The Music Thread

We have lots of threads about music with specific things... like.. post what you are listening to, or to post a song or dedication to someone.

I thought the board needed one where we could just talk about mucic in general.... whatever comes up.

What do you like? Hate? Who have you been to watch? What do you plan to buy? What sound system do you have? CDs? Vinyl?

What memories do you have of songs? Concerts?

What songs make you cry? Why? Which make your skin go to goosebumps? Which do you hate and switch the TV or radio off if they come on?

Anything is good. :)

Apologies if this has already been done. I did search and didn't find a general thread on music.

I hope people find music as uplifting, inspirational, emotional and downright interesting as I do.

Okay, okay, I admit it ~ I actually LIKE the Spice Girls.

Can't help it ~ reminds me of my free-wheeling youth. :D

BUT ~ I counteract it with a love of the Beatles and the Eagles.

I'm also a HUGE fan of cheesy 70's/80's music ~ ABBA, Cliff Richard, et. al. Really, the music is just upbeat.

I do like more recent stuff, but I think the list would take days.

I'm also a huge fan of jazz ~ Bill Evans, Joe Pass, Stanley Clarke, Chet Baker, and others. I thank DH for opening my ears to this kind of music.

Ummm .... well ... anyway .... that's me!

I think this is a great idea DB for a new thread..

One of my very first concerts that I went to was a Billy Joel concert when I was in my teens (quite a few years ago). I remember being in total awe of the crowd, the atmosphere, the sheer size of the stage. It was overwhelming. I was so hoarse by the end of the night, from screaming, singing along (thank god there were sooo many other people singing to drown me out.. LOL). And the most amazing thing, to me at that time anyway, was everyone pulling out the lighters, flicking them on, and seeing all these tiny flames flickering all over the arena. It was amazing.

I haven't been to nearly as many concerts as I would have like to, but that one will always be fondly remembered.

Thanks ladies.

Surely others have some sort of memories and likes/dislikes about music? :(

Ok, I like all sorts of music, but being a teenager growing up in the mid 80's I have a special affection for all kinds of crap 80's pop, you know the stuff, Stock Aitken Waterman produced. It's rubbish and I know it's rubbish but I love it

That's not to say I don't appreciate good music. My parents brought me up with a strong appreciation of 50's and 60's music (proper music as they told me :D ) and having kids now I listen to today's music all the time and appreciate that too.

I like classical music, not everything, just certain pieces. The Arrival of The Queen of Sheba is a personal favourite, I walked down the aisle to that rather than the traditional Bridal March.

Music evokes a lot of memories for me, good and bad. Everything that's happened in my life, I tend to associate with a piece of music. :)

Ok now that I have posted that.

I love all types of music...right from todays music to classical.

Many moons ago I used to play the Cello. and even past the auditions for the Basingstoke Youth Orchestra.
I have been given the gift to be able to play any musical instrument, I also play by ear as well as read it.

well, DB.... I wish you luck with this thread, but I would urge you not to hold your breath. I've started various music threads over my time here.... some were geared for specific things like most romantic song, etc., but I did start a concert thread once where people could talk about any great shows they've seen, etc. it died a quick and painful death.

I also like to feel that I've tried to encourage people that stop by "my thread" to talk about anything they want, including music, but a lot of the posts just seem to boil down to "hi".

for my first contribution to this thread, a post about one of my favorite bads, dada. I thought I had a better one buried in my thread somewhere but couldn't find it. this will have to do.
*********************************************************
**********************************************************

I've used up a lot of posts in various threads talking about one of my favorite bands, a trio from california called dada. to me, they're better than just about anything else out there, and I really believe that anyone that likes the beatles would really dig dada. they're kinda like the beatles with jimi hendrix on guiar.

why am I bringing them up again? because they're fuckin' awesome, that's why!

no, really... it's because I never really had any way to get people to check them out other than to say there are song clips on the store page of the band's website. that's changed, now.... now you can hear dada songs on streaming audio while you surf the site.

so, check 'em out. they can rock, they play some beautiful ballads, and the harmony vocals are just fantastic. if you do give them a listen, let me know what you think. well, unless you hated them. I'm the only one allowed to have negative thoughts in my thread. ;)

just go to dadatheband.com and click on "listen now". I think that's all it takes... I don't have a sound card so I can't even listen, but you can. hope ya dig it.

just a side note, if it matters to anyone... besides being awsome musicians the guys in the band seem to be truly great guys. I've seen them about 10 times now, and I've got to meet them every time. after the show in milwaukee a couple of months ago I was just standing there minding my own business and phil the drummer came up to me and said, "marty! how's it going? I was wondering if you were going to be able to make it." how many other bands remember their fans like that? especially an old fat guy like me... I'd expect it if I were a hot 20 year old chick that wanted to blow them or something.

phil also went way out of his way the next night in chicago to get an autographed drumstick for a friend of mine. these guys are real guys, and they play their fucking ass off whether they're playing for 1,000 people or 30 people. unfortunately I've seen and heard of them playing for 30 people or less too goddamn many times.

check 'em out.

good luck with the thread, DB.

Can a plastic guitar introduce you to new music?

I like many different types of music, most are terminally mainstream, but whilst playing Guitar Hero 2 I heard "Soy Bomb" by "Honest Bob and the Factory to dealer incentives" and was really hooked.

Good idea for a thread DB :rose:

I like all kinds of music other than some country and hardcore rap....

The first concert I went to when I was 7 or 8...drumroll please...

Shawn Cassidy

woohoo... I still remember his
skintight white pants and fabulous hair....

Last concert I went to and took my 11 year old son was Def Leppard/ Journey.

I love Def Leppard, they are my all time favorite band, and the coolest part was
watching my son rock out to all the songs he knew too!

Hey! I was only 7 when I went to see Shawn Cassidy.... ;)

I redeemed myself taking my son to the last concert.. of course he got flashed!
He will now tell you I'm the coolest mom ever

Music is very emotional to me... I associate songs with people and events and sometimes just hearing the opening notes of a song can make me cry... or smile...

I dislike much of the swill that people like Britney Spears put out... I didn't like her from the first song and I refuse to give it a chance!

Right now I'm loving some Fergie tho  ... her music is hitting home for me...
