Open for anyone. Male and Female characters are welcome. Most fantasy races that are humanoid, although in this world there is no magic. You can be resourceful, but there is no fire casting, no enchanted healing and no shape shifting or teleportation. To name but a few.

What type of crew member are you?

------------------------------

The ocean was a perilous environment, especially along the trading route at the southern point of Turan. A large jungle continent that stretched as far north as it did south across the central equator of the earth. To the south the seas were torrents, the plates of the world having sprouted forth many islands and volcanoes. Littering the region with currents that were as unpredictable as the creatures that inhabited the region. For the majority of the year the slow migration of cargo ships were left unbothered by many of the odd and dangerous creatures. Most of these ocean dwelling beings were isolated by the cold, and had to remain in hibernation deep under the sea in domed cities. The cities had been created thousands of years ago from the mining and agricultural growth of coral fields. Over time, the weave of coral became watertight, only letting small amounts through. This allowed for the creation for the large underwater coral dome know to the Hyanis people as 'Utaru's Sanctuary'.

Utaru was the name for what humans called that Kraken, which remained subdued until ordered to attack. Usually only when the long standing pact had been broken, which was for humans and other land based species to remain out of Hyanis territory. Occasionally some adventuring party, or trade company would try and sample the waters and underwater world that was so foreign to them. And every time they found their ship sunk, and themselves prisoners in the underwater city. Slaves for the rest of their lives. The Utaru didn't eat all those who were thrown into the waves. Only the majority.

The Hyanis people were an odd race. Humanoid in appearance, but distinctly aquatic. They walked on legs, but each foot was webbed. Their hands also shared this commonality, and they were often shorter on average than most humans due to the underwater pressures. Short but by no means stocky. Standing between 5'2" and 5'6", and having lean and thin bodies, it wasn't common to see anyone over 140 pounds. Large black or dark green eyes startled most, with double eyelids creating a rather alien appearance. And the sides of their necks were slitted, gills being their primary way of breathing. Their mouths were filled with sharp grinding teeth, with on the front couple of teeth capable of tearing on flesh.

The most odd physical attribute was by far the mass of independent tentacles that both the males and females had sprouting from their backs.

For 11 months out of the year, the Hyanis are confined to their city. Deep below the current depths of humanities reach. Here they live in relative peace, although there is talk of civil unrest. Why, as such a powerful race of warriors should they give up the coastal waters, the river inlets and the inland lakes to the humans. They should keep those, and dominate all water territories. But the elders made the pact with the human elders many years ago, and whilst those old Hyani still live, the pact stands.

So the blood lust is simply sated when the Kraken is told to wake from its slumber, and to defeat the humans unlucky or dumb enough to enter forbidden waters.

It doesn't help that most ships don't know they have moved into forbidden waters. Today is a world of commerce, diplomacy. Today the flotillas rule the ocean waves, and men battle piracy in the warmer regions. And man believe that when the Kraken attacks, its by accident, or some run of bad luck. It's only when those captured are delivered into the Coral City, that they learn why this happened. But there is no rescue or release for those who find themselves in the city. Only a life of servitude for defying the old laws, for breaking the pact between Man and the Hyanis.

For one month, the waters are at their very warmest and the Hyanis can swim to the surface and travel on the land. Sometimes they will take a mate, and drag them to the depths, not unlike the more hostile mermaids of folk law. But this is not to mate and devour, it is simply to mate and enslave. The Hyanis do not carry the young themselves, instead they impregnate a human host, who incubate the eggs until they are large enough. It is a painful process, having these eggs removed, and more often than not the human doesn't survive. The digestive system proving the best climate for the eggs, which repel the acidic environment. However, only males spawn from this habitat. Females are required to incubate inside a womb, at a different temperature. But women usually survive the birthing, and are impregnated again.

The gestation period in one week. And eggs which are less than a fingernail in size to begin with, grow as large as oranges in that time. The eggs are then released into 'mothering' pools, until the young eat their way free of the hard casings. There they will continue to grow, beginning the next stage of life.

((Just imagine a Hyanis instead of the human))

Today a ship floats on the waves, the wind bringing them much further south than expected. And within days of crossing the invisible line that separated the two races territories a large underwater signal is sent out. And from the depths the water bubbles, and upwards the mighty beast swims, and soon any sailor looking overboard would smell the stench. And the waters would turn black with ebony ink.

Then they would have to battle the huge tentacles which were strong enough to tear masts apart like chopsticks, and smaller ones capable of lifting men off the deck and tossing them far out into the sea. Too far away to swim back to the ship.

The Kraken is beginning its attack now, as you pass by the small island lookout of Manuta. In the center of the Hyanis territory.

Utaru's Sanctuary was boiling over with anticipation as the Kraken rose from the depths to begin its destruction and harvest of unlucky souls. The Hyanis required more incubators, and many of the slaves had grown old and frail and had been sent off. Where, nobody really cared. Perhaps they were simply pushed out into the ocean to collapse under the pressure.

The beast rose up, and tentacles slithered up onto the deck. The fight was intense as rifles and pistols blew chunks of flesh from the creature. But still, even with cutlass and sword slashing, it crept up and coiled the masts. And with a wood splitting howl the masts snapped, falling off into the water as the large tentacles retreated back into the waves. It was then that the smaller ones lept up, snatching men and women off all sides of the ship. Anybody who jumped would be dragged down into the Krakens mouth quickly by more tentacles. And soon the ship lay burning from upturned oil lamps. The masts sinking to the bottom, and the ship taking on water. No man was left on the suface that was alive, and silence fell on the ocean.

It would swallow them whole, or in pieces if it was hungry before returning to the depths. An odd occurrence happened on the way down, and the prisoners adjusted to the pressure of the depths, whilst the Kraken kept a nice environment inside its gut. It was only once it settled on the bottom of the ocean and moved through the barrier that held back the immeasurable water, that it regurgitated those that were living inside. It was a rather disturbing and horrifying process to go through, and one would become covered in a hot thick syrup of orange digestive juices.

Thrown up, they land into a pool. The warm water was surprising at first, considering the depth they were at. One would have expected arctic cold waters. Half drowning, and spluttering they would be left to wash in the churning froth and small waves. And then the Hyanis would dive in and bring them out of the water. Where they would be allowed a short reprieve to recover.

Surrounding them, one hundred warrior Hyanis dressed in battle clothing stood like a living wall to keep them together. And three distinctively different beings stood in ceremonial robes, their tentacles laying vertically downwards like some cloak across their shoulders and back. The others had theirs presented, like fans behind their heads.

"You have broken an age old truce between our race and your own. For this, you have been imprisoned. You will no longer be more than slaves, or you can choose death if you wish. Although we will strongly request you reconsider. It is a slow and painful process to be digested inside the Utaru, and takes days to decompose flesh and bones."

A lean Elf stood with his hands of the wooden railing, staring out at the choppy waters and gray sky. Most of his people would have been thinking about the power of the sea or the beauty of the dismal sky, but Erlind differed from his people in that respect. The mists of the past fascinated Erlind Kendor, and he was on this ship chasing a people who had vanished from mortal sight, but he believed might still exist.

Erlind was glad to have his sandy hair bound back in a neat braid that just touched his back, as the winds picked up. It was the right time of year, and the conditions matched those in the journal that had just come into his possession. It told of a “sea monster” attack, but Erlind knew what it really had been, the Kraken. A legendary beast controlled by Hyanis. He didn’t expect to find them, not really, but he hoped there would be some clues to what had happened to them at the next port.

As he pondered what part of the puzzle would come next, a rushing shadow beneath the water caught Erlind’s eye. Before he could react, the first of several massive tentacles burst out of the water. The very thing that had started this journey for him was upon them. Immediately, his mind rushed through the tactics that had worked and hadn’t against the beast according to the journal, but he stopped. The Kraken was the most direct link he could have asked for to the Hyanis. Among the chaos and screaming Erlind made a decision. If the beast was controlled by this ancient race, they would not set it upon ships without reason. Instead of trying to stop the devestation, Erlind climbed the railing and dove over the side, leaving the rest of the crew and passengers to whatever fate might find for them.

The elf did not look back at the few sailors that had retained their senses and tried to defend the ship, partly out of the small guilt he felt and partly out of single mindedness about his new goal, survival. If he could survive the answers would come. The salt water stung his eyes and he struggled to stay afloat in the tumultuous waters, but he was now driven with a purpose.

Suddenly, something cold and slimy wrapped around his leg. Erlind knew if his gamble was right he needed to submit, but he panicked and struggled against it anyway. It was stronger than any man and the pressure threatened to shatter the bones in his leg. He drew the dagger from the sheath hidden under his cloak. It was the only thing of his family’s he’d taken with him. The ten inch blade was mostly ceremonial, but Erlind had found it more than held up when he needed it. He felt the death grip on his leg loosen as he buried his weapon into the tentacle that held him. Still, it did no good, as the grip had loosened, but the beast now drug him down into the cold depths. Ripping the blade back Erlind clutched it close and closed his eyes. There was nothing to do now, but hope he hadn’t been wrong.

Erlind had passed out sometime shortly after being pulled underwater and he found he was glad he had. He was somewhere solid now, but a thick slime was covering him and he had woken floating in a shallow pond. The elf dropped his blade and began hacking up some mixture of the seawater and the gunk that covered him. He felt disgusting, but was alive. When he looked up a sense of awe filled him, he had found them, or rather they had found him.
It was then one of the Hyanis had stated their ultimatum, death or slavery. Erlind was certain this was some mistake, the most their ship could have done was pass near them. The sopping wet bedraggled elf fished his dagger back out of the water and brought himself up on one knee. Trying not to look too pathetic, he held it out peacefully and cleared his throat before addressing the alien creatures.

“We meant no offense, noble ones. Even so, I would never disrespect you by denying it has happened. I will pay the incurred debt any way I can, but I cannot be a slave to anyone or anything. It is not in my nature.” Feeling the intense stare of the strangely beautiful creatures on him Erlind bowed his head and hoped they would not take it as a request for death.

During the first few days of their voyage, Linny considered herself to be on the bright side of life. As a young handmaiden in service to a noble old lady, her dutys had been far from exciting, but also far from the dirty and hard labour of the poor peasants she lived with as a child. Travelling by ship to see the marvels of the far-away world had always been nothing more than a dream to her and now, this dream had come true - only to become a nightmare. Linny had always stayed away from rivers or ponds near her home, since she never learned how to swim and she had seen a drowned man as a child. So getting tossed overboard in to the waves was the first horror to begin with. When the Kraken swallowed her she had been close to drowning, passed out and never knew about her time inside the beast. She regained consciousness coughing and spewing, feeling wet and dizzy when the Hyanis took her from the warm water of the pool. Awed by the sight of such strange people her mind only catches a few phrases. "Death, slow and painful." She immediately knew that she didn´t want THAT, so without knowing about the consequences, she said: "I do as you wish, but please, don´t kill me."
- immediately regretting that she spoke without being asked to do so, even worse, interrupting the speech of someone above her standing.
Linny coughed again, muttered a cowed "sorry" and fell silent, eyes to the ground.

One by one the waters brought the survivors back to consciousness, and many were submissive when presented with the warriors and unusual situation they found themselves in. Submissive out of fear, not out of understanding. Two very different emotions to the people of Utaru's Sanctuary, one showed ignorance, the other showed acceptance. And as each survivor was plucked from the frothy waves of the pool, they were placed on their knees if they had enough strength to do so. Or if they were still too weak to stand, or had been wounded, then they were left to lay on the ground.

One of the survivors spoke, and the attention of the lead Hyanis quickly locked onto him. His words were of little concern, but the dagger itself was of interest. Walking forwards, one of the ceremonially dressed Hyanis reached out with one hand and took the dagger. She quickly threw it backwards over her shoulder, where a warrior caught it and sheathed it inside his belt. Looking down upon the one who bravely spoke, she smiled. But he received a harsh backhand across his cheek, in reply to his defiant words, and for taking the liberty of speaking.

"Is that then your request for death?" she questioned him, as one of the tentacles that formed her cloak slipped around and circled his neck. Tightening occasionally like the beat of a heart. The strength with which it squeezed threatened to strangle the man where he knelt.

Looking to the woman who cowered yet had spoken, she motioned for her to also get restrained. And a larger Hyanis of male gender stepped forwards. He towered over the female Hyanis that choked the Elven man slowly, yet showed complete respect for her orders. With little effort, a tentacle slipped over each of the large males shoulders and shot out quickly to claim the silent womans wrists. And then, with a strength that wasn't suspected from the look of the tentacles themselves, he lifted her off the ground so her feet dangled freely. King Inarius was co-ruler of the Kingdom, but had no official power of his Queen. For she was the only one who produced the eggs that needed to be incubated. Like a Queen Bee.

"You submit..." the King asked the woman, leaning in to look her over. Liking what he saw. She would make a fine vessel for Hyanis eggs, as long as she was prepared correctly and thoroughly. Her body seemed already fit for hard work, it was a good place to begin.

From off to the side of the group of survivors from the world above, someone dashed off. Trying to make his way to the wall of water where the Utaru had entered. But within seconds of his flight, he was detained again. Two warriors cornered him, and they looked over to the female Hyanis, who was yet to introduce herself as Queen Inarius. She nodded simply. And with freakish speed the warriors took his limbs in strong holds and dragged him towards the wall of water he so badly wanted to get to. But instead of throwing him out, they simply pushed one of his hand out through the barrier. Immediately he howled in such pain it must have been immeasurable, his body shaking and spasming. And after a few seconds they pulled his hand back in, to show everyone what happened to the body at such depths. There was little left, just a crushed stump. As if it had been clamped completely flat by some great force.

"Learn quickly not to leave through there, for you will not survive...no matter what your treatment at my orders will be like, death is certain if you leave."

And with that, she released the Elven male and looked down at him with a glare. The tentacle trailed up his neck, to lift his gaze to meet hers.

"I ask just once. Submission or death. This is your only chance to make the choice of your own will. It will not be offered again."

The crying, howling man that was still held by the Hyanis was beyond consoling. And soon his blubbering and screaming was too annoying for the warrior guards to deal with, and they effortlessly tossed him through the barrier. His body contorted and collapsed in on itself, before floating away on the current out of view.

((Sorry that took so long to get posted, I'll RP with you both until others join. Please PM me if you have specific likes and dislikes as to what might happen to your characters. I'll try my best to respect them.))

Erlind had read of the power of the Hyanis warriors, but had assumed the feats described had been bravado or propaganda at best. The elf found out how wrong he was when her tentacle whipped out and wrapped around his neck. His face quickly turned red as he struggled to breath. The alien beauty did not even seem to strain as he fought against her. He couldn’t even dig his fingers underneath the living cord throttling his throat and only succeeded in scratching at his own skin before she dropped him of her own accord.

First the water, now her tentacle, Erlind fought to get air back into his lungs. While he was still raggedly drawing in as much air as he could she almost gently lifted his head to face her with the same tentacle that a moment before had shown incredible force. When she asked her question he did his best to compose himself still trying to hide his weakness compared to them. He’d vaguely caught the man who had tried to escape. There had been no hint of willingness to do anything, but kill him or enslave him. She alone had the power to force him into servitude even if she didn’t possess the guard she did.

“Another day in another place I would have chosen death,” he told her slowly and carefully. “I will not die after seeing this place though. If I must live as a slave then it is an honor to do it here, for you.” His words had been as elegant as he could manage, but the elf still felt like a half drowned animal begging for mercy from the tiger that had plucked it from the water. He would find a way out of this servitude, but this clearly was not the moment to try.

"You have Erlind Kendor as your servant. May I ask the name of the one to be my master, or mistress?" He stumbled on the last words unsure of the best way to address them. As long as he could he wanted them to think of him as more than simple labor.

Linny was awed, gasped with surprise and felt helpless beyond measure when picked up and held high with such ease. Her knowlege about the dangers that had been waiting for her in the great wide world was about zero as she´d been raised and educated far away from such unspeakable things. So she truly had no idea what those strange people were up to and what kind of fate was waiting for her. What embarrased her most - at first - was the fact that her tidy dress she used to keep in perfect condition now was tattered and torn, soaked wet and - being ashamed by the mere thought - these strange people were able to take close looks to her now bare legs and, even worse, they were doing so! So she struggled a bit, not to break free but more to get somehow out of view. Then, being witness to the fate of the poor man who´d tried to escape she simply couldn´t believe her eyes. She had no idea about pressure and wasn´t even aware of the fact that shes standing deep down beneath the surface of the sea (not that she´d believe in anyone telling her so), but that this poor fellow just died a horrible and useless death without doubt made her shiver to the bones. How could these strange people do so? Why being so cruel? Like a deep dark shadow lurking in a distant corner, the thought that things have turned from bad to worse came up to her mind. Fear grabbed her even stronger than this strange tentacle - thing that was holding her up high. It took some time for Linny to realize that she´d been asked a question. "Yes, as you wish." she said, more the phrase she had so often answered to her old lady than the answer to the actual question.

((Sorry to both of you, my lack of posting has been rather annoying lately. I did however put a good amount of time into writing a post for this thread but lost internet connection. That was a few days ago. So I unfortunately lost it all. But I hope this makes up for the wait.))

Looking from the male elf before her that spoke to the rest of the 'offerings', Queen Inarius was both content and disappointed that such a small number had been brought forward. Hopefully a sizable population could be maintained from the half dozen survivors, they would have to work hard before the next chance to take slaves came along.

"You will refer to us," she indicated to her husband and herself, "as King and Queen Inarius. We are the current rulers of the Hyanis people. You find yourselves in Utaru's Sanctuary. Our home, and still undiscovered Kingdom to your own world. There will be no other titles for you to use, unless you happen to become the slave of a Minister or Warrior. In which case, that is their title. You will not use first names, this honor is far above your standing. And we do not use your terms, such as Master, or Mistress."

Turning to her husband, she indicated to him with the flutter of her hand. "To you, he is 'My King' and so forth."

Walking among the other half drowned captives, she picked out two that appeared strong enough for her. A male and a female, both healthy and lacking attributes that might make them bad as a vessel. The man was big, standing just shorter than King Inarius. But he had lots of muscle, and would be a good subject to work with. The woman, who was as black as the depths of the ocean, appeared to be the perfect shape for child bearing. So the process should cause her less discomfort compared to giving birth to a human child, although she would go through this process many times each month.

A silent command caused warriors to move forward and claim her three picks. The elven man, and the human male and female. The warriors took them away, moving up stairs, leading either the submissive or the aggressive persons to their rooms. Cells. Whatever they wished to call them.

The King waited patiently, but his eyes moved over every curve of the females body that he held so effortlessly in his grip. He grinned as she accepted his dominion over her, and knew that she would prove pleasurable and practical. Without much thought, he looked among the remaining subjects that knelt on the ground.

He picked two both a male and a female, as the Queen did. And left only men to be spread among the rest of the leadership. Before rolling his tentacles around Linny and pulling her in against his chest. His skin was moist, but not slimy, more like that of a lizard than a frog, yet was smooth and not formed from scales. He could smell her fear, but also the scent she gave off. And as he ran his tongue up the side of her neck, he enjoyed the taste. Salty from the near drowning, but also sweet. Yes, she would do well with birthing eggs. And he could not wait to prepare her for the first impregnation.

"Spread the others among the Ministers and my leading Warriors. And leave us in peace for the rest of the day."

Several of the remaining victims of the Kraken attack were plucked away by three Hyanis Ministers, before two Warriors collected the rest.

King Inarius's two other picks were taken away along a similar path as the Queen's had not more than a minute ago. Before everyone dispersed.

Up a staircase that was carved out of rock they were led. King Inarius still carried his main prize wrapped tightly against him. And he left his other slaves as they were pushed into individual cells, and instead continued on to his bed chamber. Finally releasing Linny as he dropped her into the stone spa that seemed to sit off to the side of the room. It was big enough for a human to float in on their back, and was filled with warm water and had many different coral flowers floating in the water. Foam and bubbles parted as the woman disappeared under the water for a moment.

Down the hallway, the Queen had been less civil in her approach and instead had watched as the Elven male, Erlind, had been dumped on the floor in the centre of her room.

"Wash yourself, the water will help soften your body."

She motioned to the bath that was carved from rock that sat off to the side of the room. A cascade of water fell into it from a hole in the wall several meters up. And it was bigger than that of the King's bath. Suitable for several Hyanis to bathe in it at once. Flowers floated around in it, and many salts and scented oils were placed in vials on a shelf. Sea sponge sat ready to be used as well.

Made soft? He would have understood her wanting her servant clean, but soft seemed a strange requirement of him. Erlind fought the urge to question. She was not only a member of a mythical race he’d dreamed of, but she was their queen and likely didn’t want to be bothered by his questions.

Suppressing his thirst for understanding for the moment the elf stepped to the edge of the bath. He hesitated, but only for a moment before stripping off his clothes. The beautiful creature had told him to wash himself, but he’d still felt strange disrobing in front of her, knowing that while he was a good specimen of his kind he could not compare with hers. Once fully naked, Erlind descended into the warm bath water. His body was strong if lithe with a few scars marring his flesh in places. He’d never been afraid of hunting the past and there were times it had cost him in blood.

He didn’t look back at Queen Inarius, but instead focused on washing himself. He took the sponge and one of the soaps and began to scrub eager to cleanse himself of the gunk he’d been delivered to the Hyanis covered in. To properly clean his hair he had to remove the braid. Erlind focused on the task at hand until he got to the point where he was clean if not truly presentable, then his mind shifted to other thoughts and he could not help, but speak. He turned towards the queen, but did not look up at her. Addressing her while naked made him feel vulnerable and his voice came across much weaker than before.

“My queen, if I am out of place then stop me, but I need to speak. I dreamed of your people for a long time before finding you. I knew when I saw it the Krakken would take me to the Hyanis. I wish to learn of your race, my queen. I know I am only a slave to you, but I would be very grateful to be taught by you.”

Erlind had managed to keep the words themselves elegant, but stumbled over them like a school boy talking to his first crush. He had always been such a proud man, but when faced when the beauty of a myth he’d thought impossible the elf felt ashamed for asking anything much less for her to instruct him.

So the good times working for her old lady have changed, and now she has to service a King! Well, not a kind of king she used to know fom the pictures in the books her old lady kept so well and tidy, but a king nonetheless. A strong king indeed, not even uncle Willy was strong enough to hold her up in the air like this for long and this king hasn´t even given a grunt. Somehow she felt pride to be choosen by someone of such high standing, but his manners were strange in such a degree that it made her not even blush when he held her against his body. She has always been taught to keep her distance, to touch someone else was thinkable only if ordered to do so, may be to brush off a stain from a coat or fix a flower that fell from her old ladys hat. Those strange tentacles - Linny still wasn´t sure if they were some kind of additional "limbs" or part of a very special clothing - made "distance" a sheer impossibility. So it wasn´t her fault to touch the kings body. May be, those strange people have other rules to learn.
But way before she had time to get used to be "in touch" she made a splash landing in pleasant water. Much better than the kind of wooden bath-tub she was used to, and the nice little flowers were a big plus - mostly because they were a good floating screen to hide underneath. So many things to ask, but whom should she ask to get the answers? Linny couldn´t see any servants, the king had even carried her all alone. May be she´ll learn about that later. But then, there was another, very, very important question. So Linny dared to speak, adressing the king in just the way she had been told to.

"My King... My dresses are in rags, may I ask what kind of clothes I´m supposed to wear?"

((OOC: I messaged DormantEvil and asked if she had any interest in either continuing this thread or making a new similar one. And if either one was so, if I could join. She said she would try get this one going again, and that I could join with a character I had proposed to her))

Name: Gavin Carter
Occupation: Formerly captain of the 'floating noble'
Age: 29
Build: Tall, Muscular
Other: Short brown hair, a stubby beard, gray eyes and a weathered face

Gavin Carter had made an effort to be as unnoticeable as he could manage, he'd noticed soon after their abduction that getting yourself noticed would likely result in getting singled out and feeling first hand that these creatures had considerable strength.

Of course, Gavin should already know that. He was aware of the rumors, after all he had been the captain for the 'floating noble'. That had been the name of the ship, it had been a good description of this ship, now however the ship had been ripped apart, it was no longer noble and no longer floating.

Despite managing to stay relatively quiet however, he did get singled out. "Queen Inarius" had picked him as one of her slaves. At least, he was pretty sure that would be what he would be doing. Despite being the captain he had been mildly surprised she had chosen him. Yeah, he was muscular, but- most sailors were, in that sense he did not really stand out. What made him the captain however, what had allowed him to stay captain despite those who challenged him- was his uncanny agility and flexibility. Not feats she could've really seen, could she? He wondered as the guards took him and dragged him up the stairs. He didn't struggle, not for now- maybe there would be a chance to struggle later... Maybe.

Gavin clung to that hope as the guards threw him into his cell.
