Gyros, when done right, are a wonderful thing. There's a great shop here that is run by Lebanese brothers that make wonderful Gyros (and a lot of other great stuff).

Agreed. A nice chicken shawarma (sp?) is a beautiful thing as well. I wandered into one of those off brand gas station convenience stores one time and there was this brightly-lit exceedingly clean half of the store that was dedicated to Mediterranean food. The proprietor made me a chicken shawarma but insisted that I try his lentil soup as well and gave me a small sample cup of it. It was wonderfully complex and delicious. He beamed that I liked it. It wasn't that he was trying to sell it to me, I had already ordered, he was that proud of his food.

I can never remember exactly where that place is and every time I find it it is when I happened to be criss-crossing that general area at night when he us closed.I think it's around 67th Avenue and Cactus. I'm going to have to make a point of heading that way during the daytime sometime.

You are correct sir! When they mix in the beef or the pork (depending on the people making it) its to add some fat content. Plus, to take some of the gameyness from the lamb if it has any. But whatever, a great gyro is a great gyro! It's served as a street food in its countries of origin, so why wouldn't it be a street food here?

Don't be jelly, BobsDownSouth. You bought that used rental return car what two or three years ago from Hertz Donut?... Surely you don't have more than a year or two of payments left, right? Or was that what you were doing today trading it in on a new rental return car? You probably should break that cycle. Don't get another rental return until you fully paid off the last.

Sounds like you're out enjoying some fresh air in between those batches of envelopes that need to be stuffed on this great job of yours that you have during your peak earning years.

Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives had a piece on some of the best BBQ in the States. One was at a gas station.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean but there was this one place near where I worked about 25 years ago that had these deep frying pressure cookers behind the counter and they made fried chicken and wedge potatoes that they called JoJo's. I got the idea that it was probably something found elsewhere but I've never seen anything like it since.

The best way to find a place like that is look for any place where there isn't active trouble going on where you see more than one cop car parked. Cops are stuck in a given a graphical area and will always know by trial-and-error what the very best places to eat in that area are.

There's this Mexican food place in Arcadia (which is a very upscale, but deliberately down-market looking area of Phoenix. Big, irrigated lots with modest, 60s ranch style homes) that I have to try at some point. I've only heard about it from the locals . It has a name but no signage and has been that way for over 35 years.

Found it again. I was on 67th Avenue and I remembered this thread so I followed my nose and found it.

Chicken Shawarma over rice with a chickpeas, cucumber, and tomatoe salad. Pickles and tine green pimento stuffed olives. Side of lentil soup.
