The First Deaths of the Upcoming War With Iraq

I really have doubts that the Administration is being realistic when looking at the projected death toll of Iraq.

I think they have an excellent idea of what the death tolls will be. What do you think they do all day in the situation room, bitch about movies on the Internet?

Dixon,

You act so confident about this.

Think of the American reaction to the death of around a dozen in Somalia. We immediately pulled out.

The wars we have entered - the Gulf War, the Balkan Crisis (Bosnia and Kosovo), and Afghanistan have produced few human casualties.

I really have doubts that the Administration is being realistic when looking at the projected death toll of Iraq.

I also wonder how long Americans will stay behind this war if the death toll moves into 3 figures, much less anything higher.

The military didn't pull out of Somalia they were ordered out. Clinton's DefSec Les Aspin denied the use of armor in Mogadishu. A single M1 tank would have saved a lot of lives in that situation. He resigned in disgrace over the incident soon after. I'm not trying to make this into a bash Clinton speil, but those are the facts.

Clinton went into Kosovo, and I'm glad he did, but I wonder if he would have stayed there if we had started to have casualties.

Our military has been very good at avoiding casualties in since Viet Nam. I think they learned their lesson since. I don't really see tham getting involved in house to house fighting in Baghdad, and that's the only scenario that could cost many lives. They can't scratch us if we stay in the air or in armor formations.

We're only vulnerable if we go into the cities on foot. I think the military planners know that.

Military intelligence is pretty freaking advanced these days, especially U.S. Military intel. Didnt seem to do too bad the last time.

Very true. Armor would have been a better choice for Somalia. Light strike forces are nice when you have backup....the keyword being backup.

They read all the political threads on Lit to shape public policy.

Yeah, but that was before Gameboy Advanced, which is probably all they're working on. Maybe everyone's right. Maybe we should e-mail some Internet articles to the White House, and keep them as well informed as us.

It has tiny access to the Gulf, in a part of the country we control with our "No Fly Zone". Hardly a "Coast". For all intents and purposes of humor, landlocked.

Lavender,

Your thread title is rather inflammatory. I dont see these deaths or the incident as an extension of a potential ground invasion of Iraq. Training exercises have been conducted with the Kuwaitis before, in the same region. If you want to make a point about the war with Iraq, this isnt the news story to use.

I thought it was funny that DCL would mention that Bush would be ordering more jeeps...while he's at it, maybe he could get some Sherman tanks?

I was wondering if they weren't Al'Quida members or wannabees,
afterall, it was a suicide mission.

Of course they could easily be somebody wanting vengence against the US Marines.

If Americans believe in the Iraq/Al Q'uida connection, I think there will be a willingness to take more military casualties than we have civillian ones.
