pushed her into the wall and told her all of the horrible things he would do to her if she left him.

She closed her eyes and leaned back, sort of snuggling up against the warm seat of the truck. She felt some of the tension leave her body, as her worries about Conner faded. She felt herself yawn deeply, she hadn't let herself go to sleep last night, because she was waiting for Conner to pass out so she could run away. And now in the warm truck, with the grip of her fears releasing, she dozed off as the truck rumbled towards Bo's ranch.

She tucked her feet underneath her, her long legs folding up easily. She nestled her hands under her cheek and feel sound asleep.

He noted her falling asleep and smiled softly. He glanced at her taking her in once more. She really was a pretty young thing to young and to pretty to be caught up in any sort of abusive relationship. Maybe a little bit too trusting given she fell asleep in a stranger’s car. Not that he was going to do anything to her!

Ten minutes later he swung off the high way and onto a dirty road. The truck bounced harder as he drove causing him to place a hand on her to keep her steady. After a few more seconds a group of buildings appeared in the distance along with a water tower and windmill. A fence ran around the perimeter and a sign carved in wood proclaimed it was Long Water Ranch.

He drove through the gate and parked his car right outside a beautiful two-story ranch house. He got out and moved over to her side gathering her in his arms just as Carl appeared. The older black man paused as he watched Bo carry the girl a question in his dark brown eyes as he moved to join him.

“Broke down on the side of the road” Bo explained before Carl could ask “Abusive relationship she said she was running from. See about getting her some quarters, will you?”

“Of course Bo” Carl said knowing well enough not to argue with his oldest friend “Need anything else?”

“Nope” Bo said moving into his home. He carefully carried the girl up the steps and laid her down in the guest bedroom. Once she was down he went downstairs moving outside to check on the farm.

Sadie slept for several hours. It had been a long time since she had slept so well. The bed was soft and the quilt she was covered with was clean and freshly laundered. She awakened in the middle of the night with her stomach rumbling. She tiptoed out of the bedroom and quietly went downstairs. She was sure her host wouldn't begrudge her a glass of milk.

Sadie found a mason jar in the cabinet and poured herself a glass of milk and then curled up in one of the kitchen chairs and sipped it.

She heard footsteps in the hall.

"I hope you don't mind. I woke up hungry." She offered softly. She hoped she hadn't misjudged her host.

“If you’re hungry you are going to need more than a glass of milk” Bo said from his position at the door frame. The older man was clad in only a pair of sleep pants. His chest was bare revealing his tan defined muscles and what looked like a burned brand on his pec. His feet were bare as he padded over flicking on the lights and illuminating the room.

“Nice to see you finally up and about” Bo remarked pulling the fridge open and pulling out a cartoon of farm fresh eggs. He moved to the stove and after rustling up a pan began to melt some butter in it.

“Don’t get used to the bed” He told her as he cracked four eggs and whisked them with a glass bottle of milk.

“Tomorrow if you’re looking to stay you start work” He explained pouring the egg milk mixture into the skillet and sprinkling in some salt, pepper, and seasoning “We will put you up in the quarters with the other ranch hands and get you started on working. If you’re not up to staying then I will drive you into town in the morning”

Sadie swallowed her milk.

"I am happy to work. I know how to ride. I grew up out in East Texas. My aunt and uncle's place. " She said with a wry smile.

She dragged her fingers through her long hair. She smiled up at him as he cooked.

"I can cook too. And I used to clean hotel rooms. I am a hard worker. I just have made some bad choices as of late when it comes to .....companionship." She shrugged her shoulders.

She stretched out her long legs. "Is there anything I can do to help?"

She asked if she could help and Bo turned to answer her. His eyes flickered as they ran up and down her long legs. He took them in for several minutes before clearing his throat and coming over to her.

“Farm work mostly” He explained setting his food down “I have some animals that need tending that you might enjoy. Most of our work right now is preparing for the summer harvest and maintaining the farm. You caught us on our downtime. Me and the men have a few repairs to make to the buildings themselves and we might have you run and fetch the building supplies. If administration is more your game I could use a secretary to help me get the paperwork organized and things of that nature I’ll leave it up to you”

Sadie smiled when she noticed him looking at her legs. It was nice to be noticed. She played with the salt and pepper shaker on the table.

"I used to help my aunt keep the books and file the paperwork. I can get your office all organized if you would like."

Sadie took out her wallet from her back pocket. "I have id, and a social. I can work legal." She traced the burl of the wooden table with her fingertips. "Thanks for picking me up. I split in the middle of the night while my boyf-... I mean Conner was asleep. I needed to get away. I really appreciate it."

She lowered her eyes and started fidgeting with the salt shaker again.

“Hey no need to explain” Bo said his voice soft and patient as he came over to the girl and put his large hands on her. He caught the slip up about the boyfriend but didn’t pay it any mind. Instead he gave her a soft kind smile as he sat down next to her.

“You can start work right away and we will get you on the payroll” He told her patting her hand and releasing them “I don’t want you to worry about the past and instead focus on your future. Do some work for the next couple of days with us and then go from there. I have your car being worked on and so you will have a set of wheels if and when you feel you need to leave”

He gave her another kind smile and then got up.

“I’m going into town today if you want to come with and pick up somethings” He told her nodding his head at the door “I don’t think there is much in the house when it comes to feminine products so its probably best you come with”

It took some discipline for her to not wolf the eggs down. She was hungry and the eggs were hot and fresh. After she was done, she rinsed her plate and filled the pan with water. She went upstairs and showered. She wanted to rub one out under the hot water, but she didn't want to linger and hog the hot water.

She found another pair of tiny cut offs and a pink t shirt in her duffle bag. She tied her wet hair up in a ponytail. She barreled down the stairs to meet Bo and join him on the trip to town. She had the cash she had taken from Conner in her back pocket.

Things were looking up for Sadie Grissom.

Without saying a word he picked up his keys and with a nod told her to come on. The porch door swung open as they stepped out into the cool Texas morning. He moved towards his truck circling around the new black pickup as he opened the passenger door for her. Once she was in he slammed the door shut moved over to his own and climbed in. The keys slid in and the beast of a truck rumbled to life as country music began to fill the cab.

“The town were going to doesn’t have much” He explained to her as he moved onto the dusty road “but should have enough to get you by until I get to Austin.”

They moved off of the dirt road and onto the main highway. The town was thirty minutes away and Bo spent the time explaining to her the surrounding area and where they were. His neck of Texas was filled with ranchers and small farms that contributed to the department of agriculture. The town they were going to was the only town within thirty minutes of his place. He laughed at her shock when he explained there wasn’t so much as a Walmart in the town! He idly wondered how strange it must all seem to her to be so far out and removed from everything. She didn’t seem like the type to come from such a lifestyle but he long ago learned not to judge a book by its cover. For all he knew she could be a country girl she certainly looked the part.

Thirty minutes later they reached the border of the town. He drove into the towns one and only market place and parked to the side. A few people were milling about as he stepped out and he made sure to wave and tip his Stetson to them. Everyone in the town more or less knew him by name and he afforded them the same courtesy. The town’s population was an even thousand and its one claim to fame was the time Willie Nelson brown down in her. They still had the site of the event roped off!

Sadie stayed close to Bo as he walked around the store. She picked up a few things, some shampoo and soap, a hairbrush and a toothbrush, she got some feminine supplies. She found some jeans in her size and a pair of small work gloves. She calculated the money she had and she was pretty sure that she had enough cash.

She saw the man working behind the counter looking her legs up and down.

She placed her items on the counter, and watched Bo out of the corner of her eye.

“I got it” ‘He said pulling out his own wallet and handing the young clerk enough to pay for the tools and the clothing “Be seeing you Andrew”

He nodded his head at her to follow and stepped outside. He paused at his truck to load up the tools in the bed before pointing at the café right down the street. He walked to the building pointing out several places she might need to go to like the doctor’s office and market place.

“A man doesn’t let a woman pay for his meals” He told her his tone no nonsense as he led her into the diner “I’ll pay but starting tomorrow you work for me!”

"Good morning Bo!" A waitress said nodding her head at him "Coffee?"

"Of course Gladys" He said smiling at the elder woman.

"What about you sweetheart?" The woman asked giving her a once over.

Sadie ordered an unsweet tea and grilled cheese sandwich. Sadie didn't really like the way the waitress was looking at her, the waitress was eyeing her trying to figure out why she was with Bo. She looked at her short shorts with a sneer.

Sadie looked back at her and just smiled. She really didn't care what the waitress thought about her. Bo was nice enough and she was safe, that was a good start. The waitress returned with Bo's steaming coffee and her tea. Sadie stirred in two packets of pink sweetener.

"I know this stuff isn't any good for you, but my aunt and uncle used the stuff all the time and I got used to it." She offered with a shrug as she stirred her tea and then sipped some of the tea from her straw. She looked around the diner, everyone seemed to know Bo. The town was quiet and the people seemed nice enough. She doubted that Conner would ever come looking for her here. She rubbed her wrist unconsciously as she thought of Conner. His handprint was still fading from her skin.

"Thank you for the supplies and the lunch. I appreciate it. And I will earn my keep." She realized to someone overhearing that it might sound like she was being flirtatious. "I just mean, I mean, I will work hard. Organizing the office and keeping the books, and helping out with the animals." She bit her lip and then took another sip of tea. She fished a ponytail out of her pocket and put her hair up in a ponytail. With her hair off of her face she looked even younger than before.

She looked up at Bo as he drank his coffee. "How do you drink coffee when it is so hot outside?" She asked with a light laugh in her voice.

Bo laughed at her question and gestured at his coffee.

"My parents grew me up on it" he explained bringing it to his lips as taking a sip.

"Neither one of them could function without the brew" he explained "when they needed my help around the farm they would let me drink it as well. Some ornate my earliest memories are drinking a cup of coffee with my dad and mom"

Bo smiles at the memory just as the waitress came up with their food. He turned to thank her and then waited for the girl to start eating before partaking himself.

"I'm sure you'll do your best sweetheart" he said offering her a kind smile "just do what's asked and we will get along fine"

"The men should have a small little cabin set up for you" he told her in between bites "you'll move in there when we get back and start tomorrow okay?"

Sadie smiled. Her smile lit up her entire face.

"That sounds more than fair." She offered. She took a few more bites of her grilled cheese sandwich. "How many people work at the ranch?" She asked, wanting to be polite and make conversation, but also wanting to learn more about her environment.

She twirled a lock of her golden hair around her finger.

She watched Bo as he ate and drank. He seemed perfectly at ease.

WIth one last bite Bo finished her burger and tossed the remnants back onto his plate. He waited for her to finish and once she was stood up and fished a few bucks out of the pocket of his jeans.

"Next time your paying" He warned her with a chuckle as he threw the bills onto the table. He helped her out of her seat and escorted her back to his truck after saying good bye to everyone.

He opened the door for her like a gentleman and they began the long drive back to the ranch. The sun was just about setting when they finally pulled up. He once again helped her out opening the door for her before pointing at one of the houses on the property.

"That will be your bunk" He said smiling at her "Its modest but should work for you. Have any other questions for me?"

Sadie looked at the little frame house that he was pointing to. She thanked him again.

"I guess my only question is what time should I be ready to work, and where should I start in the morning. I want to be ready to roll when I am supposed to be."

She collected her things from the bed of the truck and put her duffle bag on her shoulder. She let herself in to the little house. It was simple but clean. She put her things in the dresser and folded back the covers on the bed.

Sadie kicked off her boots and set the alarm on the clock radio. Then she tuned into a country station and turned on some music.

She opened the curtains, to enjoy the sunset. Then she stretched out on the bed.
