Hooray and hallelujah. Symbolism over substance. Meaningless. The turning of a rag into a national obsession. A flag that flew over a building very few visited and even fewer ever looked up to see. A flag put there by the late, great, Fritz Hollings, democrat governor and senator from the great state of South Carolina. Not all that long ago either.

Tonight, nation wide, there are groups large and small, political and activist, patting them selves on the back for their great victory. Symbolism over substance. It's not like they recruited two regiments of black soldiers to fight for the union, or consistently came forth with piercing rhetoric to help change the goal of the Civil War from States Rights and Succession, to the elimination of slavery.

Or like MLK, who via rhetoric and action ended the era of Jim Crow.

No, they just got a rag removed from a building and in doing so have managed to turn the remaining rags into collectors items. Bravo you intrepid soldiers of nothing.

Lest you think I'm angry, I'm not. I'm disgusted that with all of the challenges facing this nations a rag has consumed so much time and thought. These warriors over nothing remind me of Nero, who fiddled while Rome burned.

Vat said it best in Mischa's thread, the power that that symbolic rag holds is all in your mind. It's living there rent free. And quite frankly you've insured that not only is it not going away, it has increased in value.

Congratulations on your meaningless victory.

Thank you for your response, You addresses every point with clarity an pointed observations.

And you wonder why an acute mind such as your own is on ignore. Go figure.

You spelled her name wrong and missed a letter. You made no points, no observations, just your drunk fingers making a blurry mess vomiting on your keyboard.

You don't understand the issue, which is why you don't understand why this is meaningful. And no, I'm not going to do your homework for you.

The Confederate Flag debate - just another distraction from really having an honest talk about race. America is trying to put off this talk as much as possible but it has to happen. And it's going to be unpleasant.

Taking down the Confederate flag to solve race relations is the equivalent of a football team down by 45 points gaining three yards. It's a step in the right direction but it doesn't solve the real issue.

It should have been in a museum right next to the white flag of surrender that took its place as the Confederate Battle Standard over a century ago. There was never any reason for official recognition by SC or any other state government after their surrender. Let private individuals fly it if they wish to self identify as backward failed white supremacists. It just makes it easier to know what bone-jarringly moronic racists to avoid.

I don't understand why the symbol of a movement that got its ass kicked nine ways to Sunday is even a thing. "Hey this was the flag of our forefathers when they got their asses stomped for being moronic racist dickheads! Whoo Hooo!"

I understand reality, far more than you. It's all tokenism. Symbolism over substance. The meaningful work has been done so all we're left with is parasites and disciples of Warhol looking for their 15 minutes of fame. Not unlike unlike you, someone that questions every thing and contributes nothing.

I fully understand your reticence in doing research, you're incapable. A decade of history here has shown that to be true.

Neither you, nor any of the other mental defectives, that have responded have done so with anything that remotely approaches some rebuttal, just 4th grade name calling. And for some reason you think I should take you seriously, why?

From my standpoint you're just another idiot that thinks this whole affair is important and will be anything more than a historical footnote,if remembered at all

It's a joke, a time wasting joke.

You are not wrong, Ish, so much as out of date. In the information age, the political manipulation of symbols and symbolic gestures is action.

The flag represents treason and is offensive to millions of people. Yeah, I know they choose to be offended, but no other symbol of hate would ever be allowed on any state government property. I don't give a shit if people think it's part of their "heritage." Let them fly it on their own property.
