Welcome my friends so you've come to join the land of the sky have ye? Come to leave the trappings of the physical and float with us higher folk eh? Well the land of the sky don't take any one so here are a few things you'll be needing to know before you take the trip up.

The land of the sky is a place where the great minds retreated after the invention of the air balloon considered the pinnacle of steam powered technology. What was first a simple hot air balloon and whicker basket soon transformed into gleaming silver and bronze cities up in the sky. Of course there are ships as well ranging from small skippers to huge behemoths depending on who your lucky (or unlucky enough to run into).

Then there are the cities oh let me tell you about the cities glittering jewels high above the ground and founded by the best and brightest some our utopias where the artisans and inventors tinker away until their hearts content. Some cater to the rich offering the best luxuries one could ever hope to have. Then of course there are the ones where the adventurers stop in gearing up as they continue there search from El Dorado

You havent heard of El Dorado?! Where've you been mate? Living under a rock? El Dorado is the greatest treasure in the world or so the legend says. Belonging to the Mad King. When he was defeated it was said he took his castle to the sky carrying with him the greatest vault of treasure the world has ever seen. It is said that his treasure was so big it took ten of the largest air balloons this land has ever seen to get it off the ground. The other rebellious kings had not perfected steam engine yet and they were forced to watch as he floated away as if by magical means. Of course we now believe it was steam powered that allowed him to lift his huge castle of the ground.

But you never know eh?

Let's se what else is there to know? Oh be careful for birds as they can get mighty pesky when there air space is invaded. Roaming pirates and other unsavory characters have flocked up into the sky to search for the treasure so watch out, Ah and the golden rule!

Don't look down!

........................

So as you guys have probably figured out this is for my new little group role play I came up with (along with Gypsy girls help who if truth be told served as inspiration for this idea) this is the basic idea so far a rough draft of how i see things going. So please if your interested in joining us come in and chat while the treasure hunt will be a thing I encourage any one who is interested in having a life or story in this world to stop by and join up you dont have to be a pirate bandit or any thing to play all you have to do is have a love of steam punk and a healthy imagination!

Permission to come aboard? :p

Permission is always granted to you, Lily! You don't even have to ask! :cattail:

Mr. Bard, that's what we're here to hammer out! But I'll pass that discussion on to Mr. Silver!

thank you Gypsy!

Lily all my groups have an open door so yes of course you can come aboard

Brad as for character development nothing is set in stone I do want every one to know that you dont have to be the pirate rogueish character hunting for the treasure I would love to have this thing big enough that some people are in these floating cities going about their own adventures and what not

I don't know if any of you remember the series from the mid-90s, but there was a great Western/steampunk show called "The Adventures of Briscoe County, Jr." John Astin of "The Addams Family" fame played a recurring character named Professor Wickwire. I would love to play a character like him, or perhaps a steampunk McGyver. Or Artemus Gordon from the "The Wild Wild West." In other words, not necessarily the character who is in the thick of things, but a character other characters can come back to, either to deduct what an unknown device is, or perhaps come up with a device to "save the day."

you can totally have a character like that! I vaguely remember what your talking about with the adventure of biscoe county one but i definitely know the wild west Artemous Gordon I think a character like that would be a welcome addition and certainly needed in this sort of land and quest

Another interesting character for a steampunk civilization might be modeled on Professor George Challenger from "The Lost World" by Conan Doyle. I remember there being a TV series based on the book, though I can't remember whether it was good or bad.

I'm trying to wrap my head around a Kate Warne character. She was the first female Pinkerton detective, back in the US Civil War era. What year are we looking at anyway? And what's everybody's thoughts about Edison vs Tesla?

The year Iam not to worried about thats some thing we can all decide

a Kate Warne character would be fun! As would some version of the pinkertons

Edison and Telsa should totally both be there battling out ideas in the clouds

Well I would definitely like to join this little adventure. Of course as no one seems to be putting their hand up for the roguish adventurer I do believe I will do so. Not necessarily looking for the fabled city but if I found enough clues I might have a run at it.

I am more a guide to the far flung floating islands that have become 'lost' or uninhabited. I make a living charting them and salvaging things from them, sometimes selling them off, sometimes keeping them for myself.

I have several bolt holes on several uncharted islands and always work alone and a rusty looking skiff that can transport three or four people that is so much faster than she looks, and has a hell of a lot more firepower as well.

Plus I want dibs on the Tesla gun from warehouse 13.

Aussie Wolf is definitely the rogue.

And as far as Edison and Tesla are concerned, I actually see Edison remaining on the ground, and Tesla the inventor who is making the breakthroughs that keep the cloud cities floating and evolving. Edison, after all, electrocuted dogs in an attempt to discredit Tesla and AC electricity!

I am definitely leaning toward the Pinkerton detective. Got to see what my girl Lily goes with first, though! And we could make the year 1883. That's the year the Kama Sutra was translated by the explorer Richard Burton. Seems an appropriate date for a Sexual Role Playing thread! :)

oh the ripe time of the Victorian era, but that is also the year Krakatoa blew up so that could cause a lot of trouble for floating cities. Have to be careful with all that volcanic ash floating around.

Maybe Krakatoa blowing its top gives some clue to the explorers about where the mythical city of El Dorado really is? And how many floating cities are there? How mobile are they? If the skies are filled with floating cities, could a floating El Dorado stay hidden for long? Maybe Tesla helped create the American floating city, the British have one and Bismarck got one for the German Empire. Miguelito Loveless, James Moriarty and Prince Dakkur could all possibly build a small floating city. Maybe the remnants of the US Confederacy are operating their own floating city. Perhaps the Japanese have one as a result of the Meiji Restoration. And the US Robber Barons might have started one on their own, theoretically under US control, but really a bastion of capitalism in the sky.

Oh I didnt think there was going to be more than three or four I would imagine this technology on a big scale like that would be expensive so no many countries have done it yet

Hopefully I'm not intruding but thought I'd drop my thoughts and see how they fly here.(No pun intended)

After reading the OOC here and browsing a few images of the good lady GypsyGirl84.

My first thoughts are of some type of large ship that acts as a sexual parricide for the ones who can pay or are lucky enough to find it.
It stays hidden, either always traveling with clouds or can make it's own.
Most of the time it's invite only, but if one is lucky enough to stumble on it no matter who they are they will be offered the very best anyway.

And I don't have a lot of experience with Steampunk settings or know much about history(was never a subject I did well at in school)

But thought i would drop the idea in and see what your guys thoughts were.

The floating pleasure cities wouldn't necessarily have to be cities. They could be giant zeppelins. And perhaps throw in blackjack with the hookers. That's what Bender would do! :)

And they could have resupply towers in neutral countries that get a cut of the take for turning a blind eye to things.

And amchentai, if you're not comfortable in initially participating in the adventure in general, you could write as the proprietor of one of these pleasure mini-cities and watch how things develop, and then maybe jump in. Maybe there's a meeting that needs to take place in a floating Macau! :)
