Well, let's be accurate....
The Bourbon Monarchy of France were the guns, powder, navy, and training behind the American revolution. They didn't save our buns--they WERE our buns.
But let's see.
The Bourbon monarchy fell to revolution, calling itself the First French Republic.
The revolutionary government fell to itself several times.
The last of the revolutionary governments fell to Napoleon's little coup, founding the First French Empire.
Napoleon was defeated in Russia, then toppled and overthrown at the Battle of Nations. After exile, return, re-revolution, and re-defeat at Waterloo, he was exiled [permanently this time!], and replaced by the Bourbon Resoration.
The Bourbon Restoration was overthrown in 1832, in favor of Louis Phillippe, the Orlean Monarchy.
The Orlean Monarchy was overthrown in 1848, and replaced by the Second French Republic.
The Second French Republic elected Napoleon III, who promptly overthrew himself, and founded the Second French Empire.
The Second French Empire was beaten like a redheaded stepchild by Otto von Bismarck's Prussia-cum-German-Empire [one cum joke and I scream!], and replaced by the Third French Republic.
The Third French Republic was beaten like a redheaded stepchild by Adolf Hitler's Germany. [When you lost to an Austrian, you KNOW you suck] The French Vichy Regime took over, there, as a Nazi ally.
The Vichy Regime fell to the Allies, who set up the Fourth French Republic.
The Fourth French Republic fell for no good reason, and was replaced by the Fifth French Republic.
With the exception of 4th to 5th, every new government in the paragraphs above disavowed the actions of the immediately previous one [and sometimes even further than that; this disavowal does NOT include a disavowal of the disavowals. That's just silly].
In other words, we owe the Bourbon Monarchy alot. Too bad they're LONG gone.
