“They’ll be here in half an hour, Andrea. Do shift yourself, there’s a good girl. Make sure the cushions are all fluffed up, and that you haven’t dropped any crumbs. Then check the wine in the fridge is cool enough. Oh, and the nibbles need to go out now, I think. Then come upstairs and zip me up!”
Ugh! Andrea grimaced at the string of orders from her mother. She didn’t see why she had to do all the work, getting everything ready. It wasn’t her stupid Ladies Circle. The sooner they were here, the sooner she could go to her room and put on some loud music to drown out the boring grown up chatter downstairs.
The holidays were dragging, and Andrea half-missed her school friends, most being away doing exciting things, not stuck at home with Mom! But she was beginning to get tired of them.
Once the chores downstairs were done, Andrea climbed the stairs stomping on each one in non-vocal rebellion.
“Come and zip me up, darling,” her mother called. Now how did she know Andrea was already upstairs? Mrs Jeanette Kay was a petite brunette, very trim figure, modest bust, and she made the short red dress look gorgeous. She made everything she wore look gorgeous. Luckily Andrea seemed to have inherited most of her Mum’s genes. Nature is sometimes very kind. But where her mother was dressed elegantly, formally, Andrea was in the usual jeans and t shirt, yellow today, her long brunette hair in a neat ponytail, sandals on her feet.
Andrea mused that all the ladies in the Circle seemed to look good. Not good for their age, they really looked good. Perhaps that was the qualification for membership? Andrea had no idea what else they had in common. Last time she listened they were talking about all sorts of boring stuff.
Now zipped up, Mrs Kay turned to her daughter, kissed her forehead and patted her arm.
“You’re a good girl. I’m sorry the holiday has dragged for you, but its nearly New Year, you have a party to go to, and soon you’ll be with your friends again.”
Andrea rolled her eyes. Like that was going to make things any better!
“Come and help me settle everyone in, then you can come up to your room, ok sweetie?”
“Sure mum,” the teenager replied. She might grumble, protest and drag her feet, but she always did as she was told.
It wasn’t long before the guests started to arrive, and Andrea did her thing, being charming, offering white wine, taking coats.
Soon enough she was able to escape up to her room, where she immersed herself in music and the internet.
Downstairs, Jeanette Kay called the meeting to order, announced how much money was in the communal fund still, reminded everyone of the Social Calendar, and then opened the meeting up for the exciting part.
“Now, its Challenge your Neighbour time. Lets hear how everyone did with their last challenges and set some new ones. Who’d like to go first?”
There followed the decidedly juicy accounts of various daring exploits, the ladies reliving the thrills and arousals in the retelling, and after they were all done reporting back, they took a break.
In the small talk that followed, one of the ladies complimented Jeanette on how well her daughter had turned out, so charming this afternoon.
“Yes, she can be, can’t she? But she’s not been herself this holidays, not really enjoyed them, and doesn’t seem to eager to get back to her friends. I think she needs something new in her life,” then after a thoughtful pause, “or someone?”
She looked round the room, and had everyone’s attention. There were some smiles already playing on some ladies faces as they anticipated what might be coming next.
“I’m pretty sure Andrea is straight, but then she does take mostly after me, so maybe not completely straight,” and she grinned while they all exchanged knowing looks. “Is anyone up for the challenge of finding out?”
