Raymond de St. Jean set his phaser to stun, but only because he didn't want to eliminate his options in dealing with the Federation bastards. The damned traitors had a lot of nerve, putting a price on his head and the heads of the rest of the Maquis. At least they were still defending the homes of Federation colonists in the DMZ between the Federation and the Cardassian Empire. That was more than the spineless Federation leaders and Starfleet were doing. One day, perhaps soon, he'd get his revenge on that element, too.

Recently, they had to put aside their differences to fight off the Dominion, but with the Cardassians throwing the Founders out, the common cause that they had with Starfleet was gone. Eddington and the other prominent Maquis leaders were dead, but a few had survived the war and these were coalescing and gaining new soldiers. St. Jean was the leader of these new Maquis.

It was appropriate perhaps. Not only was he French and the Maquis modeled on the French Resistance group of the same name, but he was a direct descendent of a former member of the legendary French underground during the Nazi occupation. Well, the Cardassians were very much like the Nazis in his mind, and the Federation was weak-willed like the Vichy.

Unlike his famous countryman, Captain Picard, Raymond had contempt for the Federation's policies and passivity. It was bad enough in the past, but when the Federation chose to appease the Cardassians for peace at any price, that was too far for St. Jean. Well, Raymond wouldn't sell out like that. If he had to kidnap and capture a leading Federation diplomat or officer, so much better. Especially if she was pretty, like this Australian ambassador.
