i don't listen to the radio much, just when i'm in the car. lately i've been listening to this newish radio station in the bay area, 95.7 The Drive, and one of it's tag lines is "the music that made you you." it plays rock from the 60s and 70s, and i think it's pretty good except for the fact that they play too much van morrison.

but the tag line got me to wondering what exactly is the music that made me me. i grew up with the music of my parents, pretty much skipped over the music of the 80s, fell in love with nirvana and grunge, and hate a big portion of today's popular music. i like a little bit of almost every genre, but i'm mainly a rock listener. what would i have been like if i liked mainly classical? or mainly rap? an interesting thought.

so, what's the music that made you you?

When I had my band, The Rockers, I listened to a lot of that.

And Jem...she's truly outrageous, how could I not go with that? The Misfits too.

When I was really young, I was a HUGE Depeche Mode fan. Then I heard Fugazi and my life changed.

I grew up on disco. I knocked on wood, till my bell rang.

But I think that I have such a varied influencial background that I can't pinpoint a genre or era.

Floyd
The Dead
Dylan
Janis
Woody and Arlo
Jane's Addiction/Farell
Chet Atkins
Bach
Ravi Shankar

I can't keep going, my brain is dysfunctional tonight.

The music that made me me ...

Well I guess spanish music played a big part in my life, due to my back ground and surroundings.

I remember listening to my dad's records , our house would always have these beautiful bolleros playing through out the house. :)

But as I grew older , I did listen to English music , I listened to every thing from "heavy metal" to every day songs that could be heard on the radio.

But at the end it always goes back to spanish. :rose:

My mom played classical & show tunes when I was a kid.

The Classical was a good backround for later in life.
I listened to Led Zeppelin & ZZ Top in the 70's, & still do. Not a lot of it on local radio at that time.
I was exposed to a lot of pop in the 80's
Melissa Etheridge in the 90's, & still do.

These days I listen to NPR/Classical stations. I buy mostly electrical blues. I'm dumb enough to buy new Stevie Ray Vaughn collections as I notice them.

hmm the music that made me? well i guess i'd have to say it's: zeppelin, the beatles, queen, cream, ccr, yes, the hellecasters, roy orbison, the byrds, the beach boys, b.b. king, buddy guy, stevie ray vaughn, peter green, adn many many more.

i guess the real question is then that what did it make me?

The music that made me. Now that's a tough question.

I can remember the first two tapes I'd ever listened to, on my own. ZZ Top and AC/DC. That got me started. The music that makes me now....would have to be alot of the classic rock, which my stepfather introduced me to, and from there my love for music grew. It's grown to include all kinds, but it mainly centers around classic rock, metal, and classical. Those are the notes that have 'molded' my life, or helped me along the way.

Another classic rock chick checking in here :)

The music that made me and I still listen to is Zeppelin,Tom Petty, Lynard Skynard, Elvis Costello, Stones, Jethro Tull, Warren Zevon, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Foghat,Fleetwood Mac......on and on

I like newer rock when I can remember the names of them lol
Nirvana,GreenDay, STP, Guns n Roses, Buckcherry

I grew up listening to classical music, reggae, folk but then discovered an amazing pirate radio station that played all forms of dance music - I particularly got into jungle and gabba.

Iron Maiden got me started out, Later on Metallica.

Today its mostly modern hard rock like:

Limp Bizkit
Linkin Park
Disturbed

I guess that the ones that brought onto that path was Die Krupps.

the music what most inspired me was the glam rock of the 70s
the likes of marc bolan -t.rex and the sweet and last but not least early bowie

I was an original MTV generation...I loved the 80's music...unlike any other decade and hated by most. the talent certainly wasn't there...but the hair styles were.

who else could like Flock of Seagull..

Duran Duran made me.....classic 80's Brit pop.....fabulous

I grew up listening to big bands, fifties pop, show tunes, etc. Bob Dylan changed my life. I finally saw him, with The Band, January 1974, when I was a senior in high school.

The first record I ever bought on my own was "Hey Jude".

Growing up in the early 70's when Rock was king, was into Floyd, Yes, The Who, Tull, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, Springsteen, CSN. A little further on was Early Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, AC/DC, Skynrd, and ZZ Top before they became a pop band.

The music and the people that shared it is what has influenced me forever.

I had a cousin everyone thought was a freak ..He came to live with us because noone wanted him well after a couple of weeks I started to go down in the basement and listen to him listening to music ..Kiss was the only band for me at the time and that was about 1978..Anyway I started to hear this stuff coming from his speakers that blew me away and it was the Ramones and the Sex Pistols he wasnt a freak just a punk and thats what I turned into and dammit I still am at heart..:)

Mostly music from the 60's and 70's...some from the 80's and toss in some classical and some jazz. Hate anything country since that is all that was played at my house growing up...makes me cringe most of the time.

Lets start with

Pink Floyd
Kiss

Switch to CCR and Cream oh don't forget Skynard

Then through a twist in with Dvorak, Bethoven, and Vivaldi

Then lets add Weather Report, Miles Davis, and quite a few more Jazz artist

Top it off with a bit off Big Band

That about rounds it out. :D

Pink Floyd
King Crimson
Frank Zappa

They didn't just make music - they created magick. They opened my eyes.
