was sitting outside enjoying easter with the family and this guy drives up the lane and back into the corn field in a black toyota with dark, tinted windows. about an 1/8 a mile away., a couple people get out and fuss around the car awhile.

i go in and get the telescope and see a dude in a yellow polo shirt and a chick in a gray sweater, he's obviously showing her how to handle a fire arm. pretty soon the shooting starts and i send the kids in the house.

i hop in the truck with my no.2 son and i drive up to them. he comes walking up and shakes my son's hand and explains who he is (the son of the guy that owns the ground) and that he's an ex army sgt, etc. i tell him it's easter and i have people and kids outside and i'm not ok with them shooting. He said they were shooting 45's into a berm. I said were there any rocks in the berm, blah, blah. Anyway, I made him leave.

was it the right thing to do?

"was it the right thing to do?"

WTF, bert...

...oprah.com down again?

what's the law?

I would think most places have similar laws about that. Around here other than an actual range it is 1/4 mile from any paved road or any occupied structure. Ranges tend to be that anyway but one has a paved road in front of it.

Let me get this right...

You were worried about rock chips traveling an eighth of a mile?

To be fair, he did hop in the truck with his number two son and ride to the sound of the guns bringing both of them closer to potential fragments. Wise that he left the favorite son back, out of ballistic range....

I used to hunt quail with some friends in a particular area. Maybe 4 sections of land somewhere like 2500 acres I would guess. In the center of that grid were some houses. I never did learn how the heck the people that lived there got there. Some sort of odd cul-de-sac coming from the west I think, but there is nothing for 15 miles or more west except those homes. We were always East, North, or South of those homes.

I swear the quail had read up on game and fish regulations. Every time we stalked a covey they would light out low and fast and position themselves so that they were between us and the houses, then they would go back to scratching like domesticated chickens, confident that we would not shoot.

I like my seclusion...

;)

I'm hoping drone delivery improves to the point of eliminating roads. I'll put down in the middle of some gawd-awful swamp or something.

:D

Tom

You didn't shoot him, or you haven't shot him.

;)

Not to 'bang' on you, just giving you a 'shot' at learning English.

I give Tom a hard time often but he takes it in stride. I like that I can "hear" his accent in his posts. It seems odd to me though, that example. English is a Germanic language with lots of words that I assume would be cognitives. You would think tense would be recognizable, but perhaps not.

Too many irregular verbs.

Lots of cultural garbage from several languages.

Where I have lived, you can't discharge a firearm within a mile of a residence unless it's a licensed range.

I was discussing this with Des the other day. I have already forgotten the term he used for using language that is "proper" because it is in common usage rather than pedantically correct. That is the type of writer I am. I know what "sounds" right and have always been so good at it that the actual rules for WHY something sounds correct or 'off' went in one ear and out the other. I manage to use fairly correct grammar but I cannot explain it.

To me, that ability came from a voracious appetite for reading in my youth. I never struggled with any English or writing class because I had that great foundation of absorbed basics. I think it was lack of television. I see the expanded content now and the great variety of choices and it seems understandable why my child seems to have little love of reading. Her writing suffers for it.

How on earth do us yay-hoos in AZ not shoot each other? I had always heard 1/4 mile and I know that is what the Game and Fish guys preach. I just looked up AZ BLM regs. It is a mere 200 FEET from a road and 150 yards from a dwelling?!??

Were they assuming slingshots?

No, responsible marksmen.
