Please use this thread to wax lyrical about great things related to L Word music. Like everything else about the show, the music is fantastic.

Here's the question: Season 2, Episode 9 - It ends with a song that has some of the most beautiful guitar I've ever heard accompanied by wistful, evocative vocals. The credits only say "music by EZ Girl, main theme by Betty." Does that mean this particular song is by EZ Girl? Can someone identify this song? I'm captivated.

Thanks,

Roxanne

PS. This is the episode where Bette and Tina start getting back together, Carmen confesses her love for Shane, and it ends with Dana embarrased as she comes out of the bathroom wearing a strap-on for Alice.

Remember the episode but not the song. Sorry Roxanne I can't help, the repeats aren't due on for ages!!!

Thanks, Blue Fox.

Actually I'm watching the series for the first time on DVDs from Netflix. Sometime I should post my reacitions - needless to say it's powerful stuff.

It is either "No other love" by Heart or "Naked As We Came"by Iron & Wine. I do not have the dvd's with me right now, but I know the sound track off by heart.

(i have it if you are interested, Roxanne) :rose:

Hi, Nirvana!
The lyrics are really hard to pick out. There is one line you may recognize - "other people (something something) see the beauty that I saw." It is a single woman's voice, she kind of slurs a lot of the words in a soulful way. The song is cued while Bette is hanging a beautiful glass mobile in the nursery she hopes someday will be Tina's, continues as Dana is preparing her "fashion show" with a strap-on (I had not imagined that a scene with a strap on could be both beautiful and touching), and continues over the closing credits.

I am haunted by it! (In the good way.) Replayed the scene many times to get the song firmly stuck in my mind.

I will probably have to get the sountrack some time.

Try this one... it might be it

Jane Siberry: Love Is Everything

Maybe it was to learn how to love
Maybe it was to learn how to leave
Maybe it was for the games we played
Maybe it was to learn how to choose
Maybe it was to learn how to lose
Maybe it was for the love we made

Love is everything they said it would be
Love made sweet and sad the same
But love forgot to make me too blind to see
You're chickening out aren't you?
You're bangin' on the beach like an old tin drum
I cant wait 'til you make
The whole kingdom come
So I'm leaving

Maybe it was to learn how to fight
Maybe it was for the lesson in pride
Maybe it was the cowboys' ways
Maybe it was to learn not to lie
Maybe it was to learn how to cry
Maybe it was for the love we made

Love is everything they said it would be
Love did not hold back the reins
But love forgot to make me too blind to see
You're chickening out aren't you?
You're bangin' on the beach like an old tin drum
I cant wait 'til you make
The whole kingdom come
So I'm leaving

First he turns to you
Then he turns to her
So you try to hurt him back
But it breaks your body down
So you try to love bigger
Bigger still
But it...it's too late

So take a lesson from the strangeness you feel
And know you'll never be the same
And find it in your heart to kneel down and say
I gave my love didn't I?
And I gave it big...sometimes
And I gave it in my own sweet time
I'm just leaving

Love is everything...

I discovered it part way through series one (I think). Either that or I saw the repeats from series one!! I really must get the DVDs, I would like to watch certain parts over and over again.

Definately time to change my sig line.....

I know what you mean. That sequence I described in post No. 5 above was really beautiful. It's not a big dramatic event or anything, just a pair of very touching tableaus crafted with such incredible artistry and talent that it sends shivers down my spine.

PS. I posted this on "The L Word" thread:

The talent involved in every aspect of this program - actors, writers, directors, music director, musicians - is unbelievably huge. I suspect that applies to any cutting edge product created by the mainstream U.S. film and tv industry. Makes me kind of proud to be an American, actually. (Not to suggest that equal talent does not exist elsewhere, but we do seem to have a knack for effectively assembling it to create wonderful things.)

As a creative person I am humbled by the talent displayed. I makes me appreciate the Scaglierri character in the movie Amadeus, a composer who when he heard Mozart's music knew himself to be just a hack, and realized that he could never aspire anything even remotely comparable. (Don't worry - I'm not going to try to knock off any of the L-Word writers!)

Here's another L Word music question - "Comme si, Comme sa"

Hey Nirvana (or anyone else), what's that funky "comme si, comme sa" song that I heard on there maybe more than once? Out of the blue I've had that one stuck in my head for a couple days - it's a fun song. :cathappy:

Thanks,

Roxanne

I have no earthly idea... Season?

Oh! I thought that you would smile and just blurt that one out!

Well, probably season 2 because that's what I've been working through on my netflix dvds.

It may me from one of those slightly surreal introduction scnenes. It has a French 'atmosphere' to it but I don't recall if the body of the lyrics are in French. (Actually I don't remember anything about the lyrics except for that catchy refrain:

Something, something comme ci ca,
something, something comme ci ci,
comme ci ca, comme ci ci
something something comme ci ci
comme ci ca, comme ci ci
something.

Note from Holly Miranda of "The Jealous Girlfriends"

Something I learned from being a writer here on Lit is never hesitate to tell an artist how much you appreciate what he or she created, and never underestimate how much doing so may be appreciated by the artist. So I sent a note to the creator of the song that inspired this thread, Ms. Holly Miranda, telling her what I had posted above, and that she must be very proud to have created something very wonderful. Ms. Miranda graciously responded with the note below, which I post here so others can appreciate her graciousness, and learn about her new works.

Re: Haunted by "Lay Around"

Wow Roxanne - Thank you so much for the kind words and for helping to promote and spread the word. I am extremely proud of that song and record. There were a lot of amazing musicians who worked really hard on that.

My band, The Jealous Girlfriends, have a new album that we just finished (myspace.com/thejealousgirlfriends).

I also have solo music that I make in my little apt in Brooklyn (myspace.com/ravenmayhem).

Check it out and let me know what you think, I hope this finds you well.

xoxo

Holly

Roxanne again: Here is a two minute clip from "Lay Around" that Nirvana sent me. (It is posted elsewhere on the Internet, so I don't think we're stealing.)

Are they still using Betty in pretty much every episode? Do they still have that awful theme song? Does anybody actually like that theme song?

If you are referring to the theme song used in season 2, I do not like it, and think it is out of kilter with the spirit of the show. One of the advantages of watching on dvd is fast-forward!

I have not seen any of season three.

I actually like The L Word and rented Season 1 months ago. I'm glad this was posted because I just added the 4 DVDs of Season 2 to my Netflix queue. :) Hopefully I can start watching them this week.
