The Hamar and Karo Tribes

I just caught the end of a Travel Channel program called The Search for Mingi: The Hamar and Karo Tribes. Man, we kinksters got nothing on the women of these tribes.

Although Sago and Duka seem to have an affectionate marriage, he beats her when provoked. Like every Hamar woman, she accepts this behavior for she believes it is a man's way of loving.

The film witnesses Sago's cousin's ceremonial initation into manhood. At the ceremony Duka and the other women sing and dance themselves into a frenzy before being ritually whipped until their backs bleed.

That wasn't the film that was on the travel channel, but they did show the ritual whipping part. The women fight to have the men beat them with what seem to be reeds or whatever our canes are made of. They are whipped and they do not flinch or they will lose face. They showed this - they really don't even look like they were hit at all! But they have huge bleeding wounds. They are beaten again and again and again - except the blind member of the tribe they showed only got beat once, because the guy doing the beatings was reluctant to hit a blind woman!

I was rather impressed.

I saw the special too, and others like it... it is amazing, truely.

Amazing what Americans find amazing and just stand back and "let happen" and what they deem against human rights and rush in to save people.

I saw something on this.. not sure if it was the same program or not, a while ago. This is the tribe that believes a child's teeth coming in first on the bottom is Mingi, right, and the child has to be sacrificed?

Very bizarre show, but man, those women were serious troopers.

I'm not sure if it was the same program or not. I only caught the end, which involved an older teen in the tribe jumping across cows six times to prove that he is a man. The beating of the women was somehow part of the celebration of manhood, but I didn't catch it in time to see how. The show originally aired in 2001, though, so I'm sure it will be on again - even if it's not till 2006!

Anthropology is a fascinating subject. There is a tribe in PNG which uses homosexuality and oral sex as initiation into manhood. From memory, it is considered a way for passing on the masculinity and proving the readiness to accept it to perform oral sex on other senior males in the tribe throughout the months of transition.

Yes.. that's the one I remember. It's been a while though.. I'd have to watch it again because I can't remember what the beating was about either. I know that one couple's, I think the main one, lost a child to Mingi when his teeth grew in on the bottom first.

It was a very interesting program. I'll have to look out for it again.

Wow, that's one tribe we won't be seeing on TV! Interesting information, though. Through a Google search I was able to find that there is a tribe in PNG (may or may not be the same one) that believes to ejaculate causes one to lose power, so young boys suck off older boys to get that power. I also found this page which contains a lot of information about the sexual proclivities of various New Guinea tribes.

Hey, I remember reading about that. I think more specifically it was a semen-cult type social riff; you had to ingest the essence of masculinity to become a man.

Probably the true initiation into adulthood is the moment you realize that your venerable ancestral tradition is basically a scam...
