So many issues have been debated here on Lit. over the years. Some I've even provoked, just because I can.

But I wonder at the thought processes of some of you, truly.

In any debate regarding government policy I ask but one question of myself, "Does the fate of the Republic rest on the resolution of this issue?

You'd be amazed at how much of the bullshit falls through the cracks when you actually try to answer that simple question.

Abortion? Meaningless.

Gay Marriage? About the same.

National Health Care? Political junk.

None of the above are a threat to the Republic as long as the following isn't jeapordized.

There are only two things that threaten the fate of the Republic. Foriegn threats and economic threats.

History has taught, time and time again, that the greatest threat to the economy is government. At the same time the antidote to foriegn threats is also the government. The balance is delicate and it appears we've gone over the edge.

A question of government policy can be very important without meeting that test; there are countless historical examples. E.g., the U.S. could have remained as much of a republic as it ever had been without giving the vote to women. That is the obvious result of any normal thought process on the issue. Maybe you need to re-examine yours.

WHAT???

A post without one link?

Hm.

You may be right, but I wonder if the Romans thought much the same way.

Every choice we make as a country has it's consequences.

Will the Republic fall today...maybe not.

but the will and moral fiber of the people.

A Republic is not just words but, flesh and blood people, by the generation backing up those words.

A fall starts long before the action is realized.

What say ye?

A parable:

I just got home from picking my son up and taking him to the impound lot where his car had been towed. He is a cook in a bar as he goes to school. The employees must park in the Ace Hardware lot in the rear. The lot as mostly empty; he parked one spot over from the designated area and was towed.

It was after 9:00 pm so the fine was an additional $20. We went to pick up the car; no one was there so we called the number on the sign. Someone would meet us in 15 minutes. We decide to go to the Pilot truck stop nearby for a drink.

The place is fairly busy. We have to park a half block away due to all the empty handicap spots. Inside is every imaginable toothless, spandex wearing, drunk, stoned night dweller. Tim McGraw on the muzak. My wife nudges me and mutters get me out of here. As we walk out I say this is America.

We meet the attendant. The fine is $105. My son probably made $50 on the day. The city's cut was probably $40. His net loss, $55. Redistribution of the wealth.

The country is decaying from the middle out.

It's like a marriage that ended 5 years before the divorce.

It's what you get when you decide that law trumps justice.

I'm bored of the Republic now. I want an Empire..I want to fly a flag in my backyard with the Death Star on it!!!

True.

We, The People, need to stop the decay.

Teach your women how to operate a firearm.

(rollz eyez)

Dog, Give me strength.

She would rather roll over and die.
She has the constitution of a rabbit.
Nature ties to pair up opposites.

I s'pose that in addition to foreign and economic threats, you could through in "chaos".

Examples may be religeous turmoil (Ireland), Genocide (yugoslavia), moral turbulence (values concerning abortion, gay marriage, disobedience, slavery etc)

As usual, your overly simplistic binary worldview overlooks key issues of our time. Foreign threats and economic threats are certainly two of the most important issues America will be facing during the remaining few pathetic years of your miserable existence, yet as usual you conveniently fail to acknowledge a potentially even bigger threat to our existence:

As philosophers, historians and even musicians have continually reminded us, "History shows again and again, how nature points out the folly of men..."

The only thing that threatens the Republic is the will of the people and the legislature that panders to it when they demand security and welfare specific.

I honestly don't think a true Republic can be done in by external enemies for freedom trumps all...

3000 free men can defeat the will of one million subjects.

A true Republic cannot have a failing economy; with legislative management comes failure.

A true Republican can even withstand idiots like Throb and suffer them gently until they are allowed a vote without franchise.

Same response as my post yesterday.

The only ones who "serve" in public office are those with no shame because the rest of us don't want every piece of irrelevant dirty laundry put out for public examination, even tho' none of it is as dirty as those without shame.

Until that changes--that dirt doesn't consume the media--and it won't as long as we keep purchasing it--we're going to be stuck with the shameless in charge.

The wailing and gnashing of teeth from the "right" on a daily basis is like hearing that first sweet birdsong in the morning.

You just know you're doing something right when the fringe is bawling like a child whose had it's rattle taken away for good.

Ishmael wanna ba-ba?
