THE LUGGER by Donald Westlake
Its #6 outta 24 in the PARKER Series of sociopathic fun. Think Jack Palance. Westlake used Palance as the model for Parker.
The Story: An elderly crook appeals to Parker to travel to Nebraska and help him with a problem. Parker is suspicious of the appeal's authenticity but goes anyway. The old crook is already dead and the whole town and most of America want the fortune they believe the old bandit buried in his basement. The sheriff has records of all the capers the old man committed, and the take was a few dollars shy of 2 Million. All think Parker knows where the money is. He does.
Parker reminds me of Goerings protégé, Heydrich.
Westlake's genius was for mystery. He made mystery last from start to finish, and you cant see the end coming, ever. This book has a surprise ending, too. On the last page. One of the mystery writer groups awarded Westlake its Grand Master Award.
