David Dushman has died aged 98. The Red Army soldier then 21 drove his tank through the fence at Auschwitz in January 1945.
Dushman, himself a Jew, was one of only 69 soldiers of the 12,000 in his Division that did not die. Critically injured, he survived and returned to Germany in 1972 to be a close witness of the slaughter of the Israeli team by Arab militants.
He was coach of one of the USSR' teams. And a true 20th century hero.
