THE LINCOLN PROJECT

A group of prominent Republicans — Steve Schmidt, George Conway, Rick Wilson and John Weaver — have formed what they dub the “Lincoln Project” to defeat President Trump and Trumpism. In a New York Times op-ed, they explain:

"Patriotism and the survival of our nation in the face of the crimes, corruption and corrosive nature of Donald Trump are a higher calling than mere politics. As Americans, we must stem the damage he and his followers are doing to the rule of law, the Constitution and the American character. . . . Over these next 11 months, our efforts will be dedicated to defeating President Trump and Trumpism at the ballot box and to elect those patriots who will hold the line."

That means working to defeat Trump and electing “congressional majorities that don’t enable or abet Mr. Trump’s violations of the Constitution, even if that means Democratic control of the Senate and an expanded Democratic majority in the House.”

Given Republicans’ slavish loyalty to Trump throughout the impeachment process, they are justified in concluding that the party is now as much of a problem as its leader. “Congressional Republicans have embraced and copied Mr. Trump’s cruelty and defended and even adopted his corruption,” they write. “Mr. Trump and his enablers have abandoned conservatism and longstanding Republican principles and replaced it with Trumpism, an empty faith led by a bogus prophet.”

A group of Republicans opposed to President Donald Trump is calling out one of his most reliable voting blocs: evangelical Christians.

The video by the Lincoln Project begins, appropriately, with a Biblical quote:
“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”

The video combines footage of some of Trump’s most outrageous and outright un-Christian comments with clips of evangelical leaders praising him.

“If this is the best American Christians can do, then God help us all,” the spot concludes:

There was a similar push in 2016 with "Women Against Trump", actually a Republican organisation, though their ads didn't mention it. I always thought they'd have gotten more traction if they HAD played up their partisan identification - without that, it was too easy for conservative women to just write it off as the feminism they already hate (even though it's benefitted them all enormously).

Either way, I say good for them this time. From a strategy point of view, I wonder does this mean there's some internal polling they've got their hands on that shows Trump damaging the brand in the long run?

The Republican Party is shrinking.

And while Trump can't take all of the blame for a shrinking Republican Party, certainly some of the blame rests on his shoulders. Trump has low approval numbers and has alienated large segments of the American electorate, including African American voters, Haitian-American voters, Latino voters, public school teachers, college professors, labor unions, diplomats, the intelligence community, the scientific community, the journalistic community and much more recently, America's soldiers and military officers.

If the Republicans want to continue on as a national political party, they're going to need broad-based appeal, and Trump's appeal is very narrow. Mostly he just pulls in white supremacists, xenophobes, anti-Semites, racists and misogynists.

That's not a great base for winning national elections.

That's true provided left of centre voters get out and vote, and that they vote for the Democratic nominee. Regrettably, too many of our allies are of the pure-as-the-driven-snow variety who will only vote for someone who checks all the boxes. I hope this four-year nightmare will shake some sense into them!

One of the most vulnerable Republicans in the U.S. Senate is coming under fire from members of his own party for failing to stand up to President Donald Trump.

The Lincoln Project released a blistering new attack ad this week that describes Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) as “just another Trump servant: weak, frightened, impotent.” The spot warns Gardner that he is heading for a humiliating defeat in November, with polls showing him behind potential Democratic challenger John Hickenlooper by double digits:

The ad also calls Gardner a “small man terrified of a political bully” and portrays him as protecting Trump out of fear of being on the wrong end of angry presidential tweets.

I saw where Rick has given up on the Republican Party although he is still registered as a Rep. So he can vote against Trump Twice.:D

The Trumpinistas have ruined the party for Rick. What if they formed a new Party say, the Lincoinistas(?) The Old Time Republican Religion! The Real Party of Lincoin!

If they rejected the TEA Party weirdos, Trumpinistas, and the Religious Right.

Say elected Steele as Secty?

It could work.:)

The Lincoln Project isn't the only Republican group that is opposing Trump.

Republicans for the Rule of Law is an anti-Trump Republican group that is spending $1 million to air two ads on “Fox & Friends” and “Lou Dobbs Tonight”.

The ads center on letting former national security adviser John Bolton testify. Bolton said earlier this month he would be willing to testify if subpoenaed.

One ad uses clips of House GOP members lamenting a lack of first-hand witnesses as part of the impeachment hearings.

“Now, John Bolton, a witness with first-hand information, has agreed to testify in the Senate trial,” the narrator of the ad says. “Senate Republicans, Americans deserve the truth. Let Bolton testify.”

The second ad similarly focuses on Bolton’s knowledge of the administration’s decision to withhold aid to Ukraine, the issue central to allegations of President Trump’s impeachment, urging senators to call the former official to testify.

In addition to the TV ads on the Fox shows, Republicans for the Rule of Law will promote the ads across digital platforms for the next two weeks in Utah, Arkansas, Maine, Tennessee, Colorado and Arizona.

Republicans Who Are Sick Of Trump's Lies

Republicans For The Rule Of Law is at it again and they sure nailed it with this ad. They put together a short compilation of GOP voters in different states saying they can’t vote for Donald Trump because he’s an awful leader. Then they bought air time on Fox News. This ad begins playing Tuesday. Maybe White House staffers should head for the bomb shelter now.

A new ad from a group of anti-Trump Republicans claims that the president prioritized his golfing hobby over his duty to protect the American public from the coronavirus pandemic.

After pointing out that the new coronavirus has so far killed three times as many Americans as the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the narrator of the ad challenges President Donald Trump’s claim that he was unable to adequately respond to the impending threat in January — when one of his own senior advisers, Peter Navarro, first sounded the alarm — because he was distracted by fighting impeachment.

“Where was Trump? He wasn’t distracted,” the narrator says of Trump. “He had plenty to do, like campaign rallies and golfing.”

The ad continues to describe events which should have raised red flags, including devastating outbreaks overseas in Europe.

“Trump played more golf and packed thousands of people together. Sounds safe,” the narrator says, before concluding that “Trump just didn’t care, and he still doesn’t. He was never distracted, and Americans have been paying attention.”

The ad was produced by The Lincoln Project, a group of anti-Trump Republicans co-founded by George Conway, the husband of White House counselor Kellyanne Conway. The conservative attorney has previously criticized leading Republicans for defending Trump’s handling of the pandemic, pointing out in The Washington Post last month that “the impeachment trial ended on Feb. 5.”

“In reality, it was over before it even started, thanks in large part to McConnell,” he wrote in March. “The only drama was about whether there’d be any witnesses — and that ended on Jan. 31, when the Senate voted not to hear testimony. That left plenty of time to deal with the virus.”

He continued, “Impeachment didn’t consume the government, and Trump managed to visit his Mar-a-Lago estate for rounds of golf on at least four occasions in January and February, after the coronavirus pandemic had already reached the U.S.”

Trump was impeached in December for allegedly abusing his presidential power and obstructing Congress after he withheld $391 million in military aid from Ukraine while pressuring the country to investigate his political rivals. The Senate acquitted Trump in a mostly party-line vote: All Republicans voted to acquit and all Democrats voted to convict on obstruction of Congress, while Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah broke from his party and joined Democrats in voting to convict on abuse of power.

In addition to downplaying the crisis in January, February and March, Trump disbanded a National Security Council pandemic panel praised by experts; advocated for major budget cuts to the Centers for Disease Control; and failed to provide Americans with accurate scientific information about the pandemic.

‘Mourning in America’: GOP group unleashes devastating ad that hits Trump for making US weaker, sicker and poorer.

The Lincoln Project has unleashed a devastating new ad that aims to be the mirror image of former President Ronald Reagan’s famous “Morning in America” ads.

The ad, which is titled “Mourning in America,” shreds Trump for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic fallout.

“Today, more than 60,000 Americans have died from the deadly virus Donald Trump ignored,” the ad begins. “With the economy in shambles, more than 26 million Americans are out of work — the worst economy in decades.”

The ad then continues to hammer away at the horrific toll that Trump’s handling of the crisis has had on Americans.

“Many are giving up hope,” it says. “Millions worry that a loved one won’t survive COVID-19. There’s mourning in America — and under the leadership of Donald Trump, our country is weaker, sicker, and poorer.”

I saw that ad this morning. While I realise it's not really in their wheelbase to advocate for Democrats (since they are still Republicans, just anti-Trump ones), I do think the ad would have been stronger if they'd offered some cause for hope if we elect the alternative. That kind of bleak outlook - no matter how accurate - is rarely if ever a winner politically. That's why Reagan and his "sunny optimism" were so popular even as he made everything so much worse for eight years.

Trump unloaded on them in four full tweets, saying nothing but that he won and they lost.

"The federal government is considering rolling back infection control requirements in
US nursing homes – even as ... residents and workers are overwhelmed by coronavirus."
At what point do we acknowledge that it seems like they're *trying* to kill people?

Ineffective, weak "Republicans" are mad.

If they take off their shawls and slippers they mean business!
