THE LITTLE SISTER by Raymond Chandler 1947

Chandler remains the winner and champion of hard crime noir though the best copy his style. The reason, I think, is because the new guys season their efforts with political correctness. James Ellroy remains pure and pristine but the others are fulla girl and gay and negro heroes. None of which exist in real life. In Chandlers time negroes operated elevators, gays handled America's floral needs, and gals were stenographers and Hollywood whores. THE LITTLE SISTER is about Holluwood whores.

The story is about a cute clerk who travels to Los Angeles to find her long lost brother. She cries on Philip Marlowe's shoulder and he agrees to give her one afternoon's work. He doesn't find the lost brother but finds a few dead bodies. Beneath the toupee of one dead man Marlowe finds a photo negative of a popular star and her gangster lover.

The story is a colossal puzzle from start to finish. Marlowe does find the lost brother when the brother stabs Marlowe's neck with an icepick.
