The year was 1865, several months after the bloody battles of the American Civil War. The north had won over the south, and now scores of slaves were being freed. Some still not accepted in the north or the south, they began to migrate west. Jackson Owens was one that did could not find that peace. He was a solider in the Union army, and had been there when Lee surrendered to Grant. Yet still he did not want to stay. Despite their "good" intentions, he south was still quite racist against blacks, and the north wasn't much better. So taking what money he'd earned from the army, he headed west, along with many of the other homesteaders, to find himself a new home.
