I've always found it a bit curious, this obsession many of them have to take away people's right to own guns. Does anyone really believe for half a second they give a flying toss about "public safety"? So what's the real reason(s)?

I think it partially comes from their statist nature. At least theoretically, guns equal power. They want the government to have total power over everything. Hence, even if its only symbolic, private gun possession shows that the state doesn't have total power.

Maybe there's nothing in it except they feel embarassment that your country is among the most developed and privileged there is but the world tends to see it as gun fixated, gun crazy and clinging on to obsolete rights?

If Mao was correct, that all political power comes from the barrel of a gun, then if you control all the barrels, then you control all the political power.

What amazes me is how some of the most vociferous critics seem to know fuck-all about firearms.

Government power and potential fear of its citizens, is largely why other statist countries, including nearly all the other developed nations with their history of Social Democratic (liberal socialist) ideology as well as many third world countries restrict private arms possession.

In the US, however, there are also other reasons they hate gun rights that have much to do with the decades old liberal culture war. Guns are associated with the "old America" and its frontier freedoms, rugged individualism, personal responsibility and independence.

I thought it was the gun owners who were obsessed. Those who believe their 2nd amendment rights have priority over everything and everyone else.

Funny thing that, fundamental rights seem to have a way of taking priority over other things.

Guns are the ultimate excersize in libertarianism. They put the power to protect oneself in one's own hand, and that is threatening to statists. Total dependence in all sectors is crucial to their agenda.

It's their fear of guns and the knowledge that if they owned one, they would blow out their brains.

Probably because they live relatively safely and comfortably in a pretty gun free society and presumably don't need to know 'fucking anything' about them?

Are those the same frontier freedoms that required frontiersmen to give up their guns to the Sheriff upon entry into most frontier towns?

Blob, got news for you, we have the right to protect ourselves over here too! Thing is, there's about a one in a gazillion chance that you'll ever come up against someone packing over here in your entire lifetime.

Who feels the safest? You or me?

What politician said to take away everyone's guns?

All guns?

I need a link or you are as big of a retard as miles and koala are.

The army is huge and armed to the teeth. The people were barred from owning arms, and Mao killed, what, 20 million of them? Every genocide in the 20th century was preceded by a ban of firearms, to the tune of 100 million people, give or take.

Just sayin' . . . .

Oddly enough the founding fathers thought that to preserve the freedom of the people meant that the general public should be forever armed to keep the government from becoming a dictatorship.

They also noted that from time to time it would cost lives.

Fortunately our Government isn't that bad...yet.

Right. The fundamental God-given right to bear arms whenever and.whereever as specifically stated in the Bible and Constitution. Both were written by men to apparently be interpreted by fundamentalists as the situation, the goal or the fear fits.

Oops, I accidentally stumbled into a gun-loving, 2nd-amendment circle jerk.

My bad.

Or in the immortal words of the ATF upon learning of the death of three agents with weapons supplied by the ATF, " a little collateral damage is expected".

Speaking of watching movies.

Actually, i spent 3 months driving from California across to N. Carolina and went through 13 states and many old frontier towns including, yes, Tombstone.

And was motivated to buy a few books along the way.

It's not Hollywood, it's absolutely true from what I've seen and read.
