The cave is dark, somewhere there is a dripping sound of water, the air is filled with an almost sterile odorless smell. In the center of the cave is a chair made out of skulls, bones and mortar, to the left of the cave is a huge pile of gold, silver, platinum, steel, bronze all types of metal and any type of stone. To the right of the cave is a massive forge, blacksmith tools adorn the walls and the forge burns with a white flame. In the shadows there is dark figures, seen but unseen, fallen foes, bound to the shadows and servants to Death. They are ready to step forward at the command of their master. This is the house of DeathsKnight, where he spends his hours of self admonishment.

I fly towards the new lounge area and hover outside the opening. I shift into my human form and walk inside.

Ave DeathsKnight. Looks like you created you own lounge area. How is everything going?

*a dark shape is busy beating a metal bar with a hammer, he looks over his shoulder*

Ave be Avellan13...Everything is screwed up. How is things on your side?

A black trail of smoke flies towards the Lair and delivers a message.

I`m not at your place anymore. I`m at the Outlook with everyone else right now. Your welcome to come to the Outlook if you want.

The trail of smoke withdraws.

*shrugs and goes on forming the metal into a blade, working carefully yet thoroughly*

It was a crappy birthday, spent it alone. The only thing I did do that was fun, was when I took my one friend out to have coffee with me at a restaurant.

And they say life is grand.

I did pop a card in the birthday thread so you were thought of :)

I am sorry to hear is was not good in your real world. :rose:

Thank you Yeisha, it is good to know that somewhere out there, I am thought of. Does make life a it more bearable

He truly enjoyed sitting next to the river, it was so quiet and peaceful, nobody to hassle or trouble him. When he came here he often just sat and took in the sights and sounds, forgetting about the troubles out in the world. He watched as the dragonflies flew past, settling on plants near the water, he watched as the water gently lapped at the bank a few inches from his feet. One peculiarly blue colored dragonfly came to sit on his fishing rod; he stared at the strange patterns on it, wondering where it came from, because he never saw one like it before. The sunlight hit the water just right and the reflections danced on the dragonfly's wings, after a few moments it flew away and he stared after it, he watched as some Uldo's with their round bodies and long stem like legs landed nearby and started to catch little water bugs as they walked in the shallow water, they peeked at him with birdlike curiosity and he tried to imitate their clicking sounds, they just stared at him, then went on to hunt for more bugs as they scurried along the riverbank in the shallow water. A slight tug on his line and with a deft movement he snapped a smallish Yellowtail out of its watery home. He quickly unhooked it and threw it back into the water, he placed bait on his hook again and flung the bait back into the water, he settled in again, listening to the wind whispering through the trees, carrying the scent of pine and wood smoke....the smell of wood smoke caught his attention where he sat next to the riverbed, he looked around curiously, but a light tugging on the line quickly recaptured his attention. A short few moments later he pulled out a beautiful Silverfish, it was huge, with silvery scales and black tips to its fins, Caldric quickly gutted the fish and placed it in his basket along with the other two fishes he already caught for the day.

“Now that is a beautiful fish”

He almost jumped into the water with fright at the voice which suddenly spoke behind him; he quickly looked behind him and stared in wonder at the person standing behind him. He's old, his hair and beard is snow white and his tanned face is wrinkled, but his eyes is friendly and sparkling, he wore brown ankle length boots, brown breeches, a white shirt embroidered with strange lions on the sleeve, he had a black walking stick and a brown deerskin jacket slung over his one shoulder, the jacket also had some strange patterns embroidered on it as well.

“T-Thank you sir”

“How much would you ask me for that nice, fat Silverfish you pulled out just now?”

He looked down at the basket and then with a smile he took the fish out of the basket, bounded up the slight incline and handed the fish to the man.

“You can have it sir, there is a lot more where that one came from”

The old man smiled as he took the freshly caught fish from Caldric

“There is not a lot of your kind young man, tell me how old are you now?”

“I'm turning ten next week”

The old man looked thoughtfully at him, and then smiled.

“Then I shall give you a birthday present”

Before Caldric could reply the old man ruffled around inside his cloak and drew out a pure silver ring on a silver chain. They both caught the rays of the morning sun and reflected brightly at Caldric

“There we go, that should go around your neck until you are old enough to wear it on your hand”

He slowly backed away

“Sir, surely I can't take that! It's expensive!”

“Come now young man, you gave me the best catch of your whole morning spent next to the cold river water; surely a trinket like this is enough payment for that”

He couldn't believe that it was happening, never would he have guessed that morning that when he sat down next to the water that he would meet another person, much less be offered such a treasure for a fish. As he stared at the silver ring, he found his hand reaching out to take the ring. It's warm in his hand like it was lying in the sun the whole day. He slipped the silver chain over his head and tucked the ring under his shirt, when he looked up the old man is gone. He looked around puzzled then with a shrug he went down to his fishing gear and sat down to cast his line into the water again, his strange meeting forgotten, until later the evening when he got undressed for bed. The silver ring caught his eye and he took it into his hand, feeling it's warmth again, he stared at it in wonder and when his older brother came into the room he turned away and quickly slipped on his nightgown.

The next morning was market day and Caldric got chased out of bed early by his older brother Danil. Caldric went over to the basin in the corner and splashed his face with the cool water to get himself awake, he quickly stripped off his nightgown and got into his clothing, when he opened the door, he could smell the frying pig meat and eggs and his stomach grumbled. He dashed down the stairs and made certain that his hair was reasonably tidy before he entered the kitchen, his father was busy getting up from his table and he looked at Caldric.

“Make it quick lazy bones, we have to load the cart”

Caldric nodded and took the plate offered by his mother, after his father has left she placed a steaming cup in front of him. It didn't smell like milk, it had a strong, rich aroma which Caldric haven't smelled for quite some time, he took a sip, it was slightly bitter with a hint of honey, he looked up at his mother and she smiled at him.

“Do you like it Caldric?”

Caldric nodded and took another sip

“What is it mother?”

She sat down at the bench next to him and looked off into the distance

“The people call it Brackal”

The name suddenly reminded Caldric where he smelled it before

“The Night Elf merchant drinks it! That is where I smelled it”

His mother smiled and quickly tidied his hair

“Yes, now get to eating your food Caldric, your father don't want to be late”

Caldric quickly finished his breakfast and the cup of Brackal, with a “Thank you mom” he quickly went outside and found his father and Danil already busy with loading the cart, he went over and started to help with the loading. When there was only three more baskets left to load Caldric headed for the stables to get the tethers to hitch the oxen. Before the break of dawn they were on their way to town, his father sitting on the driver's bench next to his brother and Caldric sat on the tailgate of the cart, swinging his feet as they trudged along the slightly muddy trail on their way to the main road. As the sun peeked over the hilltops they were within viewing distance of the main road, as they neared the farm gate, as the light started to light up the green grass and shadowy woods to the North and South of their land, they spotted riders coming from the woods to their left. Caldric quickly calculated that they had to be from town and judging from how tired their horses seemed they had to be out in the woods for almost a day. The riders intercepted them and their leader stopped next to his father as the rest of the troops drew a semicircle around them.

“Hail good farmer”

“Hail captain, what a fine day it is so far?”

He looked at the grim faced soldier as his eyes combed over their load

“No it's actually not a good day so far for us, we have an escaped prisoner who have been eluding us since yesterday, have you seen any strangers around?”

“No captain me and my oldest son have not, I'm not sure of my youngest as he was out fishing yesterday and he did not say anything to us”

The captain looked at him

“I only saw an old man yesterday”

“Did he wear brown breeches and a white shirt with a black walking stick?”

Caldric nodded

“He also had a brown jacket with him, a deer skin jacket”

“Very observant young man, not many people would know its deerskin, he's a travelling storyteller”

The captain turned his attention back to his father

“Where are you going with this load?”

“We are going to the market to deliver it to Renald“

The captain looked over at a soldier and he nodded, Caldric looked over at him and decided that it's not a soldier, the armour he wore was brand new and the “soldier” was too old to have been a new recruit.

“Please state your names so that the scribe can write it down”

“Sir I am Andrus Nortvald, this is my eldest son Danil Nortvald and that is my youngest son Caldric Nortvald”

Caldric looked at the scribe as he wrote down their names on a parchment, which he folded and placed in his saddle bag.

“Thank you for your time Andrus, if you see a stranger please do contact us”

With that the soldiers trudged off, heading towards the forests cluttering the far end of the land, Caldric quickly jumped off the tailgate and rushed past the cart to open the gate, his father and Danil was talking quietly among themselves as they passed him, he closed the gate again and ran after the cart. As he jumped onto the tailgate he could have swore he saw a man ducking away behind the trees, but it could also just have been one of the spotted deer which roamed the forests. The thought brought a smile to his face as he remembers that his father said he will get a bow when he turns ten. He reclined against the rough crates behind him and day dreamed about hunting a spotted deer with his brand new bow.

A different noise brought him from his daydreaming and he sat up. As he looked around he saw that they were nearing the town, satisfied that he knew where they were, his interest picked up about his surroundings, he watched riders on their horses, soldiers standing around haggling with merchants about food. He noticed that their neighbour’s wagon was following them and he happily waved at old Eubert, who waved back at him.

“Caldric look over there”

Caldric looked in the direction his brother was pointing and saw that far down the road a group of knights made their way towards town, they flew a banner. It was purple and a white Heron poised on it,

“It must be lord Heldron's men”

Caldric looked at his father

“Would it be that they are coming to help the soldiers search for that escaped man?”

Andrus shook his head

“Highly unlikely Caldric, I think Rangers will be of better use to the soldiers as they know how to track and they are also very good at finding people hiding in the woods”

Caldric looked one final time at the approaching knights and then looked at the town as they entered the town walls through the open gates. He saw a young faced guard and saluted him, the guard smiled and saluted back at him, Caldric laughed and looked at the houses as they passed them. A slight movement caught his eye and he turned his head to see a cloaked figure standing half hidden by the shadows in an alleyway, the figure quickly moved into the dark and Caldric started to wonder why his mind is playing these strange tricks on him on him, first the man figure in the woods and now a hooded, dark-clad figure in a dark alleyway. When they reached the market it was already bustling with activity, Caldric stayed with the cart as Andrus and Danil went to Renald to tell him that they have arrived. As Caldric looked around he could see black clad figures moving among the houses and started to realize that he did see the figure in the alleyway. He started to wonder about the reason that a detachment of knights would be coming here, the presence of the black-clad figures and the knights seemed connected, somewhere in the back of his mind something starter to form, but he just couldn't place his finger on it. He got interrupted from his train of thought as Renald’s helpers came out from the building, he started to help them offload the cart and placing the empty baskets back onto the cart. After Renald inspected and paid for the vegetables, Andrus came to Caldric and gave him a copper coin.

“We leave after the third hour, go and have a look around”

“Thank you father!”

Caldric bounded away, very happy with the copper coin his father gave him. He wandered through the market, looking at all the goods and food for sale. He stopped at the armourer and stood there staring at the most beautiful swords and shields, that he have ever seen, on display. The armourer noticed him and stood closer smiling down at him,

“Good day young sir and how may I help you?”

Caldric smiled back at him,

“I see you out done yourself again with these most beautiful swords master smith”

The black smith laughed and leaned on his arms,

“So young Caldric, still saving to buy your own sword?”

“Yes I am, look...”

Caldric held up the copper coin his father gave him

“I now have thirty six copper coins”

“My my, just three more and you will be able to buy yourself a dagger”

Caldric carefully placed the coin in his pocket and then looked to his left, just in time to see a black cladded figure disappearing around the corner of the building. He decided to take a chance and ask Lenird,

“Tell me Lenird have you been seeing black clad people moving around?”

The reaction was not one he was expecting, Lenird grabbed him by the shoulders and pulled him over the counter and placed him down inside. Lenird kneeled down on one knee,

“Caldric, don't talk about them where people can hear you, they are assassins and if they find that you have alerted people about their presence they will come for you. They are cold and heartless people and will kill you on a whim, I for one do not wish to see my favourite customer slaughtered by them”

Caldric looked at him with a confused expression,

“Assassins? Here? But why?”

“Nobody knows Caldric, but the villagers have decided to let them be and not look for trouble”

Caldric leaned towards Lenird and whispered,

“On the way here we saw a detachment of knights on their way here”

Lenird looked thoughtful for a while, then stood up,

“Most troubling news Caldric, well just look after yourself and do not breathe word of this to anybody”

Caldric nodded and looked around the inside of the shop, one sword in particular caught his attention and he walked closer to look at it. Suddenly the shadow behind the sword moved, Caldric squeaked in surprise as Lenird's wife stepped through the dividing curtain. She looked at Caldric with a bemused smile, and walked closer to ruffle his hair.

“Did I startle you Caldric?”

Caldric smiled up at her, she was one of the most beautiful women that he has ever seen and he heard that a lot of men are quite envious of Lenird. He could understand why, she was tall and slim, with brown, wavy hair, big brown eyes and always had a smile on her face when she met somebody. And judging from the food which she often gives Caldric, she's also a master cook, but according to Lenird her best talent was that she knew how to run his finances.

“Oh hello Cisandra, yes I was so fascinated by the sword, that the sudden movement gave me quite a shock”

Cisandra looked over at the sword he mentioned and frowned, she went closer and looked it over

“I could swear that this stand was empty this morning”

She turned to the front of the shop

“Lenird? Did you make this? I can't recall that you spent any time working on Black Ore”

Caldric have heard of Black Ore before, it's very rare and therefore very expensive, a sword of this size and detail would really fetch a very nice price, he was so deep in thought that he jumped with fright the second time that day when Lenird spoke directly behind him

“No I have not, that stand should be empty, and I’m still busy making the sword that should be there”

Lenird picked up the sword and thoughtfully looked at it, examining the hilt first. The hilt had three spheres and the butt end, they were highly polished and shone like silver, and the hand grip was bound with black dyed leather and formed a very comfortable grip. The cross guard was thick and clearly made to withstand high impact, it had swirling lines and the ends formed blades, Lenird touched the one point and it drew blood immediately, the hilt seemed to be part of the blade as the was no setting line, the hilt and the blade flowed perfectly into each other.. The blade itself was a dull black, but still had a high sheen to it, Lenird ran his fingers along the flat of the blade in wonder at the craftsmanship, also very careful not to touch the sharp edges.

“I can't make a sword like this even if I tried Cisandra, it's almost a legendary craftsmanship which made this sword”

Lenird hefted the sword testing the weight and frowned

“For a three foot blade this sword is extremely light, here Caldric, see if you can hold it”

Caldric took the sword from Lenird and was amazed that he could hold it upright in one hand, it still would not be easy to wield it properly, but he could hold it and he knew that the other swords of this length he definitely couldn't even lift up.

“Lenird how is that possible?”

Lenird gently took the sword from Caldric and placed it back on the stand

“Well I heard that there are ways to lighten materials but still keep the density, strength and flexibility intact”

While Lenird spoke Caldric noticed one of the shadows moving, then he realized that it's one of the assassins, but this man had some intricate patterns on his clothing, which somehow stood out to Caldric's eyes. The man had ice blue eyes and as Caldric looked into his eyes he felt a wave of curiosity overwhelm him. Lenird and Cisandra noticed that Caldric was looking at something and turned towards the assassin, he stayed in the shadows and somehow they did not see him. This baffled Caldric and he was even more baffled when Lenird asked what he was looking at, remembering Lenird's warning not to reveal the whereabouts of an assassin, he turned his attention back to them and grinned foolishly

“Sorry I was just thinking about how the sword got there and if the person is still around”

Lenird rubbed his chin as he thought about this, but Cisandra caught the slight hint and just smiled at Caldric, she reached out and tousled his hair

“When are you leaving? Maybe you have enough time for some bread, cheese and milk?”

Caldric beamed at her and Lenird laughed

“I think that Caldric will always have time for something to eat Cisandra, I'll head back to the front store and see if anybody wants to buy that broadsword from me”

Lenird headed back to the front and Cisandra headed towards the kitchen, Caldric looked at the sword for the last time and a whisper came to his ears

“Wise decision boy, when you see that sword again, it will either be your death or yours to keep”

Caldric looked back at the assassin still in the shadows and suddenly realized that he was alone in the room with him. Caldric made a hasty retreat to the kitchen where Cisandra was busy heating the bread on the oven plate and cutting off a huge chunk of cheese, as Caldric sat down he wondered what the words meant, but he also knew that he dare not ask Cisandra or Lenird. After a few moments he decided not to talk about it to anybody he knew, he did not wish to be the death of anybody. Cisandra placed down the bread, cheese and milk in front of him and tousled his hair again, Caldric smiled up at her and started to eat. Cisandra ventured back to the front of the shop, she pulled open the divider and Caldric watched as she went about dusting and cleaning the display, although for the live of him he couldn't understand why, because the displays sparkled already. As he finished up he could hear the church bell announcing the second hour, he jumped to his feet, almost falling over the chair as he stepped back. Cisandra was at his side in an instant, looking around and then looked at Caldric

“Is everything all right Caldric?”

He nodded

“Yes, my father said that they are leaving after the third hour and it's already the second hour, I must hurry if I still want to make it back to the gates in time”

Cisandra bent down and gave him a hug

“Then off you go Caldric and thank you for visiting”

Caldric grinned and bounded to the front of the shop, Lenird looked bemused at him.

“Oh you eat all my food and then you run away?”

Caldric looked shyly up at Lenird

“I uhm...”

‘I'm just joking Caldric, run along and maybe next time I'll have a big surprise for you”

Lenird winked slyly at Caldric and then shooed him out of the shop, Caldric shouted a good bye and then ran towards the gate, he avoided the market area which was crowded with people, and ran along the back ways and alleys. As he turned a corner he almost bumped into a group of black clad men talking among themselves, he shouted an out of breath sorry as he passed between them. He did not see them turning and staring after him, then one spoke

“Do you think he heard anything?”

“No I saw him enter the blacksmith's shop and according to the people I interrogated, he always spends his entire visit there, he most probably is late and is avoiding the crowded market area”

The men turned to their business again and moved the incident to the back of their minds. Meanwhile Caldric have reached the gate and stood there gasping for breath, the young guard noticed him and motioned him closer, Caldric walked closer and the guard smiled at him

“And who are you running from young one?”

Caldric swallowed and took a few deep breaths before he answered

“I am supposed to meet my father here just after the third hour and I did not wish to be late so I ran along the back ways and alleys”

The guard nodded his understanding, and then motioned Caldric to stand next to him

“So do you also aim to become a farmer like your father?”

“You can still remember me?”

The guard laughed softly

“A young man sitting on the tailgate of a cart loaded with vegetables who saluted me, it stuck in my head since that is the friendliest thing that anybody have done since I came here”

Caldric looked puzzled up at the guard who was busy scanning the crowd

“You don't have any friends?”

The guard shook his head

“I only arrived here a week ago, I'm still trying to settle in, but somehow people don't like me”

Caldric also looked at the people around them

“I know how you feel”

A silence came between them and then suddenly a thought struck Caldric

“Say, do you like fishing?”

The guard grinned

“I love fishing, I used to do it every weekend back home”

“Well why don't you come on over one day and then we can go to the river and catch some fish?”

“Now that is a very kind offer young one”

Caldric saw his father and brother coming towards the gate with the cart

“I wonder if it will be all right with your father”

The guard's words placed a bit of a damper on the thought for Caldric

“Well you could always ask him?”

“I think I'll do just that”

As the cart pulled up, Andrus arched his eyebrows at Caldric

“You're early”

He turned his attention to the young soldier

“I hope he didn't make a nuisance of himself”

The guard smiled

“No sir, in fact he was welcome company and he made me an offer which I would like to discuss with you”

Andrus furrowed his eyebrows together and looked at Caldric

“What was this offer?”

“He said that I can go fishing with him over the weekends seeing that I'm lonely and have no friends here in town”

Andrus almost looked relieved at this news

“Well you are welcome any time, Caldric does need some company and we are almost constantly busy in the fields so he also tends to become rather lonely. Come Caldric, we have a ways to go, you don't want mother to worry do you?”

Caldric climbed into the partly empty cart and as they pulled away the young guard gave him a small wave. Caldric waved back and then settled in against the sacks of flour his father had bought. He watched as the town grew smaller and smaller away as the cart trundled along, he started thinking about the sword he saw in Lenird's shop and got so engrossed in his thoughts that he only rouse from his thoughts when the cart moved to the side of the road, he got up and saw the detachment of knights passing them. One knight looked over at them and stopped his horse, three other knights stopped as well and followed him as he walked his horse over to the cart.

“Greetings sir”

Andrus bowed from his seated position

“Fair greetings to you lord”

The knight looked straight at Caldric when he spoke again

“How old is the lad? And where did you find him?”

Andrus peeked at Caldric, who was in turn inspecting the knight

“He is nine, he turns ten next week. He was borne from my wife, not found sir”

The knight stared at Caldric and the other knights inched closer, staring at him as well. Caldric refused to look down or away,

“You say he is your son farmer?”

Andrus frowned

“Yes sir, is there a problem?”

The one knight nudged his horse closer and they quietly spoke among themselves, all Caldric heard was the one saying, “Leave it at that Denzil”, the knight turned his attention back to Andrus

“No good farmer, no problem, sorry for the delay”

As they turned their horses away Denzil tossed Caldric a coin

“Keep that for three years and on your thirteenth birthday seek out the Aldrusian estate, I'll always have need for a good, strong squire”

With that they galloped off and Andrus got the oxen moving again. Danil turned to look after the knights,

“I wonder what that was about”

Andrus had a dark look on his face

“I wish I knew Danil, I wish I knew”

Caldric instantly knew that his father knew what it was all about, Danil grinned at Caldric and motioned with his head at the coin in Caldric's hand

“So what trinket did he give you?”

Caldric looked down and almost couldn't believe his eyes, the gold coin was etched with a Heron on one side and when he turned it over the other side showed five moons

“He gave me a five gold coin”

Danil guffawed and turned around

“Pity you can't use it, being a squire is everyone's dream isn't that so father?”

Andrus leaned back and placed one foot on the front wall

“Indeed, I can remember back when I had to talk Danil into helping me on the farm instead of chasing after horses with a wooden sword and shield”

Caldric inspected the gold coin and just couldn't fathom what made this coin any different from others, but he decided to keep it safe. He settled down again and started to think about what happened today, he got so engrossed in his thoughts that his father had to call his name to get his attention, he saw that they were at the gate to their farm. He jumped off the cart and ran to open the gate, as the cart passed him, Danil threw something at him, he caught it and gleefully stuck the sweet sugar candy in his mouth, and he sucked on it as they made their way to the farmhouse. When they arrived the sun was busy setting and he hopped off the cart

“Thank you Danil”

Danil got off and started to help unhitch the oxen

“It's a pleasure Caldric, I know that you're saving your money and I decided to treat my little brother for his persistence to get what he wants”

Caldric took the leather straps that Danil handed him and ran to the stables to hang them in the proper place. Andrus started helping Danil with unhitching the last ox

“Do you have any idea what he's saving for Danil?”

“Yes father, but he made me promise not to tell, he's afraid that it might upset you if you found out”

Andrus smiled slightly

“He is a very smart, but careful lad, it may serve him well later on, let's keep it between you and me that you told me. You know I was young and a very curious lad once as well, I'm not a lad anymore, but the curiosity remained and now I'm curious”

Danil handed the last of the leather straps to Caldric and waited until he was out of earshot

“He's saving for a sword, Lenird said that once Caldric has two gold coins, he will make him a sword”

“Two gold coins? That is not even cost price on a low grade sword Danil”

“Lenird and Caldric have become great friends, I think that somehow Lenird sees himself in Caldric when he was that age”

Aldrus helped Danil to chase the two oxen into the camp

“That is just too complicated for me”

After storing the cart and offloading the groceries, they carried everything into the house where Maril was busy cooking supper in a pot suspended over a hearth. After listening to Aldrich and Danil's stories about the market and having supper Caldric couldn't wait to get into bed, as he undressed, the silver ring once again caught his attention and when he touched it, it was still warm in his palm, warmer than his body heat could make it. He stored the gold coin with his copper coins and decided to at least take a bath before he got into bed. He snuck down to the bath and found that the water was still luke warm, just the way he liked it, he quickly stripped and got into the bath, he wet his body and started to lather up with the soap that his mother made, she always like to scent her soap with some herbs and these smelled like Lavender, he used some of it to wash his hair as well and while he was busy rinsing himself he noticed Danil standing in the doorway with a pot.

“So for a change you don't need to be told to wash?”

Caldric pulled a face at him and start to rinse the soap out of his hair

“Well I'm glad that you're starting to do this on your own, means my little brother is growing up”

Danil sat the pot on the stone slab close to the bath and sat down facing away from the bath

“Caldric did you see something strange today?”

The question brought flashes of all the strange happenings to the front of his mind and he peeked at Danil

“Yes I did Danil, why do you ask?”

Danil shrugged

“How many fittings were on that knight's armour?”

Caldric got out of the bath and started to dry himself with a fluffy cloth which his mother called a towel, he recalled the image to his mind's eye and quickly counted them

“Uhm I think 16?”

“And do you know what that means Caldric?”

Caldric pulled on his nightgown and combed his fingers through his wet hair, he slipped the chain around his neck and tucked it under his nightgown

“That he wore armour?”

Danil laughed and got up

“Yes little brother, something like that. Now run along, dad wants to take a bath”

Caldric went upstairs to the bedroom, wondering why Danil asked him all the strange questions. He shrugged it off as curiosity and got into bed, he lay on his back and counted the wooden planks above his head, he turned his head toward the window, scanning the outside. A slight movement caught his attention and he saw a person standing at the edge of the shed, he could hear his father bathing and his mother talking to Danil, so it was somebody who shouldn't be there. He was starting to grow alarmed when the person seemed to notice that he's been spotted and started to jog away towards the woods, he sat upright and stared after the person as he heard Danil coming up the stairs. Danil entered with a burning candle and started to light the other candle standing between their beds

“Really Caldric you got to start lighting a candle when you're in here, it's as dark as Kerd's armpit”

Caldric turned towards Danil, squinting at the sudden light and realized he can't actually say he saw a person outside because it's dark moon as well

“Uhm I'm sorry Danil, I'll try to remember next time”

Danil sighed and started to undress

“Yeah Yeah Caldric, I heard that before”

He yawned and sat down, unlacing his boots

“I wish I had sharp eyes like yours, would make my life much easier you know”

Caldric settled back into his bed and looked up at the roof

“I don't know Danil, sometimes it feels like I see things that other people don't see and I feel that if I tell them about it, they won't believe it”

“Let me guess, you saw something outside in that dark muck and you doubt that anybody would believe that you saw it”

Caldric nodded

“But it's more like someone than something”

Danil chuckled and got into bed

“Get some rest little brother, because if I'm not mistaken you're going to have a busy day tomorrow when that guard comes to fish with you”

Danil blew out the candles and settled into bed, Caldric watched him fall asleep and then turned on his side to face the window. He thought about the next day and some more fishing and with a smile he fell asleep.
