I knew The Spinners had a long history before their hit string in the 1970s, but I'd always assumed Philippé Wynne was the lead man who re-energized The Spinners into a hit powerhouse in the 1970s. That's what I'd read. Countless times.

His arrival no doubt aided their rise to the top of the charts in the 70s. He handled lead vocals on How Could I Let You Get Away, The Rubberband Man, and One of a Kind (Love Affair) (great song), in addition to being an important vocal component of the group when he sang background. Sadly, he died of a heart attack in 1984 after performing at Ivey's in Oakland.

However, Bobby Smith actually did lead vocals on I'll Be Around, Could It Be I'm Falling In Love, Games People Play and Then Came You (with Dionne Warwick).

So, I learned something today. And, happily, Bobby is still alive and performing...

Don't sweat it. You don't know their music.

(Well, you know it...but you don't know you know it.)

Passed away Saturday. He was 76.
