Cymothoa exigua is a terrifying creature. The parasite enters a fish through its gills, attaches to its tongue, consumes the tongue, and then becomes a sort of new tongue. For the rest of the fish’s life, it swims around with the “tongue-eating louse,” as the isopod is known, operating its mouth.

At first, seeing a photo of it made me recoil. Then, I realized it seemed oddly familiar: It reminds me of the relationship between what’s loosely defined as “conservative media” and the GOP.

For a long time, most influential right-leaning media figures were content to swim alongside the GOP, flowing along in the same general direction. Until Donald Trump came along. Then they saw an opportunity to burrow deep inside the GOP and wield real power.

It worked. So well that the GOP, as an institution, no longer controls its tongue and its craven media parasites are the only thing keeping it alive.

Truly. But it's also the reality that they have been so programmed to believe it is their patriotic duty to hate the democrats, the left, the liberals. See DerpBoy above. He can't help himself. Granted he's an extreme example, but the reality is that there are people who can't wait to tune into Hannity et all to get their daily dose of hate the libs.

I think that is one reason Trump was and is so popular. He actively hates on the liberals and democrats and has done so from day one of his candidacy. Same with anything "other". He reinforces their us v them philosophy.

I used to work for a couple of them. Trumpers, not Muslim extremists. After Obama got elected they went batshit crazy. Not like they were shining beacons of tolerance to begin with, but I could see the propaganda take its toll on them. It took less than a year before "not my president" became a daily refrain. They had already been listening to the crap for years, so it wasn't difficult. When Trump got elected they became even more aggressive in their hostility to all things democrat and liberal.

You are correct that there is no reasoning with someone like that. Like I said before, they believe it is their patriotic duty to hate democrats/liberals/progressives. The self righteous nature of it makes it a nonstarter. They are automatically and reflexively hostile towards anything democrat and liberal - regardless if it really is.
