THE BAD NEWS: Donald Trump is a disruptive, greedy, malicious, reckless, undisciplined child who hates the United States Constitution, loves Vladimir Putin and would gladly destroy America’s economic stability and national security, while simultaneously claiming that he’s somehow doing the American people some sort of favor.
THE GOOD NEWS: There are now responsible adults in Washington DC who are ready, willing and able to investigate Trump, find out exactly how much damage he’s done to this great nation of ours, try to reverse it, and hold Trump accountable for his actions.
The Republicans in Congress have always had the legal authority to hold Trump accountable, however, they decided early on that they had no interest in performing the duties that were required to protect and preserve the Constitutional form of government that our Founding Fathers created. They would much rather act as Trump’s accomplices.
Here’s an example of what I’m talking about, Kevin Brady (as the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee) could have contacted the Treasury Department and requested Trump’s tax returns at any time. If the Treasured Department refused to turn them over, Brady could have subpoenaed the Treasury Department for the release of Trump’s tax returns.
Trump, unlike other presidents in recent decades, has refused to make his returns public. He also has refused to divest himself of businesses and investments that could pose domestic or international conflicts of interest. For example, the Trump International Hotel, located just blocks from the White House, regularly hosts events with foreign diplomats, interest groups and industry associations.
In a functioning Democracy, the people need to know if their leader is leader can be trusted. They need to know if he’s engaged in money laundering. We need to know if he’s profiting off of bribes, kickbacks and slush funds. This is the BARE MINIMUM that is required for the American People to know that their president is not a crook.
However, Trump refuses to provide this minimum assurance that he’s not engaging in shady, criminal dealings. And Republican Congressman Kevin Brady refused to hold Trump accountable. He assisted Trump in keeping Trump’s ostensible criminal dealings a secret.
With the Democrats in control of the House of Representatives, all that is changing. Nancy Pelosi has vowed that the Democrats will demand to see Trump’s tax returns.
And Congressman Richard Neal (who will be taking over as the Chairman of House Ways and Means Committee) has already said that he will do what his Republican predecessor SHOULD HAVE DONE. It will be done the easy way, or the hard way, but one way or another, we WILL get Trump’s tax returns.
New House Ways and Means Committee Chairman, Richard Neal isn’t going to abdicate his responsibilities. He will subpoena Trump’s tax returns if he has to.
Republican Congressman Devin Nunes (as the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee) had the authority to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, as well as Trump’s dealings with the Russians as they helped Trump win.
However, Nunes decided to abdicate his responsibilities, and instead used his power as House Intelligence Committee Chairman to assist Trump as Trump attempted to obstruct justice and to keep the truth covered up.
But America SHOULD have been able to rely on a united Congress to ensure that foreign powers don’t meddle in our elections and install leaders that they handpick, however, Nunes engaged in persistent and pernicious obstruction, and has kept us from getting at the truth.
Luckily for us, Nunes is now gone and newly minted House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that she has selected Congressman Adam Schiff to chair the House Intelligence Committee for the next two years.
Schiff was one of President Trump's toughest critics during the Republican leader's first two years in office and will now has the ability to subpoena documents in investigations of President Trump, his campaign, and inner circle. Pelosi said that's part of the reason she tapped him for the job.
Schiff isn’t going to obstruct justice and cover for Trump like Nunes did. Schiff is going to conduct a thorough investigation and keep digging until he gets to the truth.
The Democrats are now in a position to compel Trump and members of his administration to comply with House requests and investigations, from allegations of conspiring with Russia to financial conflicts of interest to government ethics violations.
The Republicans have abdicated their oversight responsibilities and do NOTHING as Trump plots to steal Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, drives scientists out of the Federal government, drives diplomats out of the State Department, attacks our NATO allies, leaks secrets to the Russians, destroys America’s farms with childish, self-destructive trade wars, defends Russia's cyberattacks against the United States and defends the Saudis when they torture and kill an American journalist.
But things are changing now! We now have responsible leadership in Washington DC that will do the important work that the Republicans refuse to do!
