Once upon a time there lived a handsome Prince. The Prince lived in a castle with a beautiful Princess. The Prince was generally well liked by most of the inhabitants of the Castle, including the townsfolk and farmers that lived in the outskirts of the city. The Prince was considered a good man, as he was always fair in matters of kingdom.
Life in the kingdom was generally always the same for the Prince. He would attend court, caring for matters of the State, he would sit with visiting nobles, he would inspect the castle grounds and celebrate festival. The time had long since passed when a dragon needed to be slain or a damsel in distress needed saving.
The Prince would often climb to the highest tower to gaze out at the surrounding lands. He would ride alone in the forest, gathering himself in thought. For even though he possessed great wealth, the affection and respect of people and a loving family, he still felt a deep emptiness in his heart that he could not fulfill.
One day the Prince received a note from a courier informing him that a beautiful and mysterious stranger wished to have audience with him. The Prince read the contents of the letter: “Dear Prince, I have heard talk throughout the country that thou are quite a handsome, valiant man. I would like an audience with thee to meet in the flesh”. It was signed “The Lady of Enchantment”. The Prince asked the courier to describe the woman to him. The courier told him that he had never seen such beauty in all his life. He told the Prince, The Lady seemed to have an aura about her that captured the gaze of all men. The Prince just laughed, yet he was intrigued. He arranged for a meeting the next afternoon.
The Prince was in one of the castle chambers, when a page announced the entrance of The Lady of Enchantment. The Lady entered the chamber coming just before the Prince. She curtsied, standing in front of the Prince with a veil hiding her face. The Prince spoke, “Please take off thy veil and reveal thyself to me”. The Lady removed her veil allowing the Prince to gaze upon her face. The Prince was taken aback. Never before had he seen such beauty!
After a silent moment, the Prince composed himself enough to ask the Lady what she sought. The Lady told him she merely wanted to meet in him person, to take rest in his lands and to see if he was as handsome and honorable as his reputation. The Prince granted her permission to stay in the land as long as she desired, but also asked if he had lived up to her expectations. The Lady of Enchantment said, “Dear Prince thou are a handsome man in deed, I would love to get to know thee further”. The Prince, hiding his anticipation, said they could meet again tomorrow. He would send word of the place.
That night, the Lady was all that he could think of. The visions of her were like a thief in the night, robbing him of any desire to sleep. The next day he anxiously awaited for her arrival near a secluded pond. When the Lady arrived, he dashed down from his horse, knelt by the Lady’s mount and professed his love to her. The Prince looked into her stunning eyes to suddenly see them transform into angry coals of scorn.
“How dare thee speak to me, in such a manner!”, she half question half screamed. Suddenly the sky began to blacken and the wind to howl. “Its is true I thought thee a handsome noble man, but thou hast no more honor than the lowly creatures that inhabit this pond”. “Thee who have so much but are willing to throw it away on a whim!” “Thou do not deserve any of it!” Saying this The Lady raised both hands above her head as a bolt of lightning came crashing out of her hands, hitting the Prince directly in the chest knocking him senseless.
When the Prince recovered, he didn’t feel quite right. Through the fog in his mind, he could hear the Lady’s voice. “I have put you where you belong, where you can sit back to contemplate life. Maybe now that you have lost all, you will appreciate how good life once was. You have lost all but your ability to speak as a man. One last thing you should know is that all spells can be broken, either by you or by another. It is up to you to figure out how.” With that the Lady turned and rode off. The Prince looked down into the water to gaze at his reflection. He saw that he had been turned into a frog.
How would you write the end to this story?
