I raised an eyebrow as my dad and step-mom outlined what they had planned for me for college. For months now, of course, I had been planning on heading up to Golden State University, and studying engineering. My step-sister was already a student there and seemed to like it quite a bit.
What I hadn’t expected, and I don’t think she was expecting it either, was that our parents would purchase a small house for us near the University. They were both accountants, and after running the numbers and searching the market, had figured out that it would be cheaper to literally buy a house for the both of us than to pay for room and board at the University.
There was just one catch, of course. The house was apparently kind of a “fixer-upper.” I had attended the local Tech School and had plenty of classes in carpentry, basic electrical work, even some HVAC stuff, and had been helping my dad on projects around the house since I was little, so it wasn’t something I couldn’t handle. But, it pretty much had to be all fixed-up by the time classes started in August, which meant my entire summer vacation would be spent working on it.
My parents assured me that my older step-sister, Naomi, would be more than happy to help out (I almost laughed at that part, because my sister is on the more petite side). Part of the deal was that when we were both done with college and no longer needed the house, we could split the money from selling it off; if we took care of it and fixed it up nice, it would sell for a lot more than our folks bought it for!
And that’s how I found myself driving north on Interstate 5, my pick-up truck packed to the brim with my belongings and tools, just a week after my high school graduation. My step-sister was supposed to meet me at the house. Our parents hadn’t even visited the house or anything, just seen pictures. I just hoped it was halfway livable!
