The Lyndon Johnson tapes: Richard Nixon's 'treason'

Declassified tapes of President Lyndon Johnson's telephone calls provide a fresh insight into his world. Among the revelations - he planned a dramatic entry into the 1968 Democratic Convention to re-join the presidential race. And he caught Richard Nixon sabotaging the Vietnam peace talks... but said nothing.

There have been several things written about Nixon's subversion of the Paris Peace Talks.

I am surprised by LBJ's consideration of "rescuing" the party, and 1968 election, by dropping in on the Chicago convention. In a word, absurd. One wonders how the protestors in the street would have reacted to that...Chicago may very well have exploded. Good decision on LBJ's part to stay away.

Nixon subverted Johnson's Vietnam negotiations to ensure his election...
Reagan subverted Carter's Iran negotiations to ensure his election...
Republicans sure seem to put self-interest above the needs of their country.

Our fearless leaders are all very flawed, just like everyone else. Nothing about Nixon surprises me but I think he died a lonely man full of regrets. LBJ was a natural politician who could pour on the bs. I'm for a permanent tradition of presidential recordings although that would probably go over like a lead balloon.

I think they both need a foot up their asses.

Because between 1968 and the war in 'Nam thousands of people died were wounded and mentally fucked up who did not have to be.

I hear you although Nam is not an isolated war where troops died and were injured.because of politics or political maneuvering.
