It was Hallowe'en. Lily had always loved the holiday - scary movies, decorations, and candy galore. But since coming to university, her enthusiasm had dampened just a little bit. Here, it was all about wearing a little as possible with the excuse of it being a costume, getting drunk, and getting laid.
Lily Masters probably could have been spending tonight sleeping with anyone she wanted. She was a gorgeous woman - petite, but curved, generously proportioned in all the right places. She had long, dark hair, matching dark eyes and a pair of lovely, pouting lips. And yet, she wasn't exactly popular for her looks. In large part, it was because she was quite a geek, and she dressed the part. While other women wore tiny t-shirts and even tinier shorts, Lily favoured looser clothes that did little but hide her figure. She didn't care - it was more comfortable. Either way, she wasn't into the party scene, preferring to stay home and watch a movie or read a book with her cat, Smithers.
She had one close friend, Lindsay, and the two of them were as different was two women could be. Lindsay was a consummate party girl. They'd been best friends since they were children, and were practically sisters, and Lindsay really wanted to show the world what Lily really looked like.
"Oh come on, just for a little while! I promise the party will be fun!"
Lily couldn't help the smile that crossed her face at her friend's begging. "When has that ever turned out to be true?"
"Pleeeeease!"
"...Fine."
And that was how Lily ended up at a house party, dressed in a skimpy little witch outfit, getting hit on by guys who didn't even recognize her. The very same people who teased her for her bookishness and shy nature were welcoming to her, offering her drinks and more, and she all found it vaguely insulting. They didn't care who she was. In fact, most of them didn't even like her, and yet, because of her body, they adored her.
She was bored, and Lindsay had gone off somewhere, so she didn't even like any of the people in the room with her. Giving up on the party, she simply headed outside for a walk "to clear her head" - that was what she told the guy who asked her where she was going. She didn't bother to mention that she didn't plan on coming back.
Several blocks from the party, things were quieting down. It was chilly out, especially given how late it was getting, and how little Lily was wearing. She was going to start heading home when she came around a corner and spotted a building she swore hadn't been there yesterday. The spot was usually just an empty lot, she was pretty sure... but today, there was a large, gothic-looking building in its place, the entrance flanked by two large stone lions. The whole entrance was done up in lovely but appropriately-creepy Hallowe'en decor, and she realized as she approached that it was a library.
Well, there was certainly no harm in taking shelter from the chilly breeze in a place like that. It was old, it smelled of old books, and it was exactly the kind of place she could simply lose herself in. Lily loved libraries in general, but this one? This one looked like it had come straight out of her dreams. Rows and rows of old, tightly packed books on sagging wooden shelves that reached up to the ceiling. Little hidden nooks with cozy fireplaces and cozier chairs for reading.
She wandered the rows of books, her mouth dropped open in an expression of shock and pleasure. How had she missed this place before? She'd live in a library like this if she could!
