Written in sad commiseration at the death of Australian hubris at the Oval, September 12th 2005. The body will be cremated and the Ashes taken back to Australia.

PS. I'm allowed one gloat. I've been waiting for this ever since I first started watching cricket and the Aussies have been shoving it down our throats since 1987.

Oops, I nearly forgot the most important one:

Ashely Giles - "If any of our batsmen get out to Ashley Giles, then they should hang themselves" - Took the wicket of every single one of the Australian top 7 batsmen. We'll provide the rope!

That's the King of Spain.

Explanation: Ashley Giles has often been ridiculed by the cricketing public. He's in a niche position (Spinner) in the England team for which he has very little competition, so he's in very little danger of being dropped, but he's nowhere near the best in the world at that position. For a short while, he was downright terrible and was remembered by one cricket fan asking a phone-in "What is the point of Ashley Giles?"

Over the last year or two, he's really improved, despite getting on in years (in cricketing terms) and has become a very useful player. Still not world-class, but his application and work has turned a small amount of talent into a good international player. I think he's brilliant because of this.

When he was in the doldrums, the English Cricket Board ordered a batch load of promotional mugs with "Ashley Giles, King of Spin" on them, which was a ridiculous statement to try and make. Unfortunately, due to an error at the printers, they ended up with a load of mugsthat read "Ashley Giles, King of Spain." There were many many jokes about it being more likely that he'd find a distant relative that entitled him to the Spanish throne than become a world-class spinner.

Since then, as I said, he has worked his arse off and is now a very good spinner, even if not King of Spin. The England fans have taken him to their hearts for his workmanship and durability under heavy criticism and the "King of Spain" nickname has stuck, becoming an affectionate nickname, with Spanish flags being seen in the crowds withthe words "Gilo is our King" written on them.

Today, he scored 58 runs (a not insignificant total) and has taken vital wickets throughout the test match series, despite a former Australian player's quip that "if any of our top batsmen gets out to Ashley Giles, then they should hang themselves."

A true hero.

Me too.

I'm still grinning at the pictures of the victorious open top bus ride through London, the huge crowds that came out to cheer them.......AND THE WOMEN'S TEAM WHO HAD ALSO BEATEN AUSTRALIA............and the huge gathering and accolade in Trafalgar Square.

England cricket has seen nothing like this. Long may it last.

Grats guys...one of the wonderful things about sports is the way the glory can feel so shared...

brilliant.....

To see the game so popular and revived so spectaculary. Good hardy sportsman of the best calibre all round with non of the knuckle dragging intellect so often shown by footballers.

To beat the Aussies, quite something! and to those of you down under thats a compliment by the way. :nana:

And Freddie Flintoff who was quite blatantly still pissed.

Have a cookie and a diet Coke, sweetness. I think I get it. The ashes go home to the Aussies, eh? Nicely done. :rose:

Zoe says, “Ruff. Ruff, ruff, ruff … “ Though, that could be because I just rolled over her tail. She scampered away after that testament to cricket. ;)
