The wife has a new exhibition - part of a massive three month show in the Portuguese Algarve. She has produced a visually stunning piece of work set in an old defensive fort at the mouth of a river in walking distance of the town centre, this part of the show includes her work and a dozen other Portuguese artists. Her work has turned out to be the focal point of the exhibition largely because she uses common objects and uses them in her sculpture installations in a way that mildly shocks to force visitors to the gallery to re-evaluate their relationship with said item.
Virtually every article written about the exhibition has focussed on her work... before mentioning (in a list) the other artists exhibiting. The Minister of Culture described her work as 'the cherry on the cake'. (You could hardly expect a Minister of Culture to be linguistically eloquent). As a result the Green-Eyed Monster has reared it's ugly head, one of the more famous artists exhibiting has asked for his work to be withdrawn, citing a bias by the exhibition organisers in favour of... and a pompous Portuguese art critic has circulated a critical evaluation of the work questioning its validity in the context of the exhibition.
Given that the theme of the exhibition is Local Worlds and Displacement, it is hard to see what he is getting at. The installation involves 800kg of oranges - that's about 4500 oranges - a product originally brought to Portugal from China and exported by Portugal to establish orange groves across the world... it strikes me it fits the 'job description'.
Anyway... I'm pissed off by petty artistic jealousies... but since my next novel project involves an artist the affair has given me some good additional insight to the world and some of the petty scenes will be given the appropriate treatment.
If anyone wants the link to the web site PM me.
