Our other thread on the disaster have mostly dissolved into backbiting and fighting, the meaningless defense of ideological allies regardless of their blame or strengths, floating popups of racism and racial consciousness, and of course a thrilling non-debate with the Happy Fun Ball.

However, amidst the snipes and growls and pains and impotence and hatred, I believe that there are certain points that we all agree on in this tragedy, that we all support and have forgotten in the rabid snaps of the jaws:

1) This is a horrific tragedy that shouldn't be played for anyone's advantage (monetarily, politically, or otherwise).
2) Some people should be held accountable for the fuckups they committed and in ideal, political affiliation should not be a factor in their guilt or innocence.
3) We are still obviously a quite racist nation and should stop bullshiting ourselves that we aren't.
4) Everyone should be working together to get everyone out of there and into a safe location with as much speed as possible.
4a) The people stuck there are living in an anarchitic hellhole dystopia and instead of blaming them for actions we can't understand living in the stable well-stocked socities we do, we should be concentrating on 4 as much as possible (it does not matter if they take a TV, the store is irrecoverable and their homes and possessions are wiped out anyways. Besides, they're not going to be allowed to carry it through evac, especially when family pets are prevented from being carried out).
5) Every little bit helps, regardless of the source and we should remember that and give that little bit.
6) We should learn from the mistakes of the past and strive not to repeat them in the future.

Of course, I might be bullshitting myself and none of us hold these opinions and values, but I'd like to believe that some of us are better people than that. That we are not just crocadille tear, callous pirates with a soulectomy.

Well geez, Luc.

Considering how many millenia you've been working to bring us over to your side of The Eternal Struggle, why are you surprised?

;)

(I'll say this out loud. I'm joking.)

It's mostly because if I'm winning that much, I really need to do an audit of the paperwork.

You are.

Have you checked the beauracracy in Hell recently? It might be time for a re-org.

Why should we humans be the only ones to suffer?

Luc,

I think part of the problem is everyone is just blown away by the whole thing. Soul Fucked if you will. The whole thing is a tragedy. Yes there is blame, there is enough blame to go wround. Maybe we should stop pointing fingers right now and take care of the people who need help, then we can do all the finger pointing we want to. (Some people just seem to enjoy the hell out of pointing fingers.)

Yes there are people who are going to make ground with their politics, religeon, and hell even money. People are people. (There's a Baptist Preacher in Texas with a sign out front of his church. "New Orleans is Americas Sodom and Gomhora(sp)." Some people just have to try and get ahead on other peoples misery. I don't have to like it but I d have to know it's there.

Yes we are a rascist nation. We will be one until everyone figures out two little truths. We are all human, and you don't have to be white to be a rascist.

As ofr people helping. They are doing it. Down the street from us we had a family holding a drive to get supplies to send to Mississippi. In two days they had received not only enough food, water, blankets and clothes to fill a Semi, they had also received enough portable generators to fill another truck as well as several thousand dollars. (The use of the trucks was donated as well.) Remember this is south Florida where we deal with the threat of hurricanes every year and yet people were giving up their generators to the people in Mississippi. So people are indeed trying to help out.

Learning from mistakes is something people are loath to do. It takes effort. (And in many cases more money than people have, case in point being shutters.) Will we have another disaster such as this one? I hope not but if I was a gambler I wouldn't bet on it not happening again.
