Avram Cohen couldn't believe that he was in this mess, but when his cousin Levi over in Tel Aviv asked this favor from him, he couldn't refuse. He still shook his head, as he had always been a bachelor, and now he was asked to not only marry, but marry an Arab, no less! He would never have expected to be asked such a favor, but evidently, the particular bride badly needed a green card and a baby, after which she would be sure of staying in the United States.
What was the deal with this particular woman, anyway, that Levi would stick out his neck for her....what had she done? Something to do with the Lebanese campaign in 1982, that's all he knew. The girl was from the southern part of the country, but it wasn't clear if she was a Christian or Muslim, either. Then again, how many Lebanese Muslims would get along that well with an Israeli, given the bloody history with the Lebanese Civil War?
In any case, Avram was now set to meet her.....his new bride. Not likely to stay his bride, of course. Not permanently. Could she handle his lifestyle? Could he handle hers? What if they drove each other mad? He gave his word to Levi, but he hoped that it wouldn't kill him to do so.....would it really be worth Levi's "undying gratitude," anyway?
And would the young woman really welcome this union....with an American Jew like him? Despite his rather Hebrew name, Avram was a distinctly secular and unobservant Jew to boot. What if she was extra religious and thought to convert him? What if she refused divorce on religious grounds? What would he do then? What would she do?
Yet, here Avram was, at the airport like some valet, holding a sign for his new bride....he, a highly respected cardiologist, no less? That was another thing....the girl was said to be a nurse....what if they ended up working at the same hospital as well as being married? Would that be weird or what?
